The country's majority Sinhalese 70%,Tamil minority ca. 18% & the rest lived in peace though the Brits used the 'divide and rule' method for their benefit hence the minority Tamils had an upper hand in admin.Once the Brits left the Tamils demanded 50% of the power which was nullified by the Sinhalese rightly so. However, the Tamils continued to be among the top flight. The LTTE was a product of that 50% demand & ter.
