  • incredible

  • each entrance, each release, each dissonance, perfectly in tune and perfect diction. I only wish to sing this piece <3

  • 1:47 love that low bass noteee!

  • Comment removed

  • This guy is amazing! The lyrics are such a different kind of poetry to me. When it comes to night or water this guy knows EXACTLY how to describe it! So perfectly mesmerizing and smooth. So clean

  • My chamber singers group is singing this for spring concert. SO AWESOME!

  • Whoa........ YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME! THAT WAS THE MOST COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD.....

  • The overtones in this piece are just mesmerizing. They give me chills everytime. Eric Whitacre speaks true music.

  • Abby - Of course you can. Whenever you do it though, try to make it seamless when you drop out and come back in. Good luck!

  • Kingdom Hearts III had better have a theme like this for their final level!

  • dislikes? smh

  • @tonidavis1 dislikes? smd

  • this might be a stupid question: are we allowed to stagger breathe on held out notes if we can't make it all the way?

  • Omg!! I can't wait for virtual choir 3!! This song makes me want to cry every time I hear it.

  • So infinitely excited for Virtual Choir 3!!!

  • VC 3 is going to be unbelievably ridiculously amazingly insanely epic beyond the normal level of epicness.

  • I sang all of the top notes for bass in my vc3 vid

  • You guys should agree upon the fact that Ronald Staheli understands better The works of Eric Whitacre than any conductor, even Eric himself.

  • -3

  • I cannot wait for VC3! This is the first song i heard by eric whitacre and i fell in love-3

  • So excited for Virtual Choir 3...doing Tenor, but maybe I should do soprano since I can hit the A flat in my falsetto HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA. I can go up to a D in falsetto is that sad? I don't think so....okay maybe a bit.

  • @pandasontherocks It's not sad. I can do the same thing in my chest. (A high D, right?)

  • @Konnorshi yeah, D6 haha (the high D above soprano C).

  • Oh I'm so excited for VC3! Now, which part to sing...

  • I'm so excited to do this....this will be my first time participating in Virtual Choir, and it's going to be amazing!!!

  • @waitekid101 Same here! Happy Recording!

  • oh yeah, tenor one is gonna be fun :D

  • Beast of a tenor part there guys! That's got to be fun!

  • This is a beautiful video, btw.

  • VIRTUAL CHOIR 3 BABY! WOO!

  • @Icyveins906 Apparently not because it's the song that was chosen. :D

  • @DC11961 It will be interesting to see if this new tech can make all of this synch up. It was certainly a near impossibility with the tech we had 3 years ago. IDK, but we shall see.

  • So beautiful. Anyone else excited for virtual choir 3?!?

  • @captainbuttons Dude yes!

  • @captainbuttons I am!! I HAVE to be a soprano though! I can't do alto, but I can't get the High A flat!!! URG!

  • @HarryPotterHD99 High A-flat?!?! Geez, I don't know if I can hit that. I'll have to look at the parts. There must be a soprano II part though...right?

  • @captainbuttons Nope, ALL the sopranos at one point at together at the A flat but the I have the option to stay up there or go to G flat and it splits to 5 parts for the Sopranos after that!

  • @HarryPotterHD99 Yeah I took a look at it right after reading your comment! I think it's doable, your voice just has to be really warm to get up there

  • @captainbuttons Yeah, I can squeak it! It isn't pretty but its there

  • @HarryPotterHD99 Just sing it really, really quietly and maybe no one will notice the squeaking! :P

  • @PfeiferCj I LOL'd at your comment for a good 5 minutes. :D

  • Our choir did this song last semester, and I find it pretty amazing that when "eyes" is sung, there are 18 notes being sung at once! Wow, Eric! LOVE this song!

  • To hear this work of so much beauty where the music and text become one, fills me with wonder. To be able to perform this work takes one away to far places, however, to conduct the work carries me away.........

  • oh.. i do.. because i sang it in a choir. (:

  • How? How can a single song be so amazing? How is it possible for so much Dissonance to be so enjoyable? How is it possible for so much phenomenal sound to fit into five minutes?

This is music, and it's music I'm going to be keeping on loop for a while <(^.^<)

  • I dont even know what just happened...

  • (BYU Singers

  • Every time one of those gorgeous chords was sung it felt like my entire body was hurting, but not in a painful way... well yes it was pain, a stunning bittersweet pain that echos as it dies so that you never want it to end. The music hurts as only music can. It's Amazing...

