  • very interesting thanks

  • you have some great stuff here

  • good work here

  • love the video really good

  • Why are they discussing this....on a bridge?

  • Comment removed

  • @robertlewisvazquez so if one of them says something stupid the other can throw him off the bridge.

  • These guys have too much time on their brains

  • Wheeler & Taylor, "Spacetime Physics," does one of the nicest jobs of showing why the spacetime interval is a constant for all observers, why it's = dt^2 - dx^2 (the minus sign this clip talks about), and then everything that falls out from this. Excellent book! Makes Relativity a lot clearer, at least to me it did.

  • @Cyclist0623

thanks for the hint. sadly, can't find the book where i was looking but i found a shitload of other goodies in this sort of field so ... thanks! :)

  • They totally pulled evolutionary biology into a discussion about physics.

  • @awrightiv Strictly speaking, all forms of biology are just natural cases of applied physics.

  • I wish I could understand what the fuck is making them so astonished. I'm going to find out one day and be on the same level of understanding.

  • time to go back in time to stop Einstein adding the minus sign to his equation, then we can move through time. Im pretty sure this will work. :)

  • i think you'll find its 3 minus signs.

  • can we get a bigger explination of what minus sign?

  • @Typho0n86 ds^2 = dt^2 - dx^2

    ^Spacetime interval

For a good explanation, read his book, "Why does E=mc^2?"

  • Mathematical laguage = Nature's language.

  • This Max dude seems mental!! He looks like he is about to burst into tears at some points and then bursts into laughter!

  • @starbizzleable Somebody loves to judge rather than to listen to what the man has to say. That isn't so healthy.

  • @HabeKeinMitleid Your obviously one of those people that takes everything super seriously and likes to start arguments on you tube. Not once have I said that i disagree with what he said and not once did I mention that his expression is bad. I just made an observational point. You are obviously judging me based on a single youtube comment. That isn't so healthy

  • @starbizzleable Ha ha I know - but it's quite endearing?!

  • @starbizzleable I find it profound, he is in a way insane. Imagine being able to comprehend something that sails over others, but it's something so fundamental and important it causes a surge of emotions to even think of the possibility. He must be a very lonely person intellectually :(

  • @BlooFlame I completely agree! Being a top class physicist must really mess with your head! I mean just thinking about Schrodinger's cat and the light clock on the train (explained excellently in Brian's book!) makes your head spin! I find it amazing that they can get their heads around concepts which go totally against what our common sense tells us but was science reveals is true!

  • fuck that minus sign!

  • isn't it kind of unfair to propose such a powerful supposition without explaining it in greater detail? is this a trailer for a movie?

  • are they stoned? seriously, brian usually seems sort of stoned, but max seems out of sorts.

  • Whenever someone compares moving in time with moving in space I have a problem. Movement needs time to happen. How would you move in time without (meta-)time? Wouldn't it just be statically occupying (4 dimensional) space and not movement as such?

  • @blenderpanzi Einstein's equations are what they are. That - is there for good.If they were different, rules could be very different. That minus sign sets the things way work.If there was no sign then they would work different.Maybe to move in time you'd need space the same way you need time to move through space...think about it :)

  • @blenderpanzi So your point is if I stood absolutely still in space, I would not be moving in time? Jabberwocky. Time passes forward anyways, we need time to determine how far we went from that last position to the next. But it still goes forward without us. Whats rlly a mind bender is when you realize that time works differently when you move in relation to a fixed position as opposed to something moving at all.

  • @BlooFlame No that's not what I meant at all. Your example has nothing to do with what I meant. How do I explain? First I am at point A, then I am at Point B. This is movement. It needs to points in spacetime already. Time is already part of movement. How can you then additionally move in time if you already need time for any kind of movement (in order to distinguish the two states)? Was that more clear? I'm really struggling to describe what I mean. :/

  • @blenderpanzi Not jabberwocky. Absolute zero (Kelvin) is absolute stillness in both space and time. Absolute zero is about as possible as faster than light, that is, we don't know that it is impossible just incredibly unlikely requiring more energy to achieve than seems to be available.

  • @BlooFlame not really, your internal clock still goes on = your heart beats, cells work, molecules are produced and degraded, atoms are bouncing, and electrons are revolving around nucleus's. You'd need to stop all those motions for time to stop. It's not enough to just stop. And obviously, you can't do these things, even by dying.

  • I am not satisfied with the explanation of Max. What is the point of linking the Einstein theory with the brain ??? Seems utterly ns.

  • @mubasherjamil Rather the flow of time with the ability to predict _future_ events and make plans accordingly. And it's not part of the explanation but just a funny side note.

