i am very surprised that the plane reacted in this way by a relatively small overweight and a 5% rearward CG shift. Especially because the plane had made a number of succesful flights after the last (improperly done) maintenance one would still wonder what these pilots did differently from the other ones?
@demolition000 no, the weight was to far back making it unstable and causeing it to pitch up all the time which is an unstable position for the CG to be because if it keeps pitching up, it will eventually stall, then pilot has no control and that happens
The airplane has just got out of maintenance and apparently the electric pitch trim was working in a reverse order. So the pilots kept trimming nose down but in fact the airplane was pitching up the opposite way till it stalled and crashed. Very sad and scary indeed.
they "Estimated" that each person is about 120 pounds although some may be way over it. and they estimated that each baggage is about 40 pounds although some are over. but now they weigh each passenger before boarding.
The elevators are manually controlled by the pilots for Beechcraft. If the cables were oppositely screwed, the plane could not climb up while the pilot actually pulled the steeling wheel to get the nose up, the plane could continue to run on the runway without taking off. Please check about this from the "Dead Weight" video of Discovery channel.
Nope...plane was 600 pounds too heavy for takeoff, the CoG was too far arrears, and the elevator trim was working in a limited range due to improper maintainence.
my boss tells me the plane had just under gone maintenence and something with the elevator trim wasnt done right. he was booked on that flight to greenville but didnt get on bc of the wieght issues.
The crew used an industry standard calculation to work out the weight of the passengers and luggage. The figures the industry used at the time were wrong therfore the plane took off way over designed weight, combined with the other mechanical defects they couldnt control the pitch. Not the crews fault
There were several bags in the rear cargo area that were so heavy that they had already contacted the destination to warn them to use caution when unloading. There was uncertainty about the weights. This from news reports that I remember.
Pilot error will bite ya in the arse every time. Checklists are made for Checking. Visually point to the correct instument look at it and ask yourself is it right, instead of repeating "check" to quickly.
RIP to all those who perished including a former classmates father. That was a horible accident. We have a memorial behind the training center for this crash in CLT now.
Loss of pitch control due to incorrect rigging of the elevator control system. Also, the center of gravity of the plane was too far aft. In short, the latter was caused because wrong assumptions were made about the average weight of passengers and bags. It appeared that the average weight used in by airlines did not account for certain flights with many heavy bags and for the increasing average weight of U.S. adults.
I pray for victims and their families. Thank goodness these videos are made to investigate tragedies and hopefully prevent them from happening again in future.

why does the aircraft being too heavy make the CoG go back,
emachines34 2 years ago
@emachines34 it's not that, it's that everything got pushed to the back, wasn't balanced properly

Jtimberlake blames the plain, but as you can see the plain was fine..nice and flat as plains usually are. The problem was with the plane.

Iam sure you have an impacable checklist discipline. i sure would love to have you chuck yeagers in my sim just once..
Off course you should look at it and check what you see. However don't be so quick to judge from your lazy seat.

It wasn't pilot error. The accident was caused by a contract facility not properly adjusting the stab.

I thought it might be an inappropriate amount of elevator trim. Nevertheless that sucks.
SteveHoffman92 4 years ago
I guess it was an elevator problem,or too many BIG GUYs sat behind.

I swear I'm not being facetious...but are you saying one of the reason's this plane crashed was because there were too many obese people on one side?
