I saw phil ochs in Darwin Australia I think it was 1971or 1972 he sang in what used to be a second world war anti-aircraft gun turret I think it was in fanny bay it was supprisingly spacious I think there were about 50 people? .He sat with our group in the Vic hotel and also was in our house 51 mcminn street. My name is Nigel
Beautiful tribute, wonderful pictures, thanks LinusJames. I just want to travel back in time and meet him sometimes!!!! what a great singer and person. Wow.
@Treebard Seriously, his radical politics are not mine. I am a Democrat and moderate liberal but what I love about Phil is .. his melodies, lyrics, gust, compassion. I have most of his records. I like his more non-political songs at least as well as his political songs. Celia, 1/2 century high, When I'm Gone, Changes and Cross My Heart as well as more political songs as Flower Lady, I'm gonna say it now, Tape From California, and The marines has landed on the shore of Santa Domingo.
@11xzxzxz why limit yourself to a party and live in the left right two party system that the social engineers create to divide and conquer? Do yourself a favor and become an independent and look into what both parties are criminally up to.
@wmarcus1203 You are right but I can see the outrageous corruption just fine from any view. I really am an independent but never a libertarian, I supose.
Love this guy. Too bad he died almost two decades before I was born :'(
Possibly the most sad lost of the past century, well, at least in the top ten, we've had few and far between, but there were other horrific deaths, especially considering the 27 club and so fourth. Regardless, Phil Ochs is a legend. Long live peace.
Many a time over the past 8 years I have thought what Phil would have done with Bush. I saw him at Hunter College in 1972. "Here's to the state of Richard Nixon". Sadly, there were no Phil Ochs' to reduce the Bushies to the sorry excuses for human beings that they are. Cheney might have had one of his death squads go after him.
In 1968 I had the opportunity to open for Phil Ochs at LaCave in Cleveland. He WAS my hero and responsible for getting me into music. I did a lot of his songs and asked if he minded if I did a few that were not on his set list for that evening. He very graciously encouraged me to do do so. We had a chance to talk about an hour. It was a night I never will forget.
I envy you. I have always wondered where does this kind of creative spark come from? Phil was a mortal but his writing came from a "more than mortal" place. He never redeived hid due.
no more songs was a metaphor for all the songs were done there is no reason for him being anymore. Phil was a genius and sad he felt that way. we need voices like his to remind of us daily of the injustices done in the world.
wow, I just found out now that he's dead and about his decline in the mid 70's, damn that sucks... i would have loved to see him do a show now with Joan Baez er sumfin, would have been great, oh well.
Ahh totally forgot about Phil Ochs, and I used to like him alot. His best song I thought was Rehearsel for Retierment, ahhh long time and many memories ago
I beg to disagree with you. By far the best Phil Ochs song is crucifixion. There may be more meaningful/political songs but cru will break your heart.
Ofcourse you may disagree, its all a matter of opinion isn't it? I dont know the other song, but I will listen and let you know. Here in Holland PO is almost unknown. Had it not been for some american soldiers who came at ease at the American base here in Holland after been in Vietnam in those days, I wouldnot have known his music.
I am sorry, maybe my english is not that good, but I think I dont understand what you mean. No more songs? More songs is impossible because he is not alive anymore.
In 1969 at the height of the protests I was 18 and draftable in 2 months. I saw Phil perform this at the Academy of Music in Philly. It's a very old building with wooden floors. The place was packed to the rafters. When Phil kicked into this everyone was foot-stomping and it released a cloud of dust from the ceiling. I'll never forget that moment. I get a rush remembering it.
Yeah, he is such a witty writer and there is so much passion behind his words, you know he meant every word he sang. It's really sad he felt such despair in his life, if only he could have seen the influence he had on his fans. =(
It's always the good ones who burn out early and the bad ones that never go.
Two artists I know of who are carrying on the tradition that Phil held so dear are George Howell and Billy Bragg. You're not alone knarf, Phil has hit a lot of hearts. I clearly remember the very first time I ever heard Phil Ochs. You're only 17, it sounds to me like you're going to go do great things! Peace, Jim
..1969 Chapel Hill, NC Phil Oches performed Carmichael Auditorium.. he was fantastic, and to top it off he did Elvis, in white outfit, that was better than Presley.. how cool it was. same year had iron butterfly, cocker, bb king and others.. those were some fun days..
I was lucky enough to have seen Phil in concert several times in NY--he was and still IS GREAT and boy, do we need him now more than ever-- that little girl is his daughter--I think her name is Alice.
I HATE WAR. I'm sick of the pain and loss and hurt and tragedy. thank you so much for posting this song, it rings as true and heartfelt now as it did during the Vietnam war. I missed his voice so much. I met Phil & hung out with him in NYC with Naomi & Alex. I urged him to write lyrics. I tried to help him. I saw him perform in Harvard Square at The Garage. His loss was a genuine tragedy and so very sad, personally. It's so nice to hear his voice... again, thanks, from my heart.
Thank you for posting this! It's a beautiful collage, very moving and aptly done, a fitting tribute to Phil and one of his greatest songs. So many moods to fit in one man that even he couldn't contain them, his face as open and evocative as his words and music. Yes, Phil, we miss you indeed, but more importantly,
we need you again, and beyond the tragedy and triumph of your personal demons, you're still here for us. Bless you, and may you always be remembered.
I loved all the wonderful pics, thanks for posting. Except one was of a Phil Ochs impersonator, not of Phil. Also does anyone know who the blonde kid is that he is with in a few pics?

Pop just sounds so trite and pointless.......

Mental illness destroyed him. What a waste. He never got the credit he deserved as an artist. Sad, sad, sad.

could you imagine if he had lived?
I mean '68 tore him apart, but imagine how 2008 might have healed that for him.

Actually, I can hear him singing, with more than a touch of irony and sarcasm, "I cheered when Obama was chosen, my faith in the system restored...."
