  • hi what brushes do you use? and do you have any tips on how to keep a great brush point like you always have in this video? also would you ever use a wet pallette? or should i get myself one of the ones you have with the dimples in it?

  • @BeTheBe5t I use either Da Vinci Maestro #10 series or Raphael #8404 series kolinsky brushes. Kolinksy brushes have the finest points. I use brush soap after each painting session (Da Vincia, Grumbacher, or Pink Soap.) I also use normal hair conditioner on them every month or so. (Just wet, leave in for a few minutes, and rinse.)

  • @BeTheBe5t Wet palette vs. ceramic depends on technique. People who layer tend to use a wet palette as it keeps the paints very moist. However, you have to be careful the colors don't bleed together or get too thinned out by the water in the palette.

I prefer the ceramic because I like to premix all of my colors before I start. Wet palette users tend to mix colors on the fly on the palette paper.

  • How ironic..i just finished painting my "fishing troll" and i wasn`t 100% happy with the color choice of the eye`s, and then this video pops up on my Youtube! Got some Verlinden busts and some other figures that propably will benefit from this dvd..seems that the Youtube searchengine has become more intelligent from what it used to be in regards to relevancy for the user/troll..

  • I bought this dvd and it plays like private painting lessons. Once you have watched the whole dvd you can go back to the bitesize segments as relevant. I am never going to be a master artist but since buying this dvd I am enjoying the process far more and improving...which for most of us is really the point.....Kudos HL.

  • @thegrotta So glad you liked my set!

  • that birdman mini at 0.23, where is he from? nice looking fig.

been looking at parts of this tutorial and I really love it, thank you for sharing your skills :)

  • Great dvd! It goes over everything, from preperation, tools, colour mixing, bases and more. The wet layering technique helped my Imperial Guard models greatly. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to paint better.

  • @pfulk4u Glad you liked it!

  • I am buying the series this summer. Wil there be any new dvds soon? just curious

  • Thanks!! I'm going to go on your website as soon as I can!! Thanks

  • Hey there! Yes, I've sent many to the UK. You can order direct via my website (see the end of the video for the web address, YouTube won't let people post URLs in comments.) I charge $13.50 for International Postage.

  • Hi there I'm thinking of getting the DVD but do you send to the uk??

  • Like the material... When I started painting all minis were cast in molten lead. Hence "Hot Lead". Blame English for the dichotomy of its words. ;)

  • So, is this hot lead, like the material? or hot lead as in like, in the lead?

  • What brushes are you using?

    thanks.

  • @militariacollector1 I use Da Vinci Maestro kolinsky sables. Usually the Series 10 Round or 5526 Retouch. Sizes are 2/0 to 0

  • Awesome amazing love it :D and the 12 brain dead people who dont are well.. brain dead? lol

  • Do you always work from white undercoat or is black okay?

  • @InventionThirteen It's up to personal preference. I've used both but prefer white for the brighter colors I can achieve. However, black is good for making a more subtle paint job and covers any spots you may have missed when you paint the mini.

  • @InventionThirteen Yeah like he said, I like black as undercoat but also depends on what kind of miniature figure it will become, a holy priest or something can be better primed white but a dark evil figure will be dark colored anyway so black got more chance. But for a skeleton for example they prime black and bleach bones.

you need to get the feeling with it when wich color.

Easiest is still black, you see most colors on it than on white.

My Cadian troopers are primed black.

  • id like to buy the videos where can i get them.

  • @DeathWing554 I just added the link in the description for the video. Thanks for your interest!

  • wow i may get this very soon i want to step up my painting!!! i need work on blending axes for warhammer 40k

  • HEY could you put a link in the description to order your dvd i dont know where to get it

  • @afrothunderization If it was a snake it would have bit me! I added the link in the description. Thanks!

  • Does anyone know the brand of brushed this guy uses? Are they good?

  • @AustinZilla101 I use Da Vinci Maestro kolinsky sable brushes. Some of the best in the world. Available online at planes like Dick Blick, etc.

  • @HotLeadMini Thanks for the info. :)

  • very nice i'll check out your vids

  • Back in the 80s and such it was lead so WHAT, nah jk but your probably rite these are newer products but everybody knows them as lead.

  • @kevinmcc100 What can I say? I'm old school... ;)

  • So you order these and then paint them? I like to sculpt, wit plasticine mostly, wunder how I can make pewter/tin figures.

  • @xXAkridXx Unfortuantely I don't go into sculpting on the DVDs. I touch on using putty to fill gaps, etc.

For sculpting help, google "greenstuff sculpting" and you'll get a starting sample of articles out there. (Greenstuff is the nickname for the epoxy putty used in miniatures.)

  • guys just bought this set of DVDs (i build 1/35)they have revolutionized the way i paint ,i can through out my oils and enamels now !!!!!!!!BRILLIANT A+++++++++

  • @matt23547 Thanks so much! Glad to hear they helped you out!

  • how the hell do you get the eyes... i never get it right.

  • whats the name of the song ? please tell me : )

GREAT work, i would like do to this then i would collect warhammer figures but i am such a looser in painting

  • Hey, don't worry about the crud bits. Keep going. Practice might not make perfect but if you don't try you'll never know. I was absolutely rubbish at painting to stat with, Two tips, keep it thin, keep it simple. Don't use too many colours and never, ever slop it on straight from the pot. You can always make a colour deeper with more coats, stripping's harder work.

