I actually do not like how you chose movies as the clips for this video. The "extraordinaryness" of movie stars and the characters portrayed seems to take away from the humbling fact that this video presents us with.
If you had video of everyday people doing everyday things it would be much better.
(not taking credit, someone else's): Cosmos: Carl Sagan, The Planets, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Some Like It Hot, The Big Lebowski, Moulin Rouge! Me and You and Everyone We Know, Memento, The Elephant Man, Das Leben der Anderen, Amelie, Red Beard, The Ten Commandments, Glengarry Glen Ross, Terminator 2 - Judgment Day, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Yojimbo, 2001:A Space Odyssey, Monty Python and the Holy Grail,

@JillHiggsBoson The guy in the rain is from the shawshank redemption, and u should be slapped for not knowing that. Seriously go out and watch it, NOW. The next sci fi is 2001, a space odyssey, but im not sure about that. The one after the lady and the tramp is The proposition, a little known australian movie. The idea was to create an australian western, and was fairly well executed; I quite liked it.
I've heard this speech many times but it is still too overwhelming. I have to catch my breath at the end of the video. It's like the wisdom from his words is a waterfall and I'm cupping out my hands trying to catch all I can.
This is just an image of perspective. In comparison to the solar system/universe, we're just a pale blue dot, but from the perspective on Earth, we're still something big enough to care about. If you look at something from afar, you can't see it in detail, you have to actually be there to truly appreciate it.
i love Carl Sagan every human on the planet needs to hear this it is the most important narrative ever written by a human through out all time.
There are no signs of humans in this picture. Not our re-working of the Earth’s surface, not our machines, not ourselves. From this vantage point, our obsession with nationalism is nowhere in evidence. We are too small. In the scale of worlds, humans are inconsequential… a thin film of life, on an obscure and solitary lump of rock, and metal.
I pretty much have this video memorized... Carl Sagan is one of my heroes, and who truly started my great love for science. Without this man, I wouldn't have been able to come out as an atheist or have the courage to admit it to myself. He shows that our little tiny world in this endless universe and not "blessed" by some divine being or that we serve any special purpose. Thank you Carl, everyday I miss you and wish you could see how far we have really come in the fields of space and science.
This just makes me wonder what the hell we're doing as Humans. We seem to be taking the great gift of life for granted and not caring about it's continuation. We see our planet and nothing else. The only thing that matters is what happens right here right now. The future is hardly a concern to those in power. They just care about their money and position instead of the people they're meant to help. I don't know if we'll wake up and see what's required but I sure as hell hope it happens soon.
people, break free from the chains of slavery and dictatorship. how can we allow a handful of people to dictate our lives? life took billions of years of complex processes to finally end up with us, and yet we are forced to live it according to other clueless people's decisions. wake up, and enjoy the time you have on this planet however you want to. now we have science and technology to ease our lives, so it is time to evolve.
Rounders, Scent of a Woman, The Infernal Affairs, What Time Is It There?, Brazil, Superman - The Movie, North By Northwest, The Shawshank Redemption, Patton, Mission To Mars, Blade Runner, Rear Window, Lady and the Tramp, The Proposition, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Feathers in the Wind, In the Mood for Love, Singin’ in the Rain Again, not my list, but pretty helpful
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Life Is Beautiful, Cinema Paradiso, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Dead Zone, Ultimate Jordan, Leon - The Professional, Once Upon a Time in the West, Vanilla Sky, Gattaca, Gladiator, Braveheart, Red Sorghum, Hero, Reservoir Dogs, Gangs of New York, American History X, Taxi Driver, Mystic River, Citizen Kane, The Right Stuff, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Dancer in the Dark, The Usual Suspects, Miller’s Crossing, (cont'd)
Here is a list of the videos in order (not taking credit, someone else's): Cosmos: Carl Sagan, The Planets, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Some Like It Hot, The Big Lebowski, Moulin Rouge! Me and You and Everyone We Know, Memento, The Elephant Man, Das Leben der Anderen, Amelie, Red Beard, The Ten Commandments, Glengarry Glen Ross, Terminator 2 - Judgment Day, The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers, Yojimbo, 2001 - A Space Odyssey, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, (cont'd)
