Lol, let's just all agree that Kairi's for the most part a damsel-in-distress plot device. She gets kidnapped once per game (well, the games where she's in more than one scene or not imaginary.). The most central relationship explored in Kingdom Hearts was for the most part the rivalry/friendship of Riku and Sora. Also, Tetsuya Nomura was probably appeasing the yaoi-fanbase just enough to not anger his other customers (the scene where Sora's on his knees and crying for Riku for several minutes)

I just thought of something...forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I just thought of a reason why Sora was so awkward during that hug.Besides the fact that he promised Kairi he'd bring Riku back and was in front of her, a year later, with still no idea where Riku was.

Nomura is the creator though. In one of his interviews he says that he argued over how many seconds the shot of sora and kairi holding hands in the ending should be and in the end he got his way (he wanted it shorter than the other guy.)
