Jack, looks to me like the 79 Mustangs followed the lines of the Fairmont Futura models.. actually my first car was a 1978 Mustang II with the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder and the automatic transmission.. I'd have to prefer the Mustang II over this style but a lot of people dislike the little II's.. Lee Iacocca called it his "shining new pony" I do believe back in 1974!
@SippRider89 Hey, Zack! That's so true...this 79 was the Fox body which it shared with Fairmont and Futura models, so it came by the similarity honestly. Mustang II is a strange story...I looked at a new one when they came out in 74, but they struck me as expensive...wound up with a Camaro instead. Mustang II sold a lot because gas was in short supply, and they were quite sporty. Unfortunately, there seems to be almost no interest in restoring them. Thanks! :) Jack
@raconter1 thanks! That makes me feel better 2 of my friends dislike the fox body style and would rater have a Honda odyssey. But I don't listen to them a mustang is a mustang.
@chubmonster23 Glad to help! I think people either like or hate the Fox body...I myself like it! The Florida Highway Patrol used Mustang coupes of this era as patrol cars, and gave them a stealthy image, even though they were well marked as patrol cars! Thanks! :) Jack
My dad had one of these in high school and still does. It's been sitting in a garage for 20 years tough, and now me and him are restoring it. Yes, same exact color on the exterior, and interior. It doesn't have the cobra sign on the hood, no loafers, and is not Manuel. It is a 5.0 and has a v8.
@chubmonster23 I'm glad to hear you're starting restoration! I recommend going to local car shows and getting the local conversation about who's good at various things that might need doing! Nothing like a good father-son project for memories you'll have for a lifetime! Thanks! :) Jack
@bimjales Hey, Jim! I think that is an excellent idea! Never thought of it...may make me look a bit eccentric, but that's ok....I'll just chalk it up to my age! LOL! Thanks! :D Jack
@raconter1 Jack, that reminds me of story of Douglas MacArthur. At the beginning of the War the General used to always carry a swagger stick until a newspaper reported that it was a cane. When the General read that he never carried his swagger stick again. Over here when we get the intense heat of the afternoon sun it is not uncommon to see people carry an umbrella.
@cheddyrod Hey, Chester! I can see the Army mind set coming in here! To imagine a General in need of assistance to walk about...impossible! Perhaps the fact that President Roosevelt couldn't stand without assistance made him sensitive to the subject! I will simiply say I'm a recent arrival from a tropical land! :D Thanks! :D Jack
I like the red interior with white paint on yours, Jack, but I always think this style is the least Mustang-like of all the Mustangs, even the unpopular 'pony' Mustangs of the mid 70s. I just can't shake the similarity to the Ford family look of the Ford Escort hatchback. It's probably just an 80s thing where everything had to be styled with straight lines and rectangles. Good performer it may have been, but I prefer the bulges and curves of the earlier and later cars in appearance terms.
@rx6180 Hey, Mick! Yeah, it definitely bears a resemblance to the "family". The squarish styles look better on some cars than others..I think it favors larger cars more. The alternative would evidently been the Mazda sourced Probe...I think this would have been a disaster for Mustang. So Mustang survived the period....at least it wasn't subject to the tremendous variation that Thunderbird experienced! We had no four-door Mustang! :D Thanks! :D Jack
@KyphosisKiel Hey, Kiel! That cobra is really what makes the car what it is...and a good indication that Mustang was eventually going to get back to its performance roots! Thanks! :) Jack
@bisquik3006 Yeah, I think you could make that argument with cars produced at this time. Still reliant on carburetors, they really didn't have the technology to meet pollution regulations and still maintain driveability.
They were dark days for cars....but at least they had some nicely decorated ones...like this one..and don't forget, the Bandit's Trans-Am! Thanks! :) Jack
My dad's principle actually had one of these while he was in high school. I could only imagine.. Seems like these early Fox bodies are more rare than later models.. Certainly oozes late 70s, early 80s!
VERY NICE JACK..I LVE THE COBRA IN THE HOOD IN THIS CARS,BUT THR RIMS ARE NOT ORIGINAL..CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN JACK.

I have an idea for you. If you carry an umbrella, you could block the reflections when they are this bad. What do you think?