Again another good Astronomy video with little views where as a video by a woman on the tram in London to South London was spewing racist garbage at foreign passengers received over 12 million views in the first week before being removed
Sagan was one of the great thinkers of our time .He was an exceptional conduit between the scientific and the common folk . Maybe someday the masses will catch up to the thoughts and visions he shared years ago Perhaps we will all learn to stop killing each other.
Cosmos was a true work of art.Still a thrill to watch
With the commercialization of space travel on the horizon, it won't be people like Carl, you, or myself that experience this important perspective on our existence. Space travel will be a privilege of elitists, politicians, and dignitaries, the very people who corrupt the perspective that Carl Sagan has enlightened us to.
almost a perfect video except Carls words don't need the backing track. In fact, it drowns his wonderful words out by three minutes in that I need to find another video for the clarity. Otherwise, an excellent edited video.
@Tittilacamp I have to agree that the music overpowers Carl's poetic words too much. However, I think the music is perfect for this music and that it should have been tone down a bit so his words are more audible.
I've watched many video renditions of the pale blue dot speech, but THIS ONE has the best music, the best video clips, the best editing, and the best choice of narration audio (the extra two minutes at the beginning talking about Voyager lend so much to the storytelling quality). Well done, Carl would be proud of your humanistic creativity. While the words are the most important part, your creative talent enriches the experience of listening to and reflecting on those words' meaning.
This video should be shown to all high school/secondary students. Last week at school, they were teaching us about U.K's place in the World, E.U, common wealth and UN, if only they also taught us about the World's place in the universe as well..
I would say I come back to this video all the time, but I don't need to, because a poster with this entire quote is sitting right next to my bed. The quote is next to a picture of the universe, with an arrow pointing to the speck of dust saying "You are here." Because, it's one of those things that makes my life so much better, makes me realize how insignificant the little troubles are. How insignificant the micro-world that surrounds me really is. I stop worrying, and start exploring this life
@GARBAGEDAY2113 Not to start a flame war or by any means make you feel like I'm being hostile, but did you just completely miss the point of this video?
I know its weird to say, but this youtube video changed my life. I have gone from a confused young teenager who didn't try in anything to a young man in 6 AP classes on the way to college. This video gave me purpose, and I come back every few weeks to pay my thanks and remind myself of why I'm the man I am today.
No... no, it doesn't. You are very small, yes, but you are very important. If life truly is rare, then in all of this vastness, you are the only rvngizswt. And what you have to offer the rest of humanity, the Earth, and the Cosmos (!) is far greater than you, I, or any other being can possibly imagine.
@rvngizswt I realize that, but it also reminds me that I have but one life to enjoy all the great possibilities it provides me. There are two sides to nihilism, possibly what you perceive, which is totally understandable, but the point of view I hold is a secular humanistic one, where my acitons worth doing for the sake of the betterment of your experience as well as mine.
@jtowens55 I have to say that your story is very similar to mine! I came across this video when I had just failed to get into college and didn't know what to do with my life at all! Now its a few years on from that and I'm currently studying at medical school!
Carl Sagan was a great mind, well rooted in reality. It is pathetic this video uses a bunch of bullshit Hollywood movies to convey the thoughts of this sincere man. There is plenty of real images of the world out there, try again.
I see what you mean, but don't you think that the message gets a bit of a push when the personalities that Sagan describes are shown by popular icons that a lot of people can relate to?
Plus I think that the majority of the movies that are shown are not from Hollywood, though I agree that there are alot of real images could also be shown as well.
Happy Birthday Carl , you live on and I i hope i can make a a better planet and can do something in my power to let us all live in peace and Harmony ....your message will never be forgotten
