Listening to this makes me feel 25 again if just for four minutes! I remember my boys were little and would hide around the corner watching it because they were afraid of the bride skeleton. Boy how music can take you back to a place in time! GREAT SONG!
locaterobert, that is a very good question, Although the song went to number one. It was hardly played at all after it's chart run.
Probably because there were so many good songs in the 80's to choose from. I would agree with you, or what you are implying, in that it get's played all the time now. So people lose sight of the past.
The airplay it get's now would be the overated part. I wish they had played it as much then as they do now. Better late then never. The dj
I lost on jeopardy baby ooh. Our loves is in jeopardy baby ooh. I always thought he said I lost on jeopardy before Weird Al did it. Also why do people say this song is overated or underated?
MTV was a BLATANTLY racist (still is) channel and only started playing "Black" videos because of the huge cross-over success of Michael Jackson on the record charts.
If they had had it their way, NO Black artist would have EVER been given air time.
It was to be WHITE ROCK only in their minds. MTV sucks even more today.
BTW, MTV was on air a full 18 MONTHS before being FORCED to air Black artists.
If it weren't for CBS Records (I think) threatening to pull ALL their artists from MTV's rotation if they didn't also run their Black artists too, MTV would have never turned the corner.
All they had to do was dedicate an hour or so a day to R&B (even early Rap) but they couldn't bring their bigoted selves to even do that.
Prince, Michael, Rick James, Kool & The Gang, New Edition, Patrice Rushen, Stevie Wonder, Shalamar, Dazz Band, Evelyn "Champagne" King and others had hits that were popular (Pop by today's standards) among the white kids I went to junior high with and would've done fine on MTV at the time.
You are wrong. MTV played plenty of videos by black artists. What they did not play early on was RAP. That's what people started getting on them about, and they created "Yo MTV Raps" in response. But you go on believing what you want to believe. They played Top 40 hits. When black artists hit the Top 40, their videos got played. Rap was nowhere near the Top 40 until the 90s.
exactly thats what i wanted to say. You had your Lionel Richie, Cameo, Prince, Rick James. If they had a hit they were in. Rap didnt have hits until later.
No,YOU'RE wrong----I started watching MTV around 1984, and the only black artists they played on a regular basis were Michael Jackson & Prince, period. I read in one of the first books on MTV that even the head of MTV at the time, Robert Pittman, claimed that white kids only wanted to watch rock 'n roll artists (which is funny considering that most of rock 'n roll's main innovators were black) and that black music wasn't rock 'n roll (yeah, right). MTV Raps only went on the air after he left MTV.
Odd, considering I have Jimi on VHS tape on MTV playing Purple Haze in black & white.
Those who watched MTV from the beginning know better. Also few artists did videos at the time. Even Metallica didn't have a video until 1988 or 89.
If you are so strident in your move for equality- demand they actually have white folks on now. Ever since Yo MTV Raps 21 yrs ago..... they have been pushed further and further out.
Unless..... you don't like equal protection of standards.
Firstly, I was watching MTV when it FIRST aired. Not the actual moment but the first week it started. A white kid in my neighborhood actually wanted to sell me his bike because "...I don't need my bike, I've got MTV!" (he ACTUALLY said that).
So I'm not talking about the Metallica years. I'm talking about the first two years when it was exclusively WHITE/ROCK.
Sure, they MIGHT have done a Jimi here and there but rarely.
Because that was what was growing and gaining market at the time. 1981 was basically the start of the California Rock/metal scene. When that died out Grunge and rap took over.
It's what sold & was popular. Personally Music has no color -It's just this time it was visual.
Like I said in a previous comment, there were plenty of Black artists who had music with "cross-over" appeal at that time (1981-1982) but MTV flat REFUSED to air them.
Today it's more economical decisions. Back then, it was PURELY about race/culture and it was unbelieveably blatant.
In typical fashion, bigoted minds didn't turn the corner until their money got messed with or they could make an extra dollar. *smh*

I love this stuff. I'm so happy that there are still people who like this kind of music that don't listen to the music of today. All it is is a bunch of people with their pants falling down blubbering about raping and beating women and it just disgusts me. Thank goodness common sense is still alive!

I love this stuff. I'm so happy that there are still people who like this kind of music that don't listen to the music of today. All it is is a bunch of people with their pants falling down blubbering about raping and beating women and it just disgusts me. Thank goodness common sense is still alive!
