This is a poor recording. That is the reason that lies behind the complaints. She does have a rich and expressive presense....and almost jumped out of that dress!
She possesses a very beautiful voice that is absolutely undeniable. Unfortunately, having seen her live in concert I was really disappointed. She was very distant, cold and made absolutely no emotional connection with the audience. She even appeared arrogant in pauses. Her singing was technically absolutely supreme, though.
@raaadja99 Thanks for confirming my impressions! I have never seen her live but that's the impression of her personality I get from watching her here on youtube. I wonder why and how pianists are never like that (obviously because communication with the public is all they can offer, they don't have the possibility to blow them away with just a booming voice), while opera singers are most of the time pompous assholes, and not rarely, very uneducated people.
@ididete That may just be her stage persona. I've heard very differently about her in real life (tho I don't know her personally). I think she's known as outspoken but sincere.
Most opera singers today are actually very educated (most are college grads with post-grad music degree) and very nice and down to earth! There are a handful who are pompous arses, yes, that's the same with every other group of people in life. It isn't fair to attribute the behavior of the very few for the entire group.
This is a good performance But I prefer a more lush sound. The extra breaths rob the piece of senousness, The slow rempo is trying and the legato is not smooth. I prefer Rita Gorr, Fiorenza Cossoto, Ebe Stignani,, Ewa Podles,, Giulietta Simionato,, Rise Stevens, Irene Minghini Cattaneo and Sigrid Onegin among others.
Apart from Callas, i think it's the best performance i listened to.... Even then, i think they are both awesome, so wouldn't even rate either as better than the other.
i've heard this from callas and now i can't like anyone else's interpretation. her breathing here is horrible, too often too strong. I also prefer a more piercing sound of the voice.
@Bee92iBella I love the Callas version too. It is really expressive. Even though she wasn't a mezzo, she sung it wonderfully. I have a recording of Samson et Dalila with Borodina and Cura. I like Borodina in that recording better than here.
I've seen Borodina on the stage couple of times before and never thought she was great. This performance completely changed my opinion about her. Her singing was so moving that I was getting goose bump and chill for entire seven minutes and my eyes are welling up with tears. I don't even have words to describe this performance.
What breath control! It's simply mind boggling. I attempted this aria in my private study and I'm a 6 foot 200 pound tenor and my lungs are pretty much a tank, but even I had so much difficulties controlling the breath. To take this tune as slowly as she is and hold the breath that long....it's powerful.

I think that she could sing Strauss an Mahler lieder and chamber music, it seems not a voice for opera staging. Bb is not so good as somebody commented.
I see many people think that olga is a contralto and I understand it perfectly, her lows are so good (but not so low)as Anderson's, she is known as a mezzo but she sounds like a contralto, her high b flat is amazing, her voice reminds me a little bit of Horne's and no doubt: she is the best Dalila ever!
She is my favorite for this role. She sings this song beautifully and so tenderly that even I am seduced by her. She makes one understand why Samson fell prey to her!
Maybe her singing isn't so good on here, but I have just seen her yesterday as Dalila and she has gotten much better at it, clear French and much more dramatic and sensible. Her voice has also become more flexible towards the high notes. But she has gotten a very big Diva allure, she wouldn't come greet again on stage after the performance because the clapping wasn't hard enough for her!! she's going the same way as Battle I'm afraid...
If this is to destroy an aria... I can't believe what I am reading, indeed! Borodina has a velvet voice and has a perfect fiato which enables her to perform this tempo as well as a command of her breath which allows her to do the pianissimi.
