@CommanderC00L558 It is emotional, and it could also be seen as emo if you define emo along genre lines, where it's a subgenre of alternative/punk rock, with melodic guitars and emotional lyrics/vocals. Which this song definitely fits. But if you want to go with the "EMO IS GAY BLAHHH" angle, I can see where you're coming from too.
@SuperMelon1 It just so happens that I used the term "Faggot" not as a derogatory term, but in the sense that the person is immature and irrational. Not homosexual. In fact I wish I was gay.
@ggallinrules No it isn't dude. It's music. And in music those things mean nothing. He is still a human being like you, and breathes the same air. Don't mean shit if he is attracted to men, women, animals, insects...I don't care. The music is what matters.
@ggallinrules well, when this album went out no one didn't spoke about Huskers in gay context...this isn't important so much, just their music left..btw,i see your nickname, everythin' is clear X)))
This is Husker Du's greatest song. And fuck all of you who care about Bob being gay, do you think his lifestyle changes the creativity and art of the band because of so? Nope.
husker du wipe thier ass with nirvana. zen arcade, candy apple grey, warehouse, new day rising.... etc etc not to mention bob mould's solo output. nirvana?... pah!
Morgoth, they owe them thier career? thats a lil bit of a stretch... i'd say they were definitely an influence, among many others...like the melvins, fugazi, the wipers, flipper, the pixies, black flag and so on, they are all great bands that left their own mark just like nirvana did.
I don't know, didn't Nirvana sound awfully similar? When confronted with a statement by some idiotic European reporter about Nirvana being the first band to mix punk with melody, Krist Novoselic said something to the effect of "Hüsker Dü did it before we did." I look at Nirvana as Hüsker Dü II.
"Mum and Dad I'm sorry, Mum and Dad don't worry, I am not the son you wanted but what did you expect? I've made my world of happiness to combat your neglect."
That's the one band they are always compared to, because they're from the same area of the USA, and because one made it big while the other stayed as quite an underground band. Even in some of their rawer material like Flip Your Wig, you can hear similarities to MODERN R.E.M., let alone the older and less commercial band!
Anyway, aside from that, this is Husker Du's best song, absolutely brilliant.
Best Song on Zen Arcade, and that takes a lot of saying.

Cherish that which rocks you, discard the rest. Bob Mould has done some fantastic work through the years... and I, personally, applaud him.

I'm definitely going to get trashed for this, but... can anyone else see this as being the first "emo" song?

Nirvana owes their career to many bands, particularly the Pixies, since that's where they took most of their riffs from.
shadowself88 2 years ago
Both the Pixies and Nirvana were Hüsker Dü acolytes.
morgoth195 2 years ago
True, true. It doesn't matter, though. Point is that Hüsker Dü kicks ass.
shadowself88 2 years ago
Right, in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter. They were a great band who also happened to be very very influential.

man i gotta buy this album soon its killer!! huskers rule!! another great band i missed out on!!!!!!

Actually, R.E.M. are from Athens, Georgia, while Husker Du were from Minneapolis, Minnesota -- separated by approximately 1000 miles.

How embarrassing for me.

You might have been thinking of The Replacements, another great '80s band from Minneapolis.

indeed i was! i've got a copy of "let it be" which i should really listen to more.

excuse me, this band, on all of their albums, have lots of overlooked and truly amazing songs. This, from Zen Arcade, is one of them.
