Hi, i can't freeze tracks, because most of them are signed to a kick as a sidechain compression ( bass, sweeps etc ) is there any option how to freeze them with sidechain compression on them? thanks
Best tuts on the tube...hands down. This guy is bleeding-edge no Bullshit. Excellent, jumping on mailing list for sure. Only thing is managing freeze files and referencing them back to a project is a bit of a bitch, but i'm sure will be worked out in Live 9. Logic deletes the freeze files automatically, but flatten is so winning. ;)
Why do tracks with Compressors not freeze. I can never figure out that one.. I have to cut the comp freeze track and repaste on frozen track, but still a pain.. Thanks for your videos!
i think the solution here is to run things to bus channels. e.g., run your kicks into a bus channel and apply the compressor to the BUS channel, not the source audio (sampler, impulse, instrument, etc). this will allow you to freeze the audio but still apply the compressor (to the frozen audio which is going to a bus channel)
@DoctorIncredible Thanks for your reply! If i do that im gonna have a parallel compression which is not something that i want all the time. Abelton sometimes can be really stubborn..ughhh! Besides im having all sorts of issues with live being really flaky with my waves plugins.. so i have to resort to using Logic Pro now.

Vespers Production Bible numbers... what would that be... I have been turning words into notes using duodecimal numbers where each letter resembles the number in the alphabet, and by using 'letter % 12' it gets fit into one octave nicely. Rarely get a nice result though.
I'm confused as to what the standard protocol is for freezing your files to send audio out for mastering. Mostly what to do about send channels. How do you make everything play nice?
@RoboticusMusic Hey mate. You don't need to do this for mastering. For mastering you just send out a single stereo render of the master bus. The only reason to do this is to send your tune to someone else for collab or mixdown. Cheers!
@DJVespers I hear mastering engineers like individual tracks... but if I wanted to remder everything to audio to master everything as audio tracks so there are no variables, what do you do with the sends? Can they be rendered down to audio tracks?
@RoboticusMusic Hey mate. What you're talking about is not mastering. Mastering is only done on a "master" out. Any work done on an individual track/stem/bus level is called mixdown, or possibly component mastering. I highly recommend that you do your own mixdowns. If you don't feel they're good enough, get some coaching. Doing mixdowns is an essential skill of any producer. You can't freeze return tracks.
does this work with live 7? iv collected and saved all and had the option of which files to save but once saved i dont find the little folder with all the samples etc inside it? iv looked every where on my mac????
@9:15 seems like you are having the issue with whether Mac chooses to Copy or Move a file.. I noticed this as well. You can also click/drag then hold CMD and drop to always Move a file or click/drag and hold OPT + drop to always Copy a file. I noticed sometimes Mac gets confused with whether it is going to default Copy or default Move a file.
I have a question - so first off I have paid for all my synths and effects etc.
I have a project file from my old computer, everything collected and saved, but it is not recognizing the synths! Is there any way to tell ableton "HERE IS WHERE MY SYNTHS ARE FFS" so i can finish this project?
You dont get anywhere near enough recognition for what you are doing.. keep up the incredible vids man.
Great tutorial. How do I create a project folder? I have a few project folders, but for some reason most of my tracks are saved as .als files under "library". What am I doing wrong? Last week I tried to send my project to my friend, but all I found was the .als file...no sample folder or anything else. I did use collect all & save.
Fantastic tut, Vespers. Freeze / Flatten makes my life so much easier, thanks mate! Do you live right in the DT core? If so, did you happen to catch the riots first hand?
Hey there. I have a question similar to the topic of this video. I've made a couple of tracks that are ready to be mastered. I want to send each track to the recording studio at my school which uses Pro Tools 9HD (I think) when I have ableton. Is the best way to export all the tracks. Also exporting seems to be inconsistent when doing each track individually. Tips/hints? Appreciate it.
@yoshimitsu0408 Yeah, I'd just export everything down to stems or tracks. Ableton allows you to do this as a batch process in its export menu. Not sure what you mean about "inconsistent" though, you'll have to be more specific. Cheers!
@DJVespers Sorry, what I mean is that sometimes it only exports a fragment of the song like the first 6 seconds or so. Do you have to highlight the area you want exported? Cheers
Hi, thanks for all of these amazing tutorials, they're really helping me out!!!
I have a question. Say I have a synth track with Massive followed by a few Ableton native plug ins (EQ, Saturator etc...). I've frozen this track and sent the whole song to a friend of mine, who does not have massive. Thing is - he'd like to change the settings on the EQ, which means he has to unfreeze, but since he doesn't have massive he can't listen! Is there anyway to get around this in Ableton?
@sebcori Hey mate. Great question. Yes. Take the track and group it. Then take the EQ and any other Ableton effects he may want to tweak and put them on the group track instead. Then freeze the Massive track. He'll still be able to tweak the Ableton devices on the group. Cheers!
Awesome video! I will definitely have to check out drop box. I was just trying to do this on Thursday actually and couldn't find where it put the folder when you collect all and save. Searched on my computer just like you did and it didn't find it. I'll have to have a little more patience and hunt it down :)
heres a question i hope you can answer, is there any quick way within ableton that say you got an audio clip or a synth you already rended to audio and you want the end of the sample to shift down in pitch smoothly is there a way to do that you know of? i used to use fl studio and there was a dedicated main pitch knob you could automate for that effect but so far the only way i can do it is within synth parameters like massive or with a vst like madshifta which is not smooth at all, any help??
@zaboyification Yep, for sure you can do that. Double click on your audio clip and activate the envelopes section (the e button in the bottom left). Then select your transpose parameter from the menu in the envelopes section and draw in your automation with breakpoints or the pencil tool. Cheers!
@DJVespers These riots even made it to evening news here in the Netherlands but your point is not about the riots.
Aren't you the guy that teaches your students to lay down their tracks every once in a while, sleep over it or relax to empty their mind a bit? Guess what, watching your favorite sportsgame on televison can be a perfect way for that!
I assume you're not a prick, but sentencing artists as "waisting their time" when the're relaxing in front of TV is inconsequent and over the top.
@Drrolfski Relaxation time is great. I encourage everyone to do it. I don't think we should be spending time watching TV though. Your brain has more activity staring at a wall than a TV, and all the advertising is programing your subconscious. Plus, most TV is negative, violent or both. If you want to relax, get out in nature, take a yoga class, have an inspiring conversation with a friend. That's what I'm getting at. Cheers!
@DJVespers I hear you. I'm not that much of TV watcher myself and I agree there are good or better alternatives for relaxation but keep in mind this is all personal preference.
Condemning watching any TV at all is a pretty radical, if not exaggerating, point of view and certainly leads the discussion away from what this should be about: an excellent tutorial about making music, not some patriarchic rules about how not to live your life.
@Drrolfski Hey mate. I share a lot of things on this channel beyond just tutorials. Much of it is mindset and lifestyle. Take my advice and rationale only if you feel it fits for you, I'm not jammin it down your throat. All the best.
@DJVespers Fair enough, just a small suggestion then; try not to mix up your technical tutorials with lifestyle advice video's as these are not necessarily the same audience you are reaching out for.

BUSSING is a very very useful tool anyway which I have learned from other tuts... helps to organize things and makes mixdown simpler too.
