I think you should be able to use the mounted units as walls, decoys and bags (make them hold elixirs and stuff like that)

And also, did someone say Zelda? xD No didn't think so.

I would say unequip your mounted units and use them as moveable walls amd quick exit tactics for your foot soldiers. I cannot tell you how many times Marcus (and others) as a Jerigan character saved my weaker units by using said tactics.
