What was her last name? Are there any skating clips of her You Tube? You are thinking of another Elena coz the Elena that I am thinking of did skate at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
Elena Sokolova? Nicknamed Cupcake by Dick button was young and cute in Nagano 1998, wasn't in the Russian team again until 2003 worlds where she won the silver medal. Also won silver at Europeans that year, had a disaster in Turin 2006 Olympics, but bounced back with a 4th place at worlds that year. Also wet her spankys inbetween and has since retired. Never managed to find a deep edge. C'est la vie.
That is probably her as she was real cute and short.I do have it on tape so I need to go back and look at my tapes from Turin,if I can find them?Scott Hamilton just loved her.
Whatever happened to the cute little Russian gal Elena that skated in the Salt Lake City games and I think was from the Ukraine.Scott Hamilton loved her jumps.
I agree with all of those except 5.5 for required elements for Kwan is way too high. Her fall on the double axel is a .4 deduction and there is no way her base mark for that program with a weak and wobbly triple lutz combo and a triple toe as her optional jump should have been a 5.9. Other than that about right.
@pooguy77 Rechnio - touched down with the free foot on the Lutz, bad Layback spin, didn't hold a single Spiral position for more than a second, not a good combination spin, and not a good ending to the program. It really wasn't that good, although NONE of SPs from the Ladies at 99 Worlds were great:
I agree, the Laidback could have been better, and average combo spin. But her D.axle was one of the best of the competition, and the incredible speed, control, and ice coverage made up for some of her weaker elements.
This still hurts my heart! :( SO good. Anna Rechnio was so much better than her results showed. What a fine skater...she was ALethic and grecful....and even better balance of the two than Ito. No one has ever combined the two quite like Anna.
This was the 2nd best short program in the event after Butyrskaya. It was a disgrace she was placed 6th below Kwan with a fall, below sloppy Gusmeroli, and immature Soldatova, and Malinina with a turn out of her combo.
Brilliant! Who skates nowadays with such speed and smoothness?

completely ROBBED! Ridiculous...deserved to be 2nd in the short and should have also been higher in the long- 4th at least- 3rd overall!
Rechnio was robbed the year before too...had the judges just kept her ahead of Huberts crappy free (like she deserved) she'd have got the bronze!
Iwantvoids 4 years ago 13
She was placed only 6th for that? What a performance with beautiful flow and wonderful skating.
kwillyau 4 years ago 4
Seriously, how did the judges figure that SOLDATOVA, Kwan with a fall and Malinina with a stepout were better than THAT!? Stupid results
Iwantvoids 4 years ago 17
For the jumps, flow, speed and amazing EDGES (the best I've ever seen live) his should have won the short! ROBBED!
