  • la castrazione moderna.

  • Delightful performance. Superb voice, suits the part perfectly.

  • Why the high note at the end?

  • This is a poor recording. That is the reason that lies behind the complaints. She does have a rich and expressive presense....and almost jumped out of that dress!

  • Listen to the same aria with Shirley Verret and Vickers

  • She possesses a very beautiful voice that is absolutely undeniable. Unfortunately, having seen her live in concert I was really disappointed. She was very distant, cold and made absolutely no emotional connection with the audience. She even appeared arrogant in pauses. Her singing was technically absolutely supreme, though.

  • @raaadja99 Thanks for confirming my impressions! I have never seen her live but that's the impression of her personality I get from watching her here on youtube. I wonder why and how pianists are never like that (obviously because communication with the public is all they can offer, they don't have the possibility to blow them away with just a booming voice), while opera singers are most of the time pompous assholes, and not rarely, very uneducated people.

  • @ididete That may just be her stage persona. I've heard very differently about her in real life (tho I don't know her personally). I think she's known as outspoken but sincere.

Most opera singers today are actually very educated (most are college grads with post-grad music degree) and very nice and down to earth! There are a handful who are pompous arses, yes, that's the same with every other group of people in life. It isn't fair to attribute the behavior of the very few for the entire group.

  • This is a good performance But I prefer a more lush sound. The extra breaths rob the piece of senousness, The slow rempo is trying and the legato is not smooth. I prefer Rita Gorr, Fiorenza Cossoto, Ebe Stignani,, Ewa Podles,, Giulietta Simionato,, Rise Stevens, Irene Minghini Cattaneo and Sigrid Onegin among others.

  • Superb,simply superb.TY Gabba02 for posting.

  • Apart from Callas, i think it's the best performance i listened to.... Even then, i think they are both awesome, so wouldn't even rate either as better than the other.

  • she has the sexiest voice ever!!

  • totally beautiful.

  • i've heard this from callas and now i can't like anyone else's interpretation. her breathing here is horrible, too often too strong. I also prefer a more piercing sound of the voice.

  • @Bee92iBella I love the Callas version too. It is really expressive. Even though she wasn't a mezzo, she sung it wonderfully. I have a recording of Samson et Dalila with Borodina and Cura. I like Borodina in that recording better than here.

  • meravigliosa

  • I've seen Borodina on the stage couple of times before and never thought she was great. This performance completely changed my opinion about her. Her singing was so moving that I was getting goose bump and chill for entire seven minutes and my eyes are welling up with tears. I don't even have words to describe this performance.

  • A superb DIVA.

    Alce 2008

  • what a beautiful tone! Dont know about all the rest, but the tone!

  • BRAVO!!!!

  • see also Elena Cernei!

  • !Que maravillosa versión de esta sublime aria! Bravo Borodina, inmensa.

  • This interpretation is so BEAUTIFUL...tHANK YOU FOR SHARING IT. HER VOICE IS SO SWEET FOR THE SCENE OF THE TENTATION...JUST PERFECT..

  • Beautiful

  • Love that dark rich coffee sound. Beautiful! Wonderful tone.

  • Nah man!

  • so intimate

  • I love you

  • What breath control! It's simply mind boggling. I attempted this aria in my private study and I'm a 6 foot 200 pound tenor and my lungs are pretty much a tank, but even I had so much difficulties controlling the breath. To take this tune as slowly as she is and hold the breath that long....it's powerful.

  • check Jessye NOrmans version, it is even slower. and absolutely amazing

  • Her voice is simply exceptional. Bravo Olga

  • thank god for Borodina...

  • Her singing is so tuching, loved her gentle and at a time, stong voice . Thanks for posting it.

  • I never tire of listening to Borodina, She is incomparable. and lovely to boot. My heart goes out to callasexperience

Thta hr or she can only criticise perfection.

    Luvinblume

  • I thought it was very beautiful.

Very difficult to sustain that slow temp

but she did it very well.

    A beautiful B flat.

  • This is singing...one of the last real skilful and talented Mezzos of our days..... Brava!

  • I love it!!! The best Dalila for me.

  • I love Olga

  • A perfect Russian Dalila (Irina Arkhipova as archetype...)

  • oh my god that french! its just DRIPPING with beauty!

  • no, it's in the score- for samson...the solo version has delilah singing it to fill in the gap in the music left when samson's not around, hehe.

  • what's the meaning of that finale samson je t'aime not in the score? just to show off her high notes?

  • That's the way this aria is done in concerts, of course, not every Diva can do it with this kind of mastery.

  • Borodina's performance is outstanding! What a dark, seductive voice, just as Dalila was intended to be!

  • Olga, i always thought you are a great artist!

  • This is my favorite rendition of this aria. She sings it so beautifully and tenderly! Samson had no chance.

  • What a beautiful voice and you can understand her french!!! Brava!! Is that Gergiev conducting?

  • Looks like Gergiev indeed - conducting without a toothpick!

  • You know him!!! Used to be a pencil....or nothing "fingers, fingers"!

  • Yes it is!

  • BRAVA, and she is a mezzo, listen to some of her Rossini!

  • I see many people think that olga is a contralto and I understand it perfectly, her lows are so good (but not so low)as Anderson's, she is known as a mezzo but she sounds like a contralto, her high b flat is amazing, her voice reminds me a little bit of Horne's and no doubt: she is the best Dalila ever!

  • fantastica donna

  • Beautiful voice but a nonchalant Dalila...

    A taste of oratorio.

    Needs french vitamines!

  • HAhahahahahahaha!

  • She is my favorite for this role. She sings this song beautifully and so tenderly that even I am seduced by her. She makes one understand why Samson fell prey to her!

  • so far my favorite

  • I love her voice....

  • not my favourite vocally but she understands the aria better than other singers

  • not bad for a contralto, talk about a blind B flat, she got it. Great expression through out.

  • she's a mezzo

  • It was a very tender rendition. Not the best vocally. But I'd rather hear it sung this way than a runaway bull in a china shop.

  • Maybe her singing isn't so good on here, but I have just seen her yesterday as Dalila and she has gotten much better at it, clear French and much more dramatic and sensible. Her voice has also become more flexible towards the high notes. But she has gotten a very big Diva allure, she wouldn't come greet again on stage after the performance because the clapping wasn't hard enough for her!! she's going the same way as Battle I'm afraid...

  • If this is to destroy an aria... I can't believe what I am reading, indeed! Borodina has a velvet voice and has a perfect fiato which enables her to perform this tempo as well as a command of her breath which allows her to do the pianissimi.

    I loved it!

Thank you to the person who uploaded this clip.

    Raquel Barbieri

  • I do agree. Borodina is a Dalila with expression and a voice that allows her to sing pianissimo - that's very rare today.

  • destroyed the aria.

  • Really? I disagree, i thought it was sweetly sung, not the best by any means, but still sweet. Her French is clear too.

  • Sorry, but Tendrésse is not french! She sings very beautiful, but from the seducive passion is noting left over, she seems more a Michaella.
