Yeh we should really invest in our tram network (not) just leave it with the buses and yeah because right now Ireland is so great financially that we have excessive amounts of money to spend on public transport.
Dublin has to be the most boring and morbid town in the world and people who live there just dont know life or there own self-worth its like a prison because almost every bar and food-store has arrogant polish security gaurds on them and everybody judges you for simple things like the way you dress acked behave walk and talk its SICK get the fuck out and live your life . You cannot exspress your true self in Dublin because the culture is so exstremley different to everywhere
Typical whinge. Most EU countries heavily susidise their public transport networks. The problem with the Irish is that they want everything they see on the continent but aren't willing to pay for it. Solution = more tax and/or put the near 50% who don't pay income tax back into the taxation system.
Today another damning report into the investigations surrounding Irish Rail and safety issues concerning the collapse of the Malahide Viaduct. Basically just by sheer luck Irish Rail got away with slaughtering a 1,000 commuters. The litany of incompetence and shody work practices at Irish Rail are shocking. Yet reports on CIE companies come out like this every few years. Irish Rail pay huge salary to train drivers. Service is shit, slow and dangerous.
Luas is great for one reason. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CIE.
The trams are reliable and work great. How really "expensive" is Luas compared to all of the CIE horrible services and they decades of strikes and industrial disputes, work-to-rule and Union walk outs over no Kit-Kats in the CIE canteen.
Luas may be expensive, but it is a baragin compare to what the shite CIE offers in terms of public transport in Dublin.
Dublin Bus drivers go on strike is a bus stop is moved 10 meters.
Bordeaux has a three-line tram system and the city is smaller than Dublin. A one way ticket (max. price) is €1,10 and 10 tickets for €10. A regular Luas fare is about €2,20 and a weekly ticket costs like €24.
the luas charges high because there's a very low population in Ireland especially in Dublin compared to other capital cities & Dublin is a rich city even in the recession kind of because of the small population in dubli....You dumb fuck
Where did this person get the fare for the London Underground, it is alot dearer then the fare showen. Also the Underground has 6 zones for most lines, with the met having 9 zones. Since this person has given the max price for the Luas, they should give the max price for the underground. To give a fair comprassment. Also I have payed €2 for 4 zones on the Luas Red line, using the smart card.
Where did this person get the price of the fare for the london underground, it is not that cheap. Plus there is 6 zones for most of the lines and the met has 9 zones. Since this person showed the max fare for the luas, they should show the max fare for the london underground. And you will find it is dearer.
If you use the Luas you should pay for using it, they need to make money to keep it going. Also it is people like you who cause the luas to have high fares. If you don't want to pay the dearer fare, then get yourself a smart card. Also you little game is up. @stevegorm1990
@lightleader2 Its been very close, my trick now is buy a can of heinz big soup and empty it into a tayto bag (if possible warm it in the microwave first) when the inspector comes on pour the soup all over your face and jumper. When he asks for your ticket go to hug him he will soon sit you down and tell you not to worry. This also works for junkies. If you cant find big soup eating cat food will have the same effect.
@lightleader2 still havent been caught by the way. nearly got caught at beechwood last week but luckly ive been watching loads of wrestlemanias so im a dab hand at double close lines, i even Irish whipped one back on to the luas , gardai arrived before i had the chance to do a suplex but next time thats the first move I pull out.
That won't work easily in Europe. In London for example you can go anywhere with the tube and anywhere with the buses. The tube being much faster is therefore more expensive. If they were the same price, everyone will flock to the tube, which is already overpacked as it is. Europe and North America's transport cannot be compared. Here we have a love affair with the car and public transport is not so heavily relied on. Especially in the West.
Thanks for this excellent. Another ripp off from the irish. They always seem to justify their high prices and poor mouth themselves off to others. Irish are cheats. Other German cities have also very inexpensive fares for greater distances. Bus fares in Dublin are a ripp off and the service is astonishingly bad. I would not support Dublins transport system as it is total disaster. Thumbs down to Dublin and the irish Government who are just total incompetents. I know because I am irish!!.
i can understand what this video is about but you also have to remember ireland is the higest paid per capita in the world.... so the ticket prices reflect that its obv not made for tourists but the general public of Eire
