  • 14 ignorant peeps have no idea what real rock and roll was or is and it's sad, the was 1 of the best rock songs ever on burt's shows!!

  • Thats what I'm talking about "bitch".

  • Nice haircut Mr. Weems, 1985 is calling!!!

  • A Masterpiece !

  • that's a real fuckin great perfomance

  • This and free ride and two songs by korn come to rock band 3 tue freak on a leash is one of them, this is the song that will have the pro guitar up grade.

  • Oh hell yeah!!!

  • Chuck Ruff was a great drummer.

  • That's Floyd Radford on guitar, folks.

  • @Guidotoons101 Actually, that's Jerry Weems on the SG - he played guitar in Edgar's band for a spell after Ronnie Montrose split.

  • turn edgar up more!!! lol

  • Chuck Ruff is amazing while Dan Hartman kicks ass.

    UGottaListen2B4UDie.

  • i dont think it was broadcast like this

  • frickin tight

  • amazing video, thanks

  • Edgar thought music was a banquet. I love all of them for making us feel so good about being teenagers back then. Rock on gnarly, cool musical dudes. Rock on!

  • Music in fact-does suck and out loud as evidenced by practically every 'awards' show.Country music is not even country-just put a fiddle or pedal steel in and I guess one can call it such. There's just no good music in the top forty or otherwise.Case closed.

  • @mattthecat03 Awards shows aren't giving awards to what is the best - they are giving awards to whatever the mass media tells you what you should like. Don't let the mass media ruin your enjoyment of music.

  • It's Alive!!

  • LOL Guy on guitar looks like he's outta time... like he's better suited for the 90's-2000's

  • HS Prom, it was a great song and a great time in the 70's

  • That was freakin' awesome!

  • Stick that in your pipe and smoke it! Bad as hell!

  • @kellyjdrummer1 Cant remember the last time I saw a musician on stage play just about every lead instrument in a song,He rocked the synth bass, horns, feedback amp and guitar(not played on this song but he does usually play one live)and not only can he play them,He plays them very well.

  • Instrumental pre satriani and vai. you know this was an influence. Check out Hocus Pocus by Focus. Great stuff. This was on radio. Truely sick at the 530 mark. the synth and big chords! Give me acid! This is PROG.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. Being the time it was and the state of mind we were all in, I did not know if this was real or imagined. Thanks.

  • That was probably one the best live performances ever on TMS.That lead guitar player was on top of his game that night.

  • Fantastic!!!!!

  • Is there anything that Edgar Winter CAN'T play? AMAZING TALENT!

  • Damn.....Edgar Winter was way ahead of his time...I love everyones comments about how music of today is crap that's crammed down our throats in order to line the pockets of record execs.....sad the road music has turned down..thank god we will always have the classics!!!!! p.s....I was born way after this was popular...stuff my mom and dad listened too. So there are young people with taste...lol

  • Miss ya brother Chuck - Godspeed

  • Notice how The Midnight Special gave Edgar Winters 9 minutes to play the song AND Improvise.

A music show today would give him 3 minutes to play the song, so that they could jam in as many performers as possible for more advertising dollars.

  • I didn't realize Uncle Jessie played guitar for Edgar Winter...

  • @CamelToeRodeo well why wouldn't Uncle Jesse's rock star side of his character be actually based off of REAL. fucking. rock. stars.

  • 62 yrs old still love this

  • wow.

  • I saw this video it was in June 1973 when it air'd on The Midnight Special......

  • the audience claps like 7 times throughout song thinking it's over

  • @troganhourse i would be kind of mad if it did

  • They are applauding the solos. A lot , if not all of the applause is canned.

  • Marilyn Manson's cousin, that has the talent of the family.

  • How artists of today can't even come close to producing music such as this. The peace ever made which contains no vocals.

  • This is from Chuck Ruff-"I ended up getting the new guitar player into the band. A friend of mine from high school, Jerry Weems. He was a really good guitar player and a really good singer. He recently passed away from liver failure. Rick was producing us and kinda playing guitar with us once in a while. It was a weird situation. We did a taping of 'The Midnight Special.' We played 'Frankenstein' with Jerry, whose hair was really short.

  • Its Ronnie Montrose on Guitar !!

  • Comment removed

  • @lisbonstudio It's Jerry Weems on guitar!!! Have a look at the video" bonaroo doobie brothers live 1976" to see another clip of him. I have spelt his name right this time.

  • Dan Hartman Bass, Chuck Ruff drumes!! I don't recognise the guitar player?

  • @johnnyw12 I think it's Gerry Weems on guitar.

  • I thought at 6:49 he was going to take a dump on his keyboard! Now that would have been something to see!

  • And not a half bad alto sax player - I forgot how much I like this song.

  • This will always be my very first "favourite song" in my whole life! I always told my mom I like this song every time it came on the radio (KJRB AM in Spokane) when I was 3 years old. My earliest memories.

  • What an awesome music trip... I was able to click suggestions from this video through Journey, Dio, As I lay Dying, Nightwish, Dragonforce, Tyr, all the way to Bathory and back thought In flames, At the Gates, ELP, Alice Cooper all the way back to this same video and I loved every song along the way!

