this is so heart breakingly beautiful... astounding,, athletic,, amazing,, unmatched,, a greatful thanks to FFL for loading this astonishing piece of art... it lives forever and ever....
Hey, sublime and beautiful.. such elegance, dancingwithotters is right, Fred and Ginger achieved immortality in this clip.. very strenuous dancing for her especially, it must've been so intense filming these dance numbers under studio lights.
Fred Astaire incidentally was Cole Porter's favourite singer, for though he didn't have a big voice he sang all the notes as written and had perfect diction so you can hear every syllable perfectly even now almost 80 years on.. now that's greatness! Px :)
I love watching this, and all their other dances. It brings tears to my eyes. Their movements are so eloquent and their costumes are just divine! And the music is ever so quaint. It's just romantic, lovely and passionate...picturesque! You really can't get any better than this.
That magnificent dress that Ginger Rogers is wearing here deserved an Oscar. I think it may be the most beautiful dress I ever saw. And it is ideal for this dance. Irving Berlin's music is sheer bliss.
@chevychase i definitely agree. did you know that ginger rogers designed it herself? also, fred astaire hated it because the little feathery things kept getting stuck to his tuxedo. :)
Just magic. Fred and Ginger didn't invent social dancing, of course, but they made dancing with a partner so attractive, that literally millions of couples filled the 1930s dance palaces, all over the country. And...Since the depression made most people poor... they literally created their own entertainment. Amazing times.
And let's not forget the amount of hard work and effort that goes into making movies like this. In Ginger's autobiography, she explains how her feet sometimes started bleeding from rehearsals and doing take after take. Musicals these days don't have extraordinary dance sequences that require alot of work. Anyone can line dance or do Hip-Hop. But it takes training to learn Tap Dance, and other challenging dances like Ballroom and Acrobatic Dance
And this is an ACTUAL musical, not like that High School Musical crap and everything else that's out these days. This movie has style, grace, elegance, a storyline, wonderful actors, and beautiful music.
@jcerv :) I just learned to and we recently had our ballroom dancing social and I had to teach half the boys there how to actually dance the steps. :)
These were droll little flicks with forgettable plots but Oh- the music and Oh the dancing. When I watch them dnce and listen to those wonderful tunes, the sun comes out and I can't help smiling. And, shedding a tear that it will never come again. That such sophistication, charm, talent and beauty is lost forever, except in these woonderful old flicks.
Thanks so much for posting this. If we're still here as a species, people will watch this 100 years from now with the same love.
ginger rogers loved that dress, but Fred hated it b/c the feathers flew all over the place. But she insisted on wearing it. So he called her "feathers" after that. ( :
I used to love watching this movie at my grandpa's house when I was a kid, and I just got chills watching it again. What a beautiful time in film. True entertainment!
@LadODell Every ballroom dancing practice that I have (i'm doing ballroom dancing for the school social) I always imagine myself floating with a boy like they did. They had some spark on the dance floor. See, nowadays the dance floor is a horrible cheap flat bit of board that people bounce up and down on, but then it was a beautifully polished marble or stone floor. I wish that we still had that era. :(
Back when dancing was something couples did that was special. Watching Fred and Ginger they don't dance they seem to float on the floor. This is a special kind of magic we seem to have lost. Too bad the young people of today do not know this knid of magic. They really don't know what they are missing.
Such a joy to watch! Grace and power; elegance and discipline. Love her gown!
When I was a teenage girl, I used to think that Fred Astaire was a "fuddy-duddy", but now that I'm a little older and wiser, I've realized that men who can dance like THIS, also have stamina in other areas....!
Thanks for posting! Top Hat is an entertaining movie, by the way.
I was heartbroken watching this knowing that these two individuals have long since passed away. But then, are they really dead? Even now, decades later, we're still marvelling at the grace and poise of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
They dance themselves towards immortality it seems.
Gone are the days of women and men having class or even knowing what it is. pure Grace and elegance, and what romance should be like today *sighs* I still swoon when I watch this man dance with Ginger...
I love beautiful dancing like this, not this disgusting modern stuff that has girls in slutty little dresses that reveal too much. This is ACTUAL dancing. I hate that it isn't as popular as it was in 1930's and that era though.
@zoe1796 this is just amazing and just so welll put together..u canb tell teh artists acually CARED about teh music..an dthis is coming from a guy with long hair who likes rock and heavy metal music...
@zoe1796 You said it! I'm making sure my son knows how to dance like this. He's only 14 but I know one day he'll be so glad he learned. There is actual beauty and art in this!
@zoe1796 don't forget the guys who only know how to stand there and think it appropriate to hold a girl's ass in their hands or walk in a circle and call it "slow dancing." we need a dancing revival! :)
Watching these stars dancing, I can't help but smile. Funny thing is I don't realize I am until later LOL.
