A strategy evolved by newborn babies and CATS, to form an emotional attachment to the nearest powerful adult in order to maximize the probability that this adult will enable—at the very least—the survival of the child / cat if not also prove to be a good parent figure.
This syndrome is considered a prime example for the defence mechanism of identification.
.
Cats are identifying or 'copying' the behaviour of the adult / parent; it doesn't evaluate, just copies.
My Mother was cat judge and bred cats - we always had about 7 around the house. One female 'adolescent' would occasionally carry a sock around. Mum said it was a vestige of her instinct to participate in raising kittens - in a small group the younger females would 'babysit' including carrying them. And before anyone points out Dusty must have thousands of imaginary kittens, I never said the left over instinct from perhaps millions of years ago made sense now!
Dusty the Springfield Cat Song: Being good isn't always easy, No matter how much I stole., When I started sweet taking home, He'd come tell me everything is alright, Through the back yard we'd go stalking, Can I get away again tonight?. How well I remember, I took that Preacher's clothes. Stealing knickers from them on the sly. Taking time to pinch things, Stealing then they're all mine! Looking to see how much I'd stolen. The only cat who could ever steal things.
@kangadillo Dear Kangaroo, Nope it is not hoarder ;Hoarding is something else. . Kleptomania, (Greek: kleptein, "to steal", and, "mania") is an irresistible urge to steal items of trivial value. . Cats with this disorder are compelled to steal things, generally, but not limited to, objects of little or no significant value, like pens, paper clips, paper and tape. Some kleptomanicats may not even be aware that they have committed the theft. . . Cheers. from, del-boy.
But now it occurs to me that this cat's behavior reminds me of nest-building, like when birds go out and gather materials to make a nest. Even though this cat isn't building anything, I wonder if there's some connection.
Rather than building it's own nest, I think, rather that the cat is expessing gratiude:
'The term REPARATION was used by Melanie Klein (1921) to indicate a psychological process, something more than the making of amends...reparative gestures towards the damaged world'. Or damaged parents (OWNERS OF THE CAT, IN THIS CASE).
The cat wishes to make amends for taking advantage of the kindness of its owners.
@Cccuba Of course! I can't believe I didn't think of that! I had a cat a long time ago named Emma. She was an indoor cat, but our building had mice, and sometimes I came home from work and found a dead mouse on my living room rug. The vet told me Emma was leaving me a gift, a tribute. (I would have preferred a new TV, but hey, it's the thought that counts.)
@kangadillo Dear Clare, Thanks for your nice responses. . The cat is giving because it is mimicking the parent, the cat is not thinking of the parent objectively but subjectively; the cat is not conscious of any actual debt to the parent. Rather the cat is identifying with the parent. . Aren't cats great ! . Cheers. from, del-boy.
I'd kill it if I found that cat in my home stealin my shit !! cats are bad but a cat burglar !?!?! what the hell .... hahahahaha ! and shiii wow they are so serious about that news ! haha
I think that cat needs something to end this obsession, perhaps a mate to keep him inside all night? Yep, one of them stories you could never dream up in your head folks.
@TheMissingno No they give it back to who they think it belongs to or the owners come looking for it because it said "Well we know where to go" so dont go crazy.
"Meow, Meow" ~~~~ What a beautiful cat and smart too:)!:)! You go Miss Kitty Cat Burglar. Thank goodness no one tries to steal this purrfectly charming "klepto" cat!
If someone's cat came into my yard and stole my stuff or my kids' toys, I'd want them to lock him in at night or get rid of him. Why is it that cat owners think the rest of the world wants to share their cat's bad habits, have their cars scratched when the cat climbs all over the hood or have their kids' sand boxes used as a litter box? Worst of all, it's usually these same inconsiderate losers who want dogs kept on leashes at all times.
@sapienthetero I'm a cat owner but agree they should be kept in at night, but for their protection. Cats have retractable claws and I very much doubt one could scratch auto paintwork. I have a shiny jet-black 1961 T-bird and my cats walk over it and it remains completely scratch-free. I'm also an auto appraiser and if a cat should happen to scratch a car it would no doubt be minor, only in the clear coat and easily removed with buffing. A living cat is worth more than a car.
