  • Haha. I think Congress is finally starting to wake up. That is hard to beleive however, since Congress is a bunch of conservative pricks. Anyways, this tax is fantastic. The money should be going to programs that help smokers quit. None the less, at least the tax is going towards healthcare and not something silly like our nations defense or the Iraq war. Next we need to legalize drugs and tax them. The money would go to rehab facilities. To the man in this video: You are very dumb!

  • haha WOW. MAYBE congress is finally starting to wake up. hard to beleive though since its full of conservative idiots. anyways this tax is simply fantastic. the money should be going to programs to help smokers quit. not healthcare. but thats good that it is going to something like healthcare, rather than something like the iraq war or our nations defense lol. The next thing we need to do is make all drugs illegal and tax those heavily too. then allow the money to go towards rehab centers etc.

  • No we don't need 22 million new smokers, the plan raises the per-pack tax. Don't need a single new smoker. Dummass republican.

  • "Dummass" Democrats (besides not knowing how to actually spell "dumbass") think demand is inelastic regardless of how high taxes are jacked.

I can't wait until cigar-chomping, fedora-wearing gangsters with tommyguns run the cigarette market.

  • BUt with the people who are dying from lung cancer more people will be needed to replace them. Aren't you willing to keep the tax revenue coming in to help care for the children? How dare you sit there and not light up when the healthcare of poor children, and not so poor children is at stake. And I thought you libs were compassionate.

  • Well, if demand for cigarettes is inelastic, as the premise of your retort has as a given, then all the government needs to do is tax a single pack of coffin-nails for the full amount of their boondogg-, er, program. After all, if demand doesn't fall when prices rise, then someone will buy the pack.

  • Critical thinking is not yourstrong point. If I need unbased rhetoric and name calling I know who to go to.

  • Yes you do people die from smoking. Remember its oh so bad for your health someone is going to replace them. Yep the plan raises the per pack tax so we cant let people quit smoking we need that money. Everyone who quits smoking hurts a poor child.

  • This is so brilliant and done so well. S-CHIP is forcing smokers to become philanthropist prematurely. Actually, The Mob and the Mafia did this a long time ago to force businesses and shop owners to pony up so that their kids could have medical care. Back then, the Attorney's General called it extortion. And that's what S-CHIP is- extortion legalized by a bunch of scumbags.

  • I'm actually quite liberal and am really against this too.

If the healthcare issue is so important, there should be a tax-funded one for everyone, just not kids. Preying on people's vices is defeating, and it's also a yuppy movement. Why not use an alcohol tax? Because a lot of arm-chair liberals like to scream about the neo-con agenda over a bottle of cheap wine.

This is all self-defeating in the end.

  • Ladybracknel - Yes, the SCHIP program has been in effect since 1997 when the republican congress approved it. This video is making up statistics -- the increase in SCHIP was to be funded by increasing the tax from $.39 to $1.00 per pack, not by hoping 22 million new people will smoke. But relying on facts is not a conservative strongpoint in the U.S.

  • Only an idiot would think this tax benefits smokers. The leading cause of premature death is due to obesity. Anual US obesity health care related costs are higher than smoking related costs by 20 billion dollars. Smoker already pay for there own health care via medicar and private plans. This tax truely is unfair....Light up for the kids.

  • Amen! Smoke 'em if you got 'em! It's a free

country and we smokers are providing for our Nation's youth! I feel so much better about refusing to quit. Anybody got a light?....

  • Man, it makes sense. You want to provide healthcare for everyone, tax the people that are going to use it more to make sure its there.

  • Excuse me! Is this video a comment on a real US government policy? I am not an American, please tell me more.

  • hey that's pretty funny - wouldn't it be cool if that same guy did a parody of a smile-whitening toothpaste commercial?

  • I love the sarcasm. XD

  • Big T could turn this into a marketing scheme. "For every pack you buy, we will give $.xx to help our national treasure, the kids."

  • lol nice vid verry funny

  • This is brilliant. And well done, too.

  • Excellent video. Keep up the good work.

  • great video that helps spotlight the problem..it was fine without expanding it.then they messed it up

  • Brilliant!

    What blatant hipocrisy!

When will we learn that government always fouls it up.

  • Considering these are the same people implementing smoke bans, this is pure stupidity.

  • I finally get to do something for my country! Um...does this only include legal tobacco products?

  • This is hilarious! Well done!

  • Quality. I love it. The Dems are running one impressive Congress, let me tell you...