  • Virtual Choir 3!!!! i vote this song!

  • @Crothonora It moves with too much speed and complexity to be used for that unfortunately. Eric said he'll either create a new piece for the third virtual choir or maybe use When David Heard.

  • @Crothonora This IS virtual choir 3! virtualchoir .ericwhitacre. com

  • I know it's been said on a million videos, but rainymood goes really well with this song...

  • This dissonant harmony is so pleasant it hurts.

  • beaches love wetness.

  • Those of you who are under the impression that there are only 12 essential notes in music are actually quite wrong. Plenty of contemporary and modern composers make use of microtonal composition, which uses intervals of fourth-steps instead of half-steps and the use of quarter and three-quarter sharps and flats.

  • What I want to know is how the alto sections that do this are able to hit that extremely low e flat on "fills".....

  • @choralfreak8 We just got it like that ;) lol

Also the guys are singing an e as well so it doesn't have to be very loud.

  • @choralfreak8 yeah i'm singing alto and don't know what to do there D:

  • We are singing this in choir and will be competing with it in state.... Its such an amazing song to sing and listen to. Eric is a genius

  • This made me thirsty.

  • @azahnd82 made me need a piss!

  • this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever hear. I would blast this on a stereo over any song on the radio.

  • This song is so incredible to sing! You can literally feel it...just amazing...and btw it is in fact 14 parts and technically there are only 12 notes in the world that are used in creating music. There are in fact doubled notes.

  • @MrMayorCheezIII

That pretty much depends on what you mean by "part". When people spout off numbers of parts they usually don't count different octaves as the same note.

  • @MrMayorCheezIII technically, no. There are infinite number of notes. You can use ridiculous enharmonic spellings like G triple sharp... and it'd technically be a different note.

I know what youre saying though, that there are only 12 half-steps in an octave, ergo only 12 useful divisions... etc... just technically there are more than 12 nameable notes cause you can name them in crazy ways

  • I absolutely love singing this song in chamber choir at my school.

  • I miss singing this song w/ my choir SO MUCH.

  • I didn't even notice people were singing! lol...maybe I'm ignorant..it just sounded so smooth like a melody of just music.

  • The writer is Octavio Paz, he was inspired by his poem...and there is a beautiful story behind this song and Eric Whitacre's life during school. The info is in another Youtube video...just BEAUTIFUL!

  • I'm speechless.......I mean....wow...

  • That was one of the most beautiful pieces and performances I have ever heard. Mesmerizing!

  • @cobbles56 Whitacre is like rich dark chocolate. It takes maturity and sophistication to appreciate. I wouldn't expect you to understand. Go back to Rebecca Black.

  • @hmloughin 18 people don't like dark chocolate. xD

  • @hmloughin

unf which is why i love rich dark chocolate <3

  • I get to sing this in my high school's chamber choir this year. I'm so excited :)

  • oh my. i don't think i have ever heard something so absolutely beautiful. that was incredible. wow.

  • This song was so hard to sing!

  • @ninjasylph nooo.. lol not if u can hear the harmony.. the notes are so compatiable.. well i didnt think it was.. i thought it was epic...

  • @iloveredsox7020 well, what I should have emphasized was that there were a lot of inexperienced singers with me an they could not hold the high notes or stay on pitch to save their lives

  • @ninjasylph ohh god! i know how that feels.. -_- ugh..!! lol it ruins the song when u have people who are inexperienced sing a much more advanced song.. but just being able to sing this song is an experience in its own.. i love eric whitacre

  • I am 100 percent sure those 17 people accidentally pressed the dislike button. They will live with the guilt for the rest of there lives.

  • @MusicIIV I pressed it because i thought it was tuneless crap with retarded lyrics which had they not been written on the boring accompanying video would of been impossible to comprehend from the offensive cochophony of squealing pigs that assulted my ears when i played this tripe.

  • This poem is actually by Octavio Paz and was translated to English by Muriel Rukeyser, for those who have commented, or wondered.

  • i had to pee after listening to this.........

  • It sounds like he's writing about a kelpie. A mythical water horse that takes the form of a horse and kills its prey by luring them to the water and drowning them.

  • @Azel1600 My thoughts exactly. You're probably right.

  • @Azel1600 wow.. maybe.. who knows.. nice connection though

  • Pure Awesomery..

