although this movie was set in the post-slavery era in america, this movie seems to take place in a time where african americans lived on slave quarters on a plantation, worked diligently for no reward, and where Atlanta was a great place for an elderly african american man to set out for. the black adults in this film seem to care more for the welfare for the white little boy instead of the black one, dedicating themselves to provide for
the white child's welfare. the only time the black adults pay any attention to toby (the black boy) is when he neglects his responsibility of being johnny's (white boy) entertainer. thus, blacks on the plantation are seen as willingly subservient to the whites, going as far as overlooking the needs of their own children. also, toby wasn't even invited to johnny's birthday party. was he not good enough? this movie was meant to be a beautiful artistic film, but sadly it gave off a bad impression.
I have it on home video right here, where do you get your information?
I bought it in Saint louis in 1984 on Cassette for my youngest daughter to watch and her little boy watches it and sings along with it all the time now.

they never released this in the U.S. because of its racial connotations.
jadorexmyxdiorx990 3 years ago 6
What racial connotations?
I beg your pardon, but I saw it at a drive in when I was a little boy and all the kids in the neighborhood loved it.
Especially the old man and his great voice.
If gaining respect for a black person at a young age is bigotry, then I say make all movies bigotted!
We never saw any disrespect or hate in this.
If you want to see ignorant bigotry, check out Amos 'n Andy here at youtube!
