Amonium nitrate, amonium chloride and zinc dust. However it can become unstable and if left in my knife and could partially ruin it. In the rainy pacific northwest I want high temps to use in fire starting. The wood may not be 100% dry.
pretty smart man,if u could get youre hands to some other chemicals i wont be saying the names of now, you could have* instant fire,it works by putting 2 chemicals togheter and -fire- now,if youre out there and you cant make fire becuz u forgot youre lighter/matches,then what?i say,try water ^^
I made this mixture to be held in the pommel of my survival knife I built. In western WA it rains a lot and starting a fire in the mountains is a bit tougher then in the dry desert. If it's considered cheating then I will cheat to avoid dying of hypothermia. :)
As I understand, titanium can be mixed with rust too, to form a thermite mix. Maybe the titanium is also reacting with the rust here. Titanium is a reactive metal and it's boiling point is much higher than that of aluminum or magnesium. That should allow the temperature to go even higher. Does anyone have any ideas or facts? I'm trying to super heat metals in some refining process, so any way to make that thermite hotter is interesting to me.
It also has titanium cuttings to extend the ember time. The mixture was made for fire starting with a flint. Just magnesium and iron oxide burns up too fast so the molten titanium gives more time to ignite tinder.
thermite is the rapid oxidation of aluminum. it takes the necessary oxygen for the reaction from the iron oxide. the magnesium is just the starter for the reaction. it takes a very hot ignition source to start the thermite reaction
Yeah that is what i was thinking...i have a distructive mind as well..so i'v already come up with maaanny ways for that to be used hehe..good ones to..

To see the MythBusters guys set off 1000 pounds of thermite in an effort to cut a car in half, see my video

black iron oxide with titanium shavings to hold some embers. Otherwise the reaction is too fast and not the best for fire starting.

Whats the other reactant ?

Potassium permanganate and glycirne would start a fire too just mix wet or dry wood cool video too Joseph T fly2000jtb

you use this for a campfire?
thats kinda sad
takes cheating easyness to a new level
:)
whats wrong with just the magneius flint sticks

so this contains no Al? just a stoichiometric mixture of Mg and Fe2O3? this is very impressive :O

It's 6000 degrees, 2000 hotter than iron oxide thermite
Mekill60 3 years ago
Why do you think it is hotter than ordinary thermite? Because of the titanium? Do you have any references?

Sounds like a great idea!

i made some mg thermite about 2 weeks ago.i lit it in like 1 second with a lighter but i used 400 mesh mg

somehow that looks very hot

It can be flint ignited just like magnesium shavings but the iron oxide allows it to burn much hotter.

This formula should make a good firestarter even in damp conditions.
