We lost 60 birds in the last month to weasels. Nearly our entire 2012 pullet replacer flock. 43 in one day. That really kills the wholesale end of our egg business and cost us thousands. We don't find them cute.
@victoryfarm Sorry to hear about your loss. Why don't you take a look at a couple of my videos..perhaps it might give you some ideas on how to better house your chickens. Free-ranging is great but it doesn't come without some risks.
i wanna keep him/her! he looks like my ferret's cousin! LOL i wanna keep him I WANNA KEEP HIM!!! anyways...for people who think hes cute watch my older vids of my ferrets!!!
i absolutely hate weasels, they're so small and skinny that they can come in a coop at night time and kill off every chicken you have, i hate em, even as pets they are stinky and gross, they just suck, at least chickens give eggs
Wow.. If you think about it, the weasel is among one of the most ingenious killers out there.. So cute and innocent looking.. But then it rips your throat apart :-/
@RedEyedMustelid it's a stoat, weasels don't have the black tip on their tail and are smaller than stoats. Ermine is another name for a stoat but it's not the same animal as a weasel.
i had one of these little fuckers get in my coop 3 times and probably killed 50-60 birds within a week while i was on vaction. I got back and they were all piled on top of eachother dead. Some were blood drained, others eaten, and others with thir head bitten off. He never came back again like the little coward he is.
@portugal5698 Same thing happen to us, we found many dead with blood drained and heads gone. Upset me because they were not at least eaten. I can see if an animal is going to kill because they are hungry if they at least eat the animal they kill but to just kill and drain the blood and take the head. Must be something in the blood and heads they like. We ended up getting rid of all ours because this happen several times. Just when they would be old enough to start to lay.
Wow. Calm down people. This is what happens in nature everyday so don't freak out about a chicken, it's not like we don't kill them all the time for food.
@edblock A weasel got our two 6-year-old pet chickens last night. Same thing with one decapitated. It covered both of them with some straw before it took off. They've been in the same coop for all their lives, and I hadn't ever seen evidence of weasels -- there's lots of tree squirrels around, too. I guess that's going to change. Anyway, the coop would have protected them but for a small strip at the top that only had chain link fencing -- plenty big for a weasel.
@edblock this all because of those dam PETA people who take things to far and break into fur factories and let all these things loose and they end up killing our hard raised birds. If these PETA people love animals so much, they should just stay put at home because by releasing these things, they are costing our animals and pets their lives.
I am afraid one of these little bugger is killing my chickens I can't see how anything else could get in my coop there are not holes big enough for even a possum.
make sure you fortify the BOTTOMS of WALLS in your coop, the way the weasel got in to mine was by digging UNDERNEATH one of the coop walls.. i hadnt really even considered the possibility.. i just concentrated on making all of the chicken wire taught,.. next time, my coop will be weasel-proof.
Easy meal. I don't blame it. I would have done the same thing is finding food was uncertain and you extend almost more energy into getting wild prey as you do eating it.

Always raises such an existential dilemma for me, the matter of "cute". If weasels were ugly creatures, they'd probably be nearing extinction by now.
I wonder if you can classify being cute so as to incur human sympathy a survival strategy?

I'm thinking it's a female long-tailed weasel... ermine, however, are also known as least weasels... so yeah, a weasel!

next to shrews these guys are high octane mammals. they need to eat and eat often. thus they will kill more than they can eat if given the chance.
like cats they eat nothing but flesh.

its surprising that weasels are carnivores from there looks they seem harmless!