  • I know the poster didn't include the "visual effects" - Midnight Special was especially cheesy back in the day, but I would be dishonest if I said that it wasn't distracting. Nonetheless, I think I just had a 10-minute orgasm. Holy SHEEYIT!!!

  • oh my.

  • I come here to hear some good music, and I walk away stoned. That's Edgar for ya!

  • Fuck yeah!!!

  • I think that's Dan Hartman playing bass; he was a native of Harrisburg, PA, near where I live.

  • @JNDGuitarman

    Dan Hartman for sure.

  • I think that is Chuck Ruff on drums....yes?

  • I think that is Chuck Ruff on rums....yes?

  • For the three of you who don't know it already, that's a young Ronnie Montrose on the guitar.

  • This is possibly the raddest live performance I've ever seen in my life!!!!!!

  • ROCK AND ROLL BABY!

  • He was an amazing musician .

  • THANK YOU Mr. Moog

  • Dan Hartman on bass

  • Me encantó ver esta la colección ,muy buenos clásicos

  • This was way before MTV, yet today what is supposedly "music television" is hours of reality TV garbage. Thanks for posting this!

  • @BradiKal61 I am pretty sure that the older generations considered this garbage when it came out.. it comes down to opinon

  • @k1ngmp No way. People recognized this was the shit back then, and maybe older generations didn't like it. But I'm young and I'm digging this a hell of a lot more than any of the garbage out in the media today. It's all uncreative, unoriginal, mass produced for profit as opposed to self-expression. Don't even compare this to the garbage of today

  • @Go0Go0Barabajagal Amen!

I watched this when originally aired back in '73, and record companies signed people with talent, now they just sign teen idols that they know will rake them in a lot of money.

  • @Go0Go0Barabajagal That's your opinion in the end I am right and you're just expressing your opinion. sorry for the late reply

  • @k1ngmp ha oh and so you recognize that i'm voicing my opinion, but you immediately discount it and say only yours could be right. Music today sucks, that's not an opinion, that's a fact. Especially when you compare it to stuff like this made 30 years ago when real musicians ruled the music industry.

  • @Go0Go0Barabajagal That "fact" is incorrect. A large portion of the music released today does in fact suck, but if you think all music released today sucks, you just aren't looking for the good music (hint: it's not in the top 40).

  • @JimBobWhoRocks yeah but thats my point. The top 40 of 30 years ago used to actually have some amazing musicianship included. Today you have to go searching for good music because the mainstream has become entirely dominated by profit and conformity over creativity. Back then good bands were popular and listening to the radio didnt make you want to pull a van goh and cut off your ears

  • @Go0Go0Barabajagal Eh, I'll have to take your word for it. I was born in the 90s, so I don't remember a time where the good music was shoved in my face. All I know is what my dad has told me, which was that the music on the radio 30 years ago (that's 1981, quite a few years after this video) was also mostly garbage.

  • @Go0Go0Barabajagal You are wrong. I don't know why you reply with your own opinion stating that it is a fact when obviously its just your opinion. You're stupid that's all i have to say, any act of me replying to you just makes me seem as pathetic as you.

  • @k1ngmp No, what makes you pathetic isn't commenting, it's commenting and just calling someone stupid and wrong without backing it up with any kind of relevant or worthwhile point. But you're clearly to inept to articulate any kind of original thinking, which is probably why you don't think today's music sucks compared to 30 years ago, because you can't appreciate unique and creative thinking, which does not exist in todays music scene. You're only pathetic one here, you foolish child.

  • Please add more videos

  • Me encantó...

  • Shane, you are my HERO! Thanks for these vids! Gratitude.

  • Back then, when the bass player soloed, the camera would look at the guitar player.

  • Great to have these guys as neighbors in Beaumont Texas, which is where my little brother was born, we lived right behind you in the red rancher behind the bamboo, the mcmahans

  • That was almost as good as listening to Justin Bieber.................

  • @blabblab1212 what the hell is a Bieber ?

  • @zorozornes ShitSZass = BEIBERdeadasspoop 10-4

  • would someone from Eigenharp put on into his hands. Talk about a new level of music.

  • @dannydutchboy2011 LP titled "They Only Come Out at Night"

  • this band is way ahead of its time!! UNBELIEVABLE !!! i did not know he played sax too! where is rick derringer?

  • WHOA :O

  • What I've noticed recently is that instrumental tunes like this are boxed up and played on techno stations; Moreover, we don't hear about instrumental tunes going to number one on The Billboard Pop Charts these days. It's sad that's going on. Wonder why that is.

  • I saw Winter along with Ringo and the All Starr Band today.

It's amazing how one guy can be so energetic.

  • truly a jamm session & every friday night the midnight special had live sessions & don kirshners rock concert.....no lipp syncing

  • i love how they show the guitar player when the bass player is soloing. bass solos arent very expected i guess

  • 10 people with their heads up their their lady gaga.

