Haha well, perhaps it is because we speak UK English over here, which probably is a little different from US English! :) There are different kinds of nouns though, and some of them are meant to be used with quantifiers and others aren't. Tables and phones are referring to specific things, whereas alliteration is used here as an identity, or a class of several objects. (At least that's what the OED says!)
