  • This guy needs to chill out a bit.

  • gravy toss?

  • the 10 dislikes are kids who dont like the library

  • roses are red

    violets are blue

    i suck at rhyming

    refridgerator

  • @centereacan06 OMG i almost fell out of may chair XD

  • really informative and interesting

  • It is also the only place in the school....WITH BOOKS! xD

  • interesting video and very informative

  • My English class hated this.

Sigh...what has the world come to?

  • My name is Santiago :D

  • Oh, look, there's a little smudge on my computer screem. *rubs it* Oh, wait that's just the dislike bar.

  • I want to be an english teacher because of him

  • Makes me want to rush over to a library and start reading... WITH BOOKS

  • i love everything he does!

  • Wonderful!

  • 2:40 i do no care if the library is the only place in the school big enough to accomidate your meeting, it's also the only place in the school WITH BOOKS!!!

    thats my favorite part :D

  • was trying to get through this without smiling, i lost it at 2:47 lol.

  • Complete agreement as a student of a school that I'm pretty sure doesn't know how to use it's resources well enough. I know how it feels to not be able to find a computer for an in class project. I had to search 20 minutes around the building not only for a working computer, but for a computer that should have BEEN IN THAT CLASS ROOM. You would think a cart of laptops would have enough for a full class room but apparently not. Apparently that's ridiculous to think I deserve my in class laptop.

  • lewis black tlaking about school lol

  • 2:50-2:52

  • quiet like a library

  • I'm sorry, "for forty years I've served the interests of my students" How old is Taylor Mali?

  • @akrokid Taylor's not writing as himself.

  • @akrokid listen to the poem better... he wrote it from the point of view as his teacher.

  • Dr. Joseph D'Angelo is one hardcore badass of the education system. I must applaud.

  • I guess he said it was a true story...

  • I would love to say how funny and ludicrous this poem is, but sadly it is an all too common event. As a teacher, I can fully relate to this type of nonsense. Ugggh!

  • "The dean of instruction, would even consider cancelling one class's library period, in order to hold a meeting called 'facilities utilization' IS SO OBTUSE, I AM INCAPABLE OF APPRECIATING THE IRONY IN IT!!!" hahahahahahahaha The teacher who wrote that is my hero!!!

  • The Dean of instruction undermining a class for his administration. Sounds like what really goes on in schools. administrators are the death of education.

  • I need more Taylor Mali videos. This man inspires the shit out of me.

  • 7 people are Dr. Richard Blackstone, Dean of Instruction

  • 7 people are illiterate.

  • Dr. D'Angelo was this man's teacher in 5th and 6th grade.

  • After just finishing english lit,GCSE level, and thinking all of the poems we studied are ridiculous, I began to lose faith in what poetry could be. I then found this...

    thankyou. very much.

  • my names clarissa!

  • LOL that was a great piece of writing!!!!!!

  • Scott Walker and 6 of his republican senators watched this video...

  • LOVE it!

  • 2:41 to 2:50 has to be the funniest part. I laugh just thinking about it. :)

  • Met him at a conference and heard this performed along with several other of his poems, and loved the passion he exudes in his poetry. Super nice, intelligent, down to earth guy. This is a favorite!

  • i love that cristin o'keefe aptowicz just happens to be concluding the act. because, you know, she's got nothing better to do?? and by "she's got nothing better to do," i mean "i kneel at your feet, unworthy, in awe of your most splendorous works, my lady, my goddess, my shining, jiggling queen."

  • Wow-- I wish there were more people like that in the public school system...

  • @DopeDethrone

So he understands the feelings of the teacher who wrote these letters pretty much first hand. He has then exagerated his expression to get the point across.

He writes about a lot of stuff, and some of it you should take as expressive wording, rather than literal truth.

mostly I have heard intelligent thought.

Society wants to label conditions to peg mental illness. When really they're just good, bad, socially apt / unaware people.

  • @DopeDethrone

It's looks like you've had a bit of an attack by everyone. I don't do that so much ;)

I will agree that there are numerous pointers to things he dislikes.