@silvertbird1 Perhaps a living cat is worth more to you than a car, but not all non-cat owning car owners are likely to agree with you :-).
I have personal knowledge of a car hood scratched by a cat at night. Even if you were right about the severity of the scratches (you weren't in the case I'm citing), cat owners have no right to allow their pets to damage their neighbors' property. Glad to hear you agree cats should be kept in at night, and hope you control them during the day too.
@tomntmj Those whose contributions to a debate are limited to ad hominem attacks are usually a) bereft of the intellectual capacity needed to make a coherent point and b) liberals. You're reading far more into my user name than is really there.
i saw this on animal planet a couple nights ago the owners took everything he stole & put it all out in the front & told ppl to come look & claim there stuff over 200 items were returned
my neighbors dog used too steal stuff from us, usually my shoes. I would just have to look in my neighbors yard and find them. But the dog was too cute to get mad at and I actually miss him since we moved. That cat was really clever to get whole sets of items.
This cat is cute and I'm glad the neighbors have a sense of humor about him. It's nice to see people just laughing little inconveniences off and learning to enjoy life.
@minpin03165 He is probably one of those "kids" (or still is) that drive their noisy souped up machines, through quite neighborhoods during the middle of night, waking everyone up, while blasting the radio with full on bass.
I had a dog that did the same thing. I never knew he was able to get through the fence until I saw him squeezing under it one night with the neighbors remote control in his mouth.
@BlownNitroPontiacFan You don't seem to know much about cats. For your information - Cats bury their shit and that cat didn't seem to destroy anything, just carried it around. That cat is probably a lot smarter than you are.
@BlownNitroPontiacFan Yeah, well, it wouldn't have hurt for you to have been aborted, but don't see that happening anytime soon unless someone can find a time machine.
@BlownNitroPontiacFan its not like the cat knows that stealing stuff is a crime & he didnt destory anything & also cats poop in sand or dirt & burry it actually fertilizes stuff (just saying) u just have no humor ..i bet ur a lil wannabe racer with ur fake spoilers that look like shit & walmart spray paint & u prob just cut ur muffler off to make ur car sound like it has balls & just annoy ur neighbors way more than this cat ever would
The owners should keep the cat locked up for its safety and theirs. Wouldnt want some neighbor coming over saying your cat stole shit that it actually didnt lol.
This is cute, but I don't understand why they don't keep him inside at night. Not everyone has a sense of humor, and some ass could get angry enough to hurt Dusty.
OMG this neighbourhood is awsome for being so relaxed about this! If my cat did this, I'd set up a website for the cat's stolen goods, and the person who had the most items stolen each month would win a free coffee :-)
Soon he will qualify for State Office there in California... Some are born with that gifting, while others have to practice their forays... He will need additional training as the competition he will run into in Sacramento - is without peer!
I had a klepto cat that looked a lot like this one. Her name was Millie, but became Not So Innocent Millicent. Socks, gloves, slippers, ropes, bungies were her primary booty from these night heists.
Someone poisoned my night prowling cat. Hope Dusty stays safe while being allowed to prowl at will. Not everyone will find this cute and adorable. Keep him safe.
@skrallen I agree with you! My cat looked just like that, I miss her every day :( She wouldn't go klepto, but she thought everyone's house was hers. She loved to nap on everyone's sofas or beds. Good thing in my neighborhood everyone knew where she belonged
officer: you have the right to remain silent, anything you meow can and will be held against you in the feline court of law.
just kidding lol :) that is one smart cat....seriously he goes out to get one part of a bikini and then goes back for the other part! wow. now i have heard of a lot of different kinds of thieves....just not a cat thief. now thats pretty neat :)
That's too cute! It even looks like he's wearing a mask. I'm just glad everyone can be a good sport about it in the neighborhood instead of complaining or wanting him locked in at night. He's smart enough to get matching sets.
That cat is like...strawberry sounding...

That's too cute! It even looks like he's wearing a mask. I'm just glad everyone can be a good sport about it in the neighborhood instead of complaining or wanting him locked in at night. He's smart enough to get matching sets.