happy birthday carl we will always miss you. If only carl was around during these tough times things would be better he was such a sign of hope for mankind.
This is a beautiful and moving piece you've compiled here -- I just wonder why you didn't select any footage from "Contact," which is based off of one of Sagan's most famous novels, and is dedicated to his memory?
In any event, nicely done. I love this speech so much.
I miss you Carl. Time and again, I return to this video when I find the world too noisy, too full of things and people... then I remember silence again... and the quiet voice that seems to be whispering "it won't matter, in the end."
I've watched this video every day for the last two years. It still blows my mind and gives me hope for humanity just as it did the first time I watched it. Carl Sagan, you were a brilliant man, and the world needs more of you.
No, not the one where they're driving away IN the car, the one where they're walking away from the car. The guy and the girl. Right before singing in the rain.
mogwai are great, very fitting music, the thing is you can listen to the narration on its own any time you want, the music adds an extra emotive element
@spp41 Every week I need a reminder that we are indistinguishable from the millions of other pixels of light in the universe. An accident of geometry and optics. It helps remind me that despite the frustration and pain I might feel at the way we treat each other, there is a final judgment, and it has already been made: we are less than a pixel.
Interesting version but the music is a bit too loud and cover Sagan's voice. You know, words are good enough to imagine things by ourselves sometimes. But anyway, your version is cool.
CARL SAGAN: "Much more of our free time should be spent with things that are intellectually valuable - reading, solving problems, thinking critically. I'm not saying people should stop watching TV, but a lot less wouldn't hurt. Brain Building by Marilyn vos Savant and other books like it do a good job of laying out all the ways education and intelligence can help us and, more importantly, how to foster intellectual growth. There are so many wonders that knowledge and the intellect can bring us."
Ok, I counted 62 films. Without cheating I could identify 54: Willy Wonka, Big Lebowski, Some Like it Hot, Moulin Rouge, You Me and Everyone we Know, Memento, Elephant Man, The Story of Others, Amelie, [japanese woman crying?], The Ten Commandments, [alec baldwin film?], T2, LOTR, Rashomon, 2001, Monty Python & The Holy Grail, Eternal Sunshine, Life is Beautiful, Cinema Paradiso, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Dancer in the Dark, Usual Suspects, Miller's Crossing. Continues.....
@abrelosojos18 Continued: Fear & Loathing in las Vegas, Rounders, Scent of a Woman, Infernal Affairs, [asian woman sitting on bed], Brazil, Superman, North by Northwest, Shawshank Redemption, Patton, Mission to Mars, Blade Runner, Rear Window, Lady and the Tramp, [The Proposition], Ferris Bueller's Day Out, [woman dancing on seashore], In the Mood for Love, Singing in the Rain.
@abrelosojos18 This should go before Fear & Loathing and after Miller's Crossing:
Life Aquatic, To Kill a Mockingbird, [martin sheen film], The Great Dictator, The Professional, [the wild bunch?], Vanilla Sky, Gattaca, Gladiator, Braveheart, [truck being burned], Hero, Reservoir Dogs, Gangs of New York, American History X, Mystic River, Citizen Kane and 2001 (again).
The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world. - Carl Sagan

I like when he says "Our imagined self-importance" during a shot of Sean Penn.
It's funny cause Sean Penn's an arrogant asshole.

Carl Sagan was a great mind, well rooted in reality. It is pathetic this video uses a bunch of bullshit Hollywood movies to convey the thoughts of this sincere man. There is plenty of real images of the world out there, try again.
TehHampsterHead 2 months ago
@TehHampsterHead

@TehHampsterHead Agreed, I liked the video, don't get me wrong, it's well done, but it's the word that have beauty.

@nbelkowski It's all about the monologue, considering you've took the time to complain - you haven't understood it.
p.s using hollywood clips is a way communicating the information. Peace x

I've watched this video every day for the last two years. It still blows my mind and gives me hope for humanity just as it did the first time I watched it. Carl Sagan, you were a brilliant man, and the world needs more of you.

@spp41 Every week I need a reminder that we are indistinguishable from the millions of other pixels of light in the universe. An accident of geometry and optics. It helps remind me that despite the frustration and pain I might feel at the way we treat each other, there is a final judgment, and it has already been made: we are less than a pixel.
thejuncopartner 2 months ago

The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world. - Carl Sagan
