@willsco76@Superhero6734 this was because the headtruss on the north tower was higher, there was a hump/ bump on the roof where the antenna was mounted on!
Very high quality filming ! The helicopter pilot and the cameraman are real pros !
Thank you !
Technically, a Batwing antenna is inherently broadband. This allows two TV stations to share the same antenna. (Channel 4 = 66 to 72 MHz and channel 5 = 76 to 82 MHz)
@willsco76 They say that the North Tower was taller than the South Tower! But it doesn't look like it! The North and South Tower look like they are the same height! But the North Tower was 1,368 ft tall and the South Tower was 1,362 ft tall! But they both look like they are the same height!
when was the antenna installed on the north tower? if anyone has seen pics and video from the early 70's, it's not there. just a few of the shorter ones...
Great tour of the rooftops and antenna farm, I've never seen them in such detail before. It's interesting that they kept the helipads even after the FAA decertified them. Does anyone know if they made regular use of them at some point? And aside from the rescue operation following the 93 bombing were there any further landings made?
That's one heck of a stabilization system they have. Really neat seeing this so close up, shame it's no linger there but at least a fraction of it is in the museum..
New York City in Winter is BY FAR the coldest place I have ever visited ...I've seriously never experienced anything like it. It literally is like an ice box.
@willsco76 fly Bin Ladens airlines, fly directly to your office. HAHAHA..HA! you know Your government is behind the 9/11. Maybe they hate ice to.. hehe
@Colortiniz I live in England and back in 1969 ice built up on the TV mast near my house (Emley Moor) which caused the whole structure to collapse 'in short' RF radiation would not melt the ice. Really good, interesting filming by the way.
what a real good close up of the antenna, you get a better picture of just how big this antenna was,i wouldnt have liked the engineers job of going up it for maintainance tho..... cheers for upload rated 5****
@DarrellPeel it was the same camera as on 9/11 it's just the distance they were from the building, they were right on top of it here but they had to be 5 miles back from the building on 9/11. plus this is later in the morning than the 9/11 attacks. there was also a different photographer in the air, April Lamonica on 9/11 instead of whoever's in this video (dan rice?)
We were made aware that ice was falling off the tower. Since the chopper was up anyway for the morning news, they were asked to make a pass by WTC.
An accumulation of ice on a transmitting antenna can cause significant RF to be reflected back towards the transmitter, instead of out to the antenna.
@chyrongeek they didn't want the ice to freeze the antenna over because sometimes when there is ice on an antenna, it could effect the transmitter and on-air feed in big ways
Backup. These beacons, from Flash Technology, did a daytime stobe flash (40 fpm) as seen in the video. The FAA lighting spec for WTC specified red lighting at night. These units had a small motorized red filter which would enage to surround the flash tube for nighttime lighting. The nighttime red flash was 20 fpm, with about a 50/50 (on/off) duty cycle, and in operation appeared similar to old-style incandescent beacons.
@kiotr2009 If my memory serves me correctly the red light at night also faded from on to off, I guess unlike the ESB's current one which is just on and off like flicking a light switch. Also, didn't the Trade Center's antenna have white floodlights shining on it at night?
It makes me happy ,sad to see the twin towers again. My friend Bill Steckman, WA2ACW, a fellow ham radio operator and WNBC-TV transmitter boss was probably working that icy day. The antenna was his baby.He went down with the building 9/11/01. He kept the transmitter on the air so all New Yorkers would know we were under attack. After the phones went dead, he radioed that he was leaving the transmitter up and was going to try to get down to the street. One of many unsung heros that fateful day.
Can somebody explain why they didn't rebuilding the same buildings?

Back in the 70's, a trucking client of ours had their antenna on the WTC and regularly conversed with their office in Boston via Mt Monadnock, NH.

I believe the total height of the North Tower ( 1 World Trade Center) from street level to the top of the Television mast was 1,716 Ft.

@superhero6734 it's because the North Tower's roof raises slightly at the foot of the antenna to accommodate it.

By helicopter they could easily install a bomb in the WTC. This is the explanation why on 9/11 the antenna dropped first.
