@WindsweptHQ i think on this and 90s grass djokovic and nadal would get destroyed by good serve. Djokovic could have chance in this grass but his serve will be attacked and let him down.
@WindsweptHQ Federer didn't beat Safin that much in GS, and unlike AR and LH, Safin was able to beat him at a GS at his peak. Safin's problems were his head and his injuries. But yeah, Roddick and Hewitt would have 5, 6 slams if it wasn't for Fed.
Actually when Hewitt won Wimbledon the grass had already been modified to play slower and bounce higher. They slowed it down in 2001. Neither Fed or Hewitt have won Wimby on true fast 90s paced grass.
@splendid1000 cant be said about hewitt winning. However federer can win on 90s grass based on his properties. 1hbh and good reaction, serve read, good volleys, aggressive flat game. He grew up on this kind of tennis not only countered it but invent a new all rounder style.
And Fed is not really an all rounder now. Noone is really ever since they slowed down the surfaces. Serve N Volley is dead for the most part. Players only really serve n volley under specific circumstances where they have their opponent on the run and have total control of the point. Thats not traditional serve n volley, especially on grass and fast hard courts. Fed would be much more serve n volley if the courts hadnt been modified. The slowing of the surfaces forced Fed to master the baseline.
man federer has aged soo fast. he looks like a old man now but hes only in his early 30s. i think its cuz hes always training under the hot sun to condition himself
@pablotjob different grass my friend..when leyton was good on it ball did not bounce at shoulder level, players like soderling and also nadal would not have a chance.
@Mirren81 To be honest, no. Federer is definitely the king of the grass surface since Sampras. Nadal is also above Hewitt. If we talk about one of the better grass court players of the past 10 years, Hewitt would be one of the top guys. I mean, even Roddick had a pretty good grasscourt career, but he obviously lacked the big win at Wimbledon, otherwise he would be above Hewitt as well. I won't go into the 90's and before. There are just too many good/great/epic/legendary players.
@davd1986 Roddick's footwork is too lousy for Wimbledon... until they made the courts more uniform. Of course, Roddick has been getting better too, but not that much..

If it wasn't for the legend that is Federer, Hewitt, Safin, Roddick would have won numerous slams before the domination by Rafa and Djokovic

Fed would do just fine on 1990s grass; he would duel with Sampras often.

Roger has changed his forehand since 2004, it seems. His elbow was more bent in this match than it is today.

@Mirren81 Hewitt did win Wimbledon and did have another title or two at Queens but he really isn't a 'grass king.'

hewitt has won everywhere on grass - wimbledon, davis cup final, queens x 4, halle, rosmalen
he is only one to beat Sampras and Federer on grass and you dont think he is a king of that surface?