  • What a killer performance! Imagine how the minds blew in the audience of 1973! LOL This is great!

  • This was some cool innovative shit way way,I'm talkin way fuckin way ahead of it's time. Respect 2 Edgar!

  • That IS Jerry Weems on guitar. Did a little research and found out that Chuck Ruff recommended him after Ronnie Montrose left. Jerry has since passed away of liver failure. That's also Dan Hartman (I believe) on bass.

  • @TheJman2600 yes, that IS Jerry Weems.

  • BURT REALLY COULDA LEFT OUT THE FAKE APPLAUSE IN THE KEY SPOTS OF THE SONG...

  • who's the dumb fuck who altered the original video and put his punk ass in...lame ass trick...

  • roll the doob an Kick back for this Masterpiece\

  • Alot of effects like those were done back because they figured we were doing LSD. This song was amazing on the new quadriphonic systems that were new then. Hearing the effects circling around your cars 4 speakers was killer

  • I CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME

  • @mysmallballs dude it was a joke relax would ya

  • @mysmallballs I am a drummer as well since 1977, and you are right. Now way stoned. NO fricking way possible. I tried it while playing the song "footloose" once at a New Years eve party What a train wreck!

  • 1:27 Look at him, he's literally fucking his keyboard--if that's not a sign of his genius, nothing is.

  • Why isn't there any music like this around these days--short answer is musical acts aren't musicians now. The chance of someone mastering keyboards, percussion and the alto saxophone plus composition and showmanship and putting it into a live piece like this is almost inconceivable today.

  • Comment removed

  • why cant music be this good today?

  • @epicseeds I thought the same thing you just posted when I see movies from the same time.

  • Serious stuff!!

  • anyone else see how stoned the drummer is lmao love it

  • Sh*t man - I forgot how amazing this mother fuck*er was.

Truely a freak genius... what an unreal peice of music.

Thank you for posting this mate.

  • Forgot a source. Wikipedia: Search Keytar.

  • It isn't a keytar people. That is a standard keyboard with shoulder straps. Remember: Keytars have a neck. That doesn't.

  • You have just witnessed a Keytar orgasm 1:17-2:00.. Amazing!

  • Amazing performance. is that a keytar?

  • awsome

  • 138,786 people just witnessed perfection...

  • So glad I was there for this most creative era of rock...these guys GFR & later Steely Dan.....the list goes on & on..Thanks shanecombs1993 for posting this !

  • A JAW "FUCKING" DROPPING PERFORMANCE! GODDAMNED!

  • That was absolutely fan-fucking-tastic! The radio doesn't do this song any justice! It's a must see! That truly was "Frankenstein" and did create a monster of a performance!

  • OGWT as the best version live of this classic tune

  • I played a shortened band version of this on alto saxophone! It's really fun to play!

  • Who's that on guitar?

  • @littledavearrival I'm about 99% sure it's Ronnie Montrose.

  • @duhdamac I'm 100% sure it's Ronnie Montrose :)

  • @littledavearrival Jerry Weems he was a great session player but died early on. He had style as you can plainly see.

  • You can SO imagine frankenstein coming to life.

  • Ladies & gentlemen, this is how you put on a show!

  • Chuck Ruff...Rockin'

  • Absolutely stunning. One of the most underrated people of his time, Edgar Winter is one of a kind and still is. I can't say enough. Edgar, thanks.

  • I used to listed to this as a child. My mom would put on this record to help me go to sleep.

    \m/

  • Great performance!

To all the nostalgia trippers talking about people don't make good music anymore, I say there is great music in every generation, you just have to look harder than TV and the radio.

  • Midnight Special was awesome......what happened to those days??

  • Man, where did these guys come from?!!!!!!!!!!! This one of the best live performances I've ever seen!!!!!!!!

  • WHERE'D HE GET A FUCKIN SYNTH KEYTAR IN '73??!!

  • @BuyBenco I'll betchyu he took a standard keyboard, put a couple screws into each side and attached a strap. I haven't analyzed his performance enough to see if an electric cord was attached or if it was really battery powered, but I would think either was available back in '73??

  • @sbdude101 Oh yeah it is standard keyboard, but it has a synth sound and without all the oscillator soundboxes and extra shit and battery powered in 73?!

  • @BuyBenco

    Here is the answer:

Edgar Winter is using a remote controlled Keyboard that is connected to a big, ARP2600 Synthesizer.

You can see him play with the knobs of that ARP @ 6:00

The ARP is where the Oscillators and Filters are stored.

    I hope that helps

~Someone who studies and preforms with Synthesizers.

  • @PinkFloydGuitarist Aw thanks man that's cool

  • CHUCK THE FFFUCKING RUFF man!!!! I want this song played at my funeral. Whos that on bass?? He's rockin out!!!!

  • Edgar Winter: Hendrix on the keyboard!

  • Absolutely fucking incredible

  • THIS ROCKS.

  • I watched ALIVE last night in São Paulo, Brazil. AWESOME! Edgar still rocks. He looks like a kid. And he's got a new bass player, a black guy, he is fantastic.