Taylor Mali was a teacher for a long time. And a very good one, not just teaching english but, teaching how to live their lives with thought and honour. Having wrote poetry about the beauty and nobility of teaching and thus people becoming teachers, he dedicated his life to convicing people to become teachers, his goal atm 1000

  • Hahaha "It's the only place in the school WITH BOOKS!" Epic.

  • 1:22 AMEN!

  • As an elementary school Library Media Aide and a "returning adult student" in Library Science, I cannot stress enough the truth and importance in what Taylor Mali has to say about teaching, libraries, and the ludicrous things people say and do in regards to both.

Taylor, you are my hero - keep it up!!

  • As a Library Media Aide in an elementary school, I bow at your feet with gratitude and appreciation!

  • I kinda wish I had this guy as my 5th grade teacher.

  • @DopeDethrone Not all of it does, though. You should see the one about the Viking longship or the one about the dangling Steinway piano. They're deeply moving.

He gets outraged at things that are outrageous. That's as it should be. It is the rest of us who should be ashamed that we just accept the outrageous as the status quo.

  • the 7 dislikes are the administrators from the administrative meeting.

  • the red penis your friend

  • Comment removed

  • 777 Likes 7 Dislikes O.o STRAIGHT 7's I'm afraid to like it!

  • @DopeDethrone Does having bitterness, hatred and darkness inside you mean you are a bad person? We live in a world of darkness, with many things to hate and get bitter about. You may be right, he may be a delusional sociopath, I've never met him or know anyone whose lived with him long enough to tell, but the question is, is he right to be bitter and angry about the things he gets bitter and angry about? What else should we do; shrug our shoulders and say 'that's life'?

  • Favorite line: I would be the first to apologize for "editorializing through your secretary" if I thought that the statement "academic instruction" takes precedence over administrative meetings were a matter of opinion and not, in fact, a matter of fact, and not one I thought I would have to explain TO THE DEAN OF INSTRUCTION.

  • @DopeDethrone And my point is that he IS an actor, reading someone els's words. His videos are not performance pieces. He is a teacher, reading letters from another teacher, expressing frustration with the stupidity they have to fight from people who should KNOW better, just to be able to do their jobs as teachers.

It's NOT poetry. It's real life. Are we clear on that now? NOT AN ACT. REAL LIFE.

  • @DopeDethrone You're calling HIM crazy?? My god, are you off your medication? What an ignorant and paranoid thing to say! What is WRONG with this world?

  • @DopeDethrone Really? #1 All he is doing is reading what somebody else wrote in a real situation. Do you also feel screen actors that play righteously angry parts are 'bitter and hateful people who skin puppies.'? Frankly, the vibe I get from you is the same as the one I get from Dean Blackstone. Arrogance, self importance and delusional stupidity.

  • Very low audio!

  • This, and I mean almost exactly this, happened to me today. My teacher booked a conference room for several of us to use to practice presentations. Administrators were in there and they refused to leave because they "weren't quite finished" and "didn't want to move."

So we got shoved in a different, much less convenient room. After one of the kids pointed out to the librarian that schools are for the benefit of the students, we went back to our class and told our teacher. He showed us this.

  • its a shame mr mali is no longer teaching

  • this man has got the fucked up dept of education on lock. love it

  • im too drunk to understand whats going on

  • I love it!

  • I love it when teachers speak truth to ignorance. You rock, Mr. Mali.

  • This guy, is the best guy.

    Ever.

  • I, as a young librarian, actually said no to an administrator and watched him melt down at me for having the audacity of wanting the library available for people who had work to do there. I finally told him that even my parents never spoke to me as rudely as he was doing. He shut up and left. He never asked for something like that again. I wasn't fired....although I spent a few hours wondering whether I would be.

Thanks for all who keep libraries open for learning.

  • Wait, this was a poem?

I thought it was just sheer concentrated badass...

