im pretty sure ive mentioned that before reminds me when youve had a big night and one of your mates says to you the next day that you were so smashed that you kept goin over the same conversation haha
A song that tells a story. The Hold Steady's songs are not told in a vacuum - they interweave with other songs in past and current albums (especially in Separation Sunday) to create characters that reappear and progress (or regress).
Imagine a novel where each chapter is a self-contained short story, but finds ways to connect with other stories. That's how Craig Finn writes, so "it's a song" doesn't quite cut it for The Hold Steady.
youre 'novel' analogy is perfect. one of my friends asked me why he always repeated shit from other songs and "why he cant come up with new lines." because its a story. not a line. and the story doesnt end with the song. AND it lets you know who actually listens to the music to know what/who hes talking about. good shit.
Why is he being voted down? What Craig Finn does with his songs is true - drugs and religion are often used in the same context with the same analogies.
If you don't support it, whatever, but voting down the comment is retarded. It's just plain fact.
@loganrapp I'd disagree with that. I'm pretty certain that Craig is a practicing Catholic. That's what I've gathered from his lyrics and interviews anyway.
does it bother anybody else that he improvises the lyrical rhythm? I don't know, I just don't like the was he does the songs live. the instrumentals are epic, but I just wish he would sing the songs the way they sound on CD, instead of pulling this shatner-esque ranting bullshit.
yeah man...I see where you're coming from but I think its interesting. I think its good that they're a band that doesn't play each song the exact same time every night...No hard feelings, I hate arguing over the internet

And it seemed like a simple place to score. Then some old lady came to the door and said Mckenzie Phillips doesn't live here anymore.

thx rhcp obv u like the chili peppers how do u feel about craig finn's comment regarding them??
do72490 3 years ago
the reason he brings that shit onstage is because he is a badass don't u feel cooler when you are holding a guitar
do72490 3 years ago 6
Amazing comment. Candidate for best comment ever, on the entire youtube machine.
Additionally, he plays his guitar a lot in other songs.
rhcp0109 3 years ago
love the song, love the band, but seriously, why does craig finn even bother bringing a guitar on stage if he never plays it?
tmac0154 3 years ago
Does anyone know where I can find a guitar tab for this song?

Dude these guys rock! He reminds me of Henry Rolans a lot. Does anyone know if they are Christians or just dissin on Christianity?
tomata182 4 years ago
They're definitely not active Christians, I can tell you that. Craig's stories generally involve drug use and religion as interchangeable.
