There are basically too types of Emo. There is pop emo which is what groups like Alesana and Hawthorne Heights are which get a lot of criticism. And then their is raw emo such as Thursday, Dashboard Confessional and meywithoutYou which are critically aclaimed because they transcend genres. Alesana will always be known as Emo while Thursday is defined trough many genres(and Thursday is vastly superior. Sorry but it's the truth).

Emo pop bands are those like All Time Low, Mayday Parade, Spill Canvass, and not only emo pop, but electronic emo, which give examples like I Set My Friends On Fire, Attack Attack, etc. Dashboard is no damn emo. They are alternative, though their lyrics are emotional doesnt mean their genre is emo.