  • ugh so ok i can't make up my mind about taylor mali. on the one hand, he seems brilliant. on the other hand he seems too cocky to be worthy of my time. any thoughts? i want to like him but for some reason he rubs me the wrong way. lol.

  • @hazelgreenxoxo

the problem today is that for some reason confidence has become a bad thing. You say cocky, I say confident. And an entertainer who speaks with conviction entertains. Stop seeing self- assurance as a bad thing because it isn't. Watch "Like You know?" by Mali. That sums up what I've said

  • @hazelgreenxoxo I could see what you mean, how he seems kind of full of himself, but at the end of the day it's the words, not the person, that you're listening to, and Taylor's got some great and wise words to share.

  • @hazelgreenxoxo What's wrong with being cocky? It's much more tolerable than the lack of self-confidence that so many people in society exhibit today. When you're passionate about something, and you are good at it, you SHOULD be cocky.

  • The only place in the school WITH BOOKS!!!!

See why can't my teachers be like that?

  • I totally wish you had been my teacher.

  • @nohnoelle lol he is my teacher, he's a good guy, his passion is vastly entertaining, this is a fan favorite video of my school

  • I LOVE this poem. So far, I haven't had to defend keeping my school library open to the students, instead of closed for a meeting. . . . but if I do. . . I'm probably going to play this for whatever crazy person tries to close it.

  • So just like a real life school. ugh.

  • Smokin'!

  • @Lehmann108

    the poem or him? lol.

  • awesome!!!!!!!

  • "Dear Dick" lol

  • I don't care if the library is the only place big enough to hold your meeting, it's also the only place in the school WITH BOOKS!

I cracked up at that part, I cracked up at alot of parts(:

  • Awesome!!!

  • If you can make it through this poem without laughing at least once, you have absolutely no sense of humor.

  • Hear hear! Regular teachers have meetings after school, during lunch, and/or before school. Why should administrators be any different? GIVE THE KIDS THE LIBRARY BACK!!!

  • Yeah, still love you. I listen to your poetry over and over and think, yes. I need to play your vids here to the moronic legislature in Tallahassee, Florida.

  • I'm thinking about how to share this with our local board of education. Our cuts to education will result in the de facto axing of our school library by assigning the librarian to other duties.

  • "...is so obtuse that i am incapable of appreciating the irony in it!!!"

    LOL

  • ...this is a true story by the way...

  • "I do not care if the library is the only place in the school big enough to accommodate your meeting. It's also the only place in the school WITH BOOKS. >:["

That kind of made my day. Thank you, Mr. Mali! Wouldn't it have just been smarter to schedule his meeting AFTER school? Everyone could be happy.

  • haha I love this! I'm a teacher who had library time for my class canceled so that the principal could have an administrative meeting and watching this made me laugh so much!

  • I know this is the least inspiring and poetic of all of his stuff but it's my favorite lol it's so unexpected and really fun to listen to!

  • it is also the only facility WITH BOOKS!!! lol... that guy is great!

  • I hope to be a teacher like this one day

  • Perfect.

  • 100% true. The spirit of this is how all people should live life.

  • Absolutely loved it. =]

  • Holy crap... this made me laugh so hard

  • Library is srsbsnss

  • Hilarious!

  • ...it's also the only place in the school WITH BOOKS!!!!!

  • @SpykerC8Lav Yup, since we know now that the classrooms are devoid of them due to book bans and lack of funding.

  • @mdragoonx No kidding. I tried to get a course guide for my college and they didn't make them anymore, all "online now" but you can't always take them with you. Annoying.

  • Stop all this intellectual talk. One of you might damage my ignorance.

  • @TheDigitalreign Fight for your bliss.

  • @TheDigitalreign ignant

  • I'm glad there are still people in the world passionate about their jobs. Really, you make me consider education as a career.

  • Namaste

  • This is the single most hilarious thing I've ever heard in my life! Hahaha

"...it's also the only place WITH BOOKS!!!"

  • Shouldn't it be "if any one of my classes is denied the use..." rather than "are denied the use..." because of the one?

