Morrow played a really Nasty character in this. It was like "I just don't care at all, so I guess i'll really do it up." Sadly there are kids like that today. That's usually what happens when they come from a lousy broken home, and just plain ignorant parents. Hitting them is useless because that's what they're used to; they become numb to it. Pretty pathetic.
Yes... and today, according to those who want to crash public education.... it's all the teachers fault. Next time you fail a medical test tell your doctor it is all his or her fault.
Daddy-O was an expression that was common.Vic Morrow and my uncle Dan Terranova(Balatci) lived together in Hollywood together with a few other up and coming actors.Of course Sidney Portier was in this great film and a young Jamel Farrar who would later change his name to Jamie Farr. Its a great film and of course the first movie to use a rock and roll song in its title.
I first saw this movie at age 11 in the 1950s with my mom, when it first opened up in a local theater where we lived in the South Bronx, When coming out of the movie house there was a record shop next door and I asked my mom to let's go in and see if they had Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock, it was one of my first recordings I had ever purchased on a 78 speed.
The GREAT Vic Morrow was 22 Discharged from the US Navy and a little College under his belt, naturally he would appear "Older" than his years, especially the way men were back then.NOT like the Candy-Aasses of today!
@FTWEVERYONE . Vic Morrow was born 14 february 1929. Was Blackboard Jungle in the editing room from 1951 to 1955 ??? Nah, dont think so. Vic was 25-26 yrs old in this movie
Brilliant film, fantastically acted. I first read the book way back in the early 80's, then finally bought the film a couple of years ago. I love these old fashioned quality black and white movies. There is a hell of a lot to be said for films made in this era.
Vic Morrow channeling a young Brando........would love to see the whole flick...someone please post it. I can't be the only one who loves quality movies.
I just finished watching this movie for the first time today. I have to tell you, this movie is pretty good. It brought up important points about problems such as illiteracy and ignorance. I liked how Mr. Dadier showed his students the Jack and the Beanstalk cartoon to try and get around some of the problems and help them start a meaningful classroom discussion.
Awww, I want to see the next few minutes,Daddy-O!

Anyone wondering how the film ended....the kid got a week's detention and had to write 'I must not call the teacher 'Daddy-O' 10,000 times.

Is this what could have inspired Leiber and Stoller to write one of their signature lines?
(Who calls the English teacher Daddy-O?)

Seeing movies like this....I wouldnt be a teacher for quids!
Nor would I wanna be married to a teacher.
A punk kid like "Artie West" would be your worst nightmare.
He really was very, very intimidating.
Right up until the end, when he realized he was totally on his own against Mr Dadeay
Then he wasnt quite so tough.
Great Movie for its time
and an excellent portrayal of Artie West by Vic Morrow. He was superb!
and Glenn Ford and Sydney Poitier were pretty good too! :)