  • I love 3:06 how they sing flowing. It really does flow. Breathtaking song, Eric Whitacre is amazing. Such beauty. Bravo

  • I like Eric Whitacre, but I think his poetry tastes leave something to be desired. "Night with the eyes of a horse that trembles in the night?" Come on, people.

Still though, brilliant writing just in terms of the music.

  • @Jimbothenoob I'm pretty sure he didn't write this, if that was what you meant. Myself, I do like the mystery of this poetry, because if it's taken seriously it really can be beautiful.

  • My mind is blown

  • I really hope Eric does this for Virtual Choir 3.0!

  • Ive listened to this song a million times. More half of that was this same exact video recording. However, I just read the description. This is my favorite video of the song and you say its "not AS interesting as others"?? No. That dont fly! ;) I love this one.

  • A thoroughly magical and soulful performance. Deeply moving.

  • You only hear this stuff in a dream... how beautiful

  • I enjoy arranging my own harmonies to his music by ear. This one is the most fun.

  • ok...who the fuck disliked this?! i am going to snipe you.

  • @ydna93 Way to ruin a soulful experience with vulgar language. :(

  • this was my favorite song we sang in my choir

  • My first exposure to this man's work, but he appears to be an amazing composer.

  • @pbj4toast Have you heard Nox Aurumque? My select choir sang it, and it made me cry each time. Out of this world beautiful, the lyrics and music are phenomenal!

  • @xxryroluvxx No, I have not heard Nox Aurumque, but based on your recommendation I would like to hear it. I wonder if it is on You tube.

  • @pbj4toast Definitely! There's actually a live performance conducted by Eric Whitacre, and the choir is amazing!

  • Sang this at MIRIC this year.. Beautiful and amazing song.. Just.. Wow

  • beautiful...

  • I WAS THE 700TH LIKE! WOOT

  • i cried wow

  • We sang this for my University Preporatory School Chapel Singers concert. We did amazing...but hearing these BYU singers blows me away...<3

  • I am learning this, and this is my second time learning Whitacre's composition. The previous one is Lux Aurumque. I am deeply indulged in the beautiful scene he created. Must work hard to overcome some bars and polish it to perfection before going to the stage :D

  • If you open your eyes, night opens doors of musk,

The secret kingdom of the water opens

Flowing from the center of the night.

    Awesome awesome lyrics.

  • 14 people are fucktards.

  • @lalaura241 Actually, 14 people (1 from each part, mind you) tried to sing this but just couldn't handle it.

  • 14-part harmony. Me gusta.

  • Comment removed

  • @MisterSpazzy I'm pretty sure it's not 14 parts... That would mean some of the parts would have to double each other..

  • @SpaceSuitMan There is a 14 part split on "If you open your eyes"

  • @Dimebag719 Interesting.. ha

  • Comment removed

  • @SpaceSuitMan yeah my chamber choir did this piece last year. It was a small choir so everyone had their own part. very difficult, but easily one of the most beautiful pieces ive ever done

  • @SpaceSuitMan Not really. There are way more than 14 notes in this world. And yes, it is 14 parts

  • @SpaceSuitMan it's actually 15-part on some sections. and yeah, it seems impossible. our soprano section splits into 5 parts.

  • @sharonasiana you are correct: the parts needed are Soprano 1,2,3,4,5; Alto 1,2,3,4; Tenor 1,2,3; and Bass 1,2,3

  • @sharonasiana no it's not 15 parts. If you're talking about the chord (not really a chord) at the beginning of measure 34, it's most definitely 14... Or the other section 'in flows forward" measure 48.. its still 14. haha. no worries.

  • This is so Beautiful and Epic! I hope we sing a piece From Eric for UIL

  • Sang this with Concordia Choir this year, amazing piece that seemed to bring us together very well and the dissonance is just gorgeous.

  • This was the first Whitacre song I ever heard. I was immediately so engrossed that I didn't even notice it had started to snow, though I was looking out the window.

  • I go to other videos to listen to other choirs singing this piece and then I always find myself coming back to this choir and this version. It's just sublime.

  • I sang this in college 13 years ago. I can see from the comments that this piece is still popular with young people. I suppose that's the hallmark of great music; it lasts generations.

  • 1:24 just makes me feel wonderful.

  • This is my favorite song.

    which is kind of sad

but seriously this is the most beautiful song that has ever been written.

  • this is what will be playing when we go to heaven

  • This is truly the music of heaven on earth.

  • At our State Choir Festival, My high school SATB choir sang this, and we got a perfect score. :) This is by far my favorite song I've sung in choir. Absolutely breathtaking.