  • no, because "classes" is not singular

  • Alright, thanks. That always confuses me. My english teacher tried to explain it, but I obviously missed it.

  • The person who told you that was wrong. It would be "one of my classes is." One is the subject. Classes can't be the subject because it's a prepositional phrase. "Of my classes" can't be the subject. Though even if it weren't one would make it singular because one is individual.

  • classes isn't the subject. The subject is one, which is singular. So it would be "is."

  • er, yes actually. "one" is the subject; "of my classes" is a measly prepositional phrase. the verb has to agree with the subject, not what modifies the subject.

but most people generally don't give a rat's arse, as long as your meaning is clear.

  • No, the use of "one" doesn't alter the subject, which is still the "classes", being plural. Accordingly, the qualifier is still "are".

  • Heh, it easy to see how one might make that mistake given the confusion, eh? In "one of my classes is," the subject is "one" and "my classes" is the object of the preposition "of." So, for subject-verb agreement, it would be "one of my classes is." You wouldn't say "one of my friends are a guy," or "one of my books are green."

All that sentence diagramming you hated had a purpose, no?

  • No, one is the subject. Objects of the preposition can not be subjects of a sentence. Of is, in fact, a preposition. Following that, classes is the object of the preposition. Therefore, classes can not be the subject. One is therefore the subject.

  • yes, b/c of the "one"

  • Whoo! I watched this in my education class, and I loved it, I can't believe that something like that actually happened! So great!

  • Loved it.

  • i know phil tacata!

  • I had a teacher like you. His name is Phil Tacata. He taught biology at my high school. He's amazing too. :)

  • Too few teachers in this world are as passionate as this man.

  • I was fortunate to have mostly passionate English teachers who really gave me a love of writing.

My grade 12 music teacher was also very passionate and is still a good friend to this day.

  • That's still too few! I have had quite a few passionate teachers, and it's still too few. In fact, you can never have too many, I believe.

  • AWESOME!

  • -THUMBS UP-

  • Where's the audio? The levels are so low I can't understand but every few words.

  • user error.

  • Actually, no. And that wasn't a nice thing to write.

  • Blame Apple. Stupid MacBooks have the worst speakers ever. Still, the levels here could stand some normalization. It's not really necessary to have his yelling 50dB louder than the base talking. ;-) Fantastic Writing and performance, as always from Taylor! :-)

  • If you turn your volume all the way up it's pretty decent sound. It's not the macbook speakers. I have a macbook and all of his other videos are loud enough, this one is just lower. It's still possible to hear though, so I think it's fine...

  • this is my favorite poem of yours, mr. mali!

  • Why the hell did Kay Ryan get $35 grand to be a national treasure and no one has heard of Taylor Mali?! I swear...no justice, no peace!!!

  • Seriously...this man is amazing.

  • I almost spit out my pepsi laughing so hard at this poem. Fantastic.

  • AMEN

  • On behalf of school librarians everywhere, I thank you!

  • Having worked in a library for 9 years, this is one of the most hyserical videos I've ever seen on this site.

  • my school uses the libary for meetings to, its SO MESST UP.

  • Extremely funny.

  • That would be a pretty awsome kiai. "Books!!"

  • The public school system NEEDS more teachers like this, desperately.

  • Gravitas! I love his Latin references. And the "with books" line was hilarious! xD

  • I worked in a library during college. Bless you, Taylor.

  • He is the reason you teach, isn't he?

  • "i will not reschedule any of my classes' library periods for any administrative meeting" ...thats goddamn right!!!

  • WITH BOOKS! xD

  • Absolutely fantastic.

  • Love this poem Taylor. So true

  • this poem is awesome!!!!!! :D

  • Wow. I love this, beyond words, and I love Taylor Mali.

(And the sound is perfect for me.)

  • same, the sound works.

  • hhahahhahahahaaaaaa

  • Damn great but, is there a way to improve the sound?

  • agreed, these videos are really quiet.

but damn man - the poem and then the delivery! amazing!