  • 1.21 gigawatts!

  • "You can prove mathematically that there would be no point in having a brain without the minus sign" Am I the only who thinks these two should have a TV show together?

  • @mboulan96 You are not the only one. Sounds fantastical but I'm sure it works out. I love Brian, his aura is amazing I so totally want to mingle my aura with his whilst he lays back and thinks of the universe! I'd settle for watching him wank over the minus sign though!

  • @aspiebear I think you could be in luck.

Watched this clip twice now, and convinced they are really talking about ladies front-bottoms

  • @FloTinaway I think you might be correct there, though I think too that Brian is naive to the likelyhood that Max so totally wants to explore the dark recess of his black hole (even if Max himself is unaware of sexual feelings connected to people). This could escape Brian's awareness due to his brain being disorientated by the cosmic energy emitting from his own penis and the spermazones shapeshifting into minus signs and bombarding it rendering the sex part of the brain virginial.

  • @aspiebear

Just wait till he invites you to climb onboard his large hardon collider and create a black hole, while sucking on a milky way

  • @FloTinaway I must just check it is Brian's and not Max's hardon (forget the 2nd part of it) you are referring to. - all 27KMs of it.

  • @aspiebear Prefer Washing Machines to MicroWaves - much more a a buzz.

  • @aspiebear

A washing machine is good...I admit, but a cement mixer gets me really hard

  • @FloTinaway All thsi talk of sex aids out of domestic machines is starting to digress from the subject of the video I think - I'll just ride a minus sign and be done with it.

  • @aspiebear

Stephen Hawking masturbating - Now there's a stroke of genius

  • Right on! Wait. What?

  • are they high!?!!?!? :/

  • We created the minus sign and we can sure as hell get rid of it :)

  • @ArtisanTony

We discovered it, and it's a bit bigger than us. I think we should make our peace with the minus sign.

  • all i got from what they were saying was that because of a minus sign you cant go into the past.

now thats brilliant; all well and good, if you just take that as given.

trouble is I cant just accept that, unless i am told why it happens rather than thats just what happens.

  • Regarding time travel, and if we're talking about a single minus sign.. that sounds a bit like Einstein introducing the cosmological constant, because an expanding or contracting Universe violated his personal sense of "Cosmological Beauty". He deleted it, for good reason, based upon Hubble's data. We've tentatively added it back, for reasons which don't happen to be particularly well related to why he added it in the first place. The minus sign could easily have been another subjective bit.

  • Both swell guys! :)

  • <---- head exploding.

  • I wish I could understand everything that brian cox can

  • no doubt

  • @JimmyTheKiller its not just his understanding, its the ability to make others comprehend.

  • @n47m4n11 understanding is a start though

  • you can you just have to study ......... for a longggggg time

  • @JimmyTheKiller I wish I could understand everything Max Tegmark can.

  • @JimmyTheKiller Read his book "Why does E=mc^2?" and you will.

  • @JimmyTheKiller I wish I could understand everything Leonard Susskind can !!!

  • Also, String theory allows for 10^500 possible vacuums.

  • ''No they aren't necessarily likely, because in order for Multiverses to exist, our Universe must be infinite''

Well the universe can't be infinite if there is a multiverse. It will have inflated out of the quantum vacuum or from a parent universe, giving rise to a multiverse.

Our four dimensional spacetime may seem like a point particle occupying an instant in time compared to the true multiverse.

  • Tegmark has done the calculations on Multiverses, and they are likely.

  • No they aren't necessarily likely, because in order for Multiverses to exist, our Universe must be infinite, and there is no consensus regarding the finiteness or infiniteness of the Universe. Tegmark has even said that he thinks the Universe is infinite on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, implying that he cannot be sure of the answer, and thus he would not be able to calculate any realistic probability with regards to the existence of Multiverses.

  • haha, did they base Reginald Barclay on this guy or what?

  • huh?????

  • when he was talking about going back in time it looked as if he was choking up a little at the sad thought that he can't go back. I'd love to see Max Tegmark have a chat with Doc. Brown

  • @youxinxmotion i was thinking the same thing.

  • 1:04--he's talking about the minus sign and thinking "my god, that tower back there looks like a gigantic willie!"

  • Is this guy alright? Seems like he's having some kind of seizure. Anyway. Love astro-physics, this stuff is music to my ears..

  • tegmark is awesome! some of his theories are explained in a recent issue of 'discover' magazine, as well as the television show entitled 'the universe.'

  • The mathematical universe hypothesis is GENIUS!!!
