This particular ramp has a 1/2 inch ply wood base covered with a layer of Skatelite, which is a hard plastic material that is about 1/4 inch thick. The plastic is basically the same material that those grocery store shopping bags are made out of just a whole bunch of them heated and compressed into a hard 4 foot by 8 foot sheet. I think creating a ramp out of metal gets dangerous down the road due to wear and tear, since metal edges are not cool when they slice into your skin :/
