Hooky playing a mean lead guitar! And Gillian's Arp Quadra as the bass-line. Just shows how much they fooled around with the line-up to get the sound in their heads.
Love NO, but Barney's vocals definitely not on par with Ian when they were in JD. However, Barney really helped to instill the NO sound and I love this band so much. Pity they split, just like another of my favourites now, REM.
ok. i ll be 40 in five days. I liked this band when I was a kid, and I just listened to this song 3 times. Im a big Radiohead fan and this is where they started. This show is absolutely amazing and beautifull.
At this stage Barney had no idea what his 'natural' vocal style would be, which was sorted out by the time of recording PC&L. If he based his style on anyone at this point, I would say Josef K's Paul Haig. An interesting role model!
As Hooky would say, "******g hell!" Just when you think there are no more undiscovered bootlegs to come out, first two previously unheard JD concert audios are unearthed (last year), then the 1981 Glastonbury stuff appears on YouTube, and now this TV appearance in HQ! (Actually this was uploaded first, but..) There's only ever been a very low-qual audio of this show widely available, until now. Where did you find it? Good stuff, I prefer NO in this early phase of their development.
Love the album Movement and this is definitely a stand out track. In my own way, I am glad New Order found more of their own style as on this album, they were trying to convey Joy Division's more experimental side like Isolation. Also think that Bernie struggles with the vocals and tries to sound too much like Ian (Curtis) , but in the end it is a good 'bridge' between Joy Division and what New Order would later craft.
@ELECTRONICTORTELLINI The drum pattern here isn't very hard to copy, but the brilliance of Morris is that every single Joy Division and early New Order song can be recognised immediately by it's unique drum riff - I can't think of another band who did this....... plus he's very funny in interview.
Probably one of the best videos of that special period of the band. Have you seen joesoap's version of Chosen Time from the riverside studios - that's great too.
to me this is house music... New Order just didnt know it yet.. fuck they were so far ahead of their time.. this is amazing!