  • @mca2793 Me too. I wish my high school could sing this song someday. but for now, I'm in 8th grade and I love this song; Even when I'm not singing this in chorus.

  • @SuperFlashDriver I hope you get to sing it someday!

  • @mca2793 Yeah, I guess. :) I don't know what's gonna happen in my high school, but I'm sure that someday they'll take it and let us practice it. But I don't really know, since I love to sing AND play all @ the same or different times.

  • @mca2793 Yeah. I hope so too. :)

  • @mca2793 I'm pretty sure you go to my school... hahaha not to be creepin'.

  • @coolmj308 Haha yep! And we know each other, too! I looked at your channel and I knew it from the Joshua Radin (the BEST), not to mention your name! It's Marissa, haha. Glad we both love Whitacre, too!

  • I could probably talk about this song for an hour and about all the things this choir did right that I really really like. Instead I'll just leave it as this. I sang this song and it changed my entire view on choral music. Truly an amazing piece both to hear and perform.

  • 2:38-3:18

favorite part. it gives me chills and makes me smile at the same time.

  • Weber State Universities' Choir sung this at my school last week. They had us turn off the lights, they gave me chills!

  • Open your eyes......and the night will bring forth the memories you so dear cherish. Close your eyes........and the memories will remain in your soul forever.

  • if u ever need an exapmle of dissonece.. here is the song.. i just doscovred this man today.. and i can tell u he is now my favrite composer of all time..just listen to the harmony.. it pure freedom and imaginstion.. simply amazing.. brought me to tears

  • lord of the rings should of had this...

i always think of something so epic when i hear this

  • feels SO GOOD to SING

  • irony. the dissonance sounds so harmonized. it's beautiful.

  • I just got to do this piece as part of a 50 person choir, and it was unbelievable. i'll never forget it.

  • I...I think I just cried.

  • Do this guy a favor and buy this song

  • beautiful. this is my first time listening to this kind of music..at my age (seventeen) I am usually exposed to mainstream garbage but upon finding this piece I am rethinking my preferences as well as my surroundings as a whole.

    This is beautiful.

  • awsome!!! Briught tears to my eyes.

  • This is the one of the best choral numbers I have heard in a very long time. Beautifully done.

  • our high school's chambers singers is doing this song :)

  • An arts magnet high school choir I worked with did this some years ago. They surrounded the auditence in a mixed formation and did it with the lights of the theatre off. Time stood still. The choir and the piece were amazing...

  • Whitacre could remix "friday" and make it sound like the most beautiful thing ever.

  • Whitacre wrote this piece in 45 minutes. What. A. Boss.

  • Absolutely beautiful and cathartic. The BYU Singers sing it flawlessly as usual

  • im listening this song under rain.

  • I have goosebumps. This is a beautiful piece of music! I have my speakers turned up as high as they can be to hear all of the harmonies, but still it's not enough; I wish I could be there, fully surrounded by the beaty of this music.

Eric Whitacre truly is a musical mastermind.

  • My conversation with my choir director

"Adam, would you want to do 'Water Night' in choir this year?"

    "Was that a rhetorical question?"

  • @spamodell I think that your music director should do this song. Cause I gotta say that both Roy Todd AND Eric Whitacre are GREAT composers.

  • these lyrics are somethin'!

  • it is actually a wonderful piece, but it makes you sad, especially at the end. You just want to close your eyes and go beneath all those sounds.

  • @carloCGN Dive into the current of the night, if you will.

  • this is the best version I've heard of this song.

I love the fact that the soprano doesn't stand out that much as in other recordings

  • whoops,I mean't "movies" not moves.

  • We did this for Concert Choir last year. I'm proud to say, that we were just as amazing... hitting that kind of harmony... is SOOOO blissful. :)

  • @electricblueyes530 I applaud you for finishing and performing this piece. Are you talking about a high school or college choir. I have heard some spectacular high school choirs, but not one with this wide a range for the basses, this clear a sound, and this superior production of the harmonic overtones. Those golden harmonic tones are just mentally dissolving. That said, beautiful piece when done even with not-quite-master singers.

  • Man, If this was in the moves, everyone would've cried if someone passed away that was based on true events.

  • I love Whiti-Chords! :) this and When David Heard equals best music on earth.

  • This is what musicians call an eargasm

    such beautiful dissonance..

  • Click to listen 0.00ne more time! =)

I cannot stop listening it. This is... incredible... I have no words for say it.