Take a look at my Squidoo lens for the sites to visit. All the best.. Grimstone.

  • @kalleskit this is not a tutorial its a trailer-ish this for a dvd

  • this is warhammer??

  • this is miniatures overall

  • the figure on "1:17"

i really likedt the blue on the metal...

    realy nice :-)

  • agreed

  • Hmm, that hard way to do eyes, I have never liked it.

I find it easier to an off white for the whole eye, then work the iris and pupil over that, it is more centered and easier to locate.

  • Although its an interesting look at painting a mini, there's really no tips being spoken. some people may not know what you're doing. Like the tinting of the chains, they just see you running the brush over it, not that its watered down alittle so it sticks to the deeper parts.

  • 0:46 The one on the lefts' stickers upside down

  • Reaper prints them in both directions (sort of like playing cards). I think it's to show the color name whether the bottle's upright or in a paint rack.

  • I like it! :)

  • I really love the look of that stone golum in the title, where can I find it?

  • Yeah, it's an awesome mini! It's an old Ral Partha Earth Elemental. Part of the official AD&D line from the early 90's. You can still find these on eBay once in a while. Look for blister #11-426 Elementals of Fire and Earth.

  • Awesome, I feel like painting some minis right now lol..

  • Haha...it´s pewter or tin, NOT lead! ;-)

  • used to be

  • Well, I've been painting a long time... ;^) Some of the models I used were lead, esp. the old RP minis. Lead is still used in the hobby, though mostly outside the US. Reaper's P-65 line is one of the few exceptions in the US.

  • Reaper makes good stuff i only paint the miniatures not play the games and i use craft store acrylic paints

  • i think it is harder to paint with a white under coat than it is with a black under coat.

  • That's why I use grey. Black makes more minis to dark.

  • Are those warhammer miniatures?

  • No, mostly Reaper Miniatures with some older Grenadier and Ral Partha ones thrown in.

  • This is not helping

  • thats because its just a commercial

  • what minis are thoose theres awsome!

  • try going to the cool mini or not store, or reaper miniatures

  • where did u get ur eciptment from

    e.g. paint brushes and paints

  • Brushes are DaVinci "Maestro" from Dick Blick (google it.) Paints are Reaper Miniatures' "Master Series Paints" available from their store or online other places.

  • Well done! Takes time and patience for sure.

  • God i need to use white primer badly but if i do i have to restart on painting 70% of my army :P

  • You can always split the difference and prime grey ;)

  • whats the name of the oil colours of wahtever you used at the capes dont the name but the serial name like "foundation paints or whatever:P

  • They're Reaper Miniatures' "Master Series" paints.

  • I received the DVDs set.

I was so looking forward to getting it that I checked tracking service everyday.

My painting skill will improve・・・at least better than now.

  • very good but those are big miniatures

  • No, those are standard, 28mm scale miniatures. It's the most common, or "gaming" size.

  • WOW your painting is awesome!

Hey just wanted to know what brushes you use?

I'm kinda new to the hobby so what do you recommend for newbies?

  • The tell tale black handle and ultra sharp point would indicate Winsor & Newton: Miniature Series 7, Kolinsky Sable. They are the top of the food chain for miniature painting. A little expensive, but definitely worth it if you care for them properly. They can be found at many online art stores or online hobby shops.

  • Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the gilding on the handle of the brush in the DVD itself seems to indicate that they are DaVinci brushes. W&N's are awesome and I personally use them myself. DaVinci's tend to have a slightly stiffer feel to them which helps to move the paint around a bit easier. I've never used them, but I've heard great things about them.

  • hi,

    I'm Vincent from Singapore

I got your DVD set on thurdays Singapore time.I really like your teaching and the demo. I' happy to own your DVD sets and i hope you will many more of this type of tutorial.

  • it looks like something from privateer press

  • It's an Iron Golem from Reaper miniatures. Model number 02728.

  • awesome!

  • at :24 seconds , that wood patch you are using?

  • Zar Wood Patch. Available in Ace Hardware in CA. Not sure about other locations.

I just surfed online and noticed it comes in red oak too. Neat! Less under-painting for dirt bases...

  • thanks for the tip. ive always wanted to try something besides sand. gonna make my way to an Ace in san jose today. btw. your videos are well done. thanks for posting.

  • Thank to your videos I`ve already learned much about painting minis.

Btw. Could you pls tell me what music you used for this one? :)

  • Great! Glad to hear they helped you.

Originally a friend was going to compose it, but I found an online service that already did the electronica feel I wanted. Google "free soundtrack music". He really has some great stuff.

  • bulaven and SuperShifty: sorry, this is a promo for my DVD set. Check out my other videos (posted last week) for actual techniques.

  • oh i see good luck

  • umm i watched this vid and i didnt really learn anything from it

  • only problem is doesn't tell you how to paint better and any techniques to use when painting

  • Thank You Soo Much!! Finally a video that actually shows do how to paint these god dam minatures tired of playing with crappy models.

  • You're welcome! ;^)

  • god, you make it look so easy:D

  • Thank you! Glad to be of help. I actually contracted a local video company who used a semi-pro camcorder: Panasonic AG-DVX100B. This shoots miniDV tape in 24p, mimicking the smoothness of film.

  • Incredible video. Your website really helped me a few years ago when a customer asked me to paint a marble base for him. Great work. One quick question is what kind of camcorder do you use? Your quality is so high compared to others.

  • Great Vid , Laz! I thought I saw a Kubladude in there! ;-)