Munich is about the same size as Dublin. It has six metro (u-bahn) lines and lots of s-bahn (a DART-like system) lines. It also has 14 tram lines. They all link up. Munich's main station also has 36 main line platforms (that excludes the metro and s-bahn lines).
90 minutes north of Munich is Nuremberg. Nuremberg has an u-bahn (metro) with 3 lines, an s-bahn system and loads of tram lines. And did I mention that Nuremberg is HALF the size of Dublin?
too small to have a metro? Prague is the same size as Dublin and has very efficient 3 underground lines which are a lot quicker and cheaper than any underground in Spain or Italy.
Yeah, when the luas came out we had one of the highest standards of living (before the baking crisis and global recession). So that's why it is expensive because, in the good times people had the money for it and the luas makes a loss liek every metro and railway in the world, it contributes to budget deficits, never makes a profit so they need to make the deficit as small as they can and the tickets aren't that expensive compare to privately owned bus companies who charge 1.60 for a child.
In fairness Dublin seriously needs the metro to hurry up, the city centre is tiny and seriously overcrowded because there are no transport options outside Grafton Street and O'Connell street so the shops all battle to be right in the city centre because they don't get the footfall outside it. When the metro opens we'll see places like Parnell Square, Drumcondra, The Lower Quays and Baggot street becoming part of the real city centre. I don't agree with this guy though, the luas is great.
of course the Luas in Dublin is more expensive, we have one of the highest wages in the world! so of course everything is more expensive here. also, buy a monthly ticket for 73€ for all zones, use 50 times a month, works out at €1.46 a go which is comparable to all the citiies in your video
Luas is overpriced and the two lines not linked up is a joke. Its alway busy too so they are turning out a big profit. The proposed METRO is now to be cancelled with a hugh waist to all architects etc competing for the job. Ireland is run by very stupid people and they are an embarresment.
dublin's public transport is probably the only public transport on the planet which is more expensive to use than a usage of a private car with all the expenses for single person.
I think the Luas' tickets are too expensive as well. The problem is that public transportation in Dublin is more expensive than anywhere else. Does anyone know the reason?
I think one reason is that all the other systems are extremely heavily subsidised by their respective governments. Luas gets no government funding or subsidy.
And btw, a load of other teenagers take it like everyday and half of them don`t even pay for a ticket because they are so packed its impossible to get your ticket checked!
Well I don`t think anyones complain. I live in Sandyford and me and my mates always get in to Dundrum shopping centre and The green in like 10-15mins?
maybe they're making a profit because it's so damned expensive.
virtually every aspect of dublin's public transport system (or "plan") is incompetent. simple as that. I use it every day, and those defending it are only fooling themselves.
An interesting vid - I agree that it is expensive - but so is everything in Ireland. However, "Rome wasn't built in a day!" Neither was Luas - the two lines will be linked in a few year's time and extensions are already underway to both lines with more planned.
It doesn't pretend to be a metro system, but a minimum-cost example of what public transport could do for Dublin. It is a huge success and one of the few public transport systems *in Europe* to make an operating profit, somewhere c. €6-7m
This is total rubbish and not at all a fair or accurate comparison.
The LUAS is a tram system not a Metro. The Dart is the nearest thing that we have to a Metro. Here is a quote relating to London:
"London's mayor, Ken Livingstone, raised the cost of cash fares on the London Underground and the expanded bus network. The increases mean a single-stop tube journey in the central London zone 1 area now costs £4 in cash. A single zone trip on the buses is now £2 in cash"
Yeh we should really invest in our tram network (not) just leave it with the buses and yeah because right now Ireland is so great financially that we have excessive amounts of money to spend on public transport.

Take the light rail here in Phoenix, AZ, United States
$3.60 - All day, all buses and trains
$1.75 - One Way
Bus & trains uses the same tickets.
You guys should adopt the American way of fare collection on trains/buses

Actually Japan is the highest paid per capita in the world, Ireland isn't. You can be sure that their transport system isn't expensive.
Anyway the ticket prices don't reflect anything. If Dublin had a proper, integrated transport system we'd have no problem paying high ticket prices
And if Ireland is one of the highest paid per capita, wouldn't you expect an equally good transport system?

"In fairness Dublin seriously needs the metro to hurry up"
Dublin is too small to be in need of a metro.
Trams are all it needs . Multiple lines , not 2 like it has now (3rd world)
Building tram lines only cost a fraction of a massive metro costs .
