@Rugdopey. well I met the man, and I can tell you: he isn't. But maybe you are, so who are you to say stuff like this? I could strangle people that just comment stupidly like this.. so fuck you pal, and wash your filthy scummy mouth
the opening of this clip, with the sagrada familia, pärt's music, and björks words, is almost too much for me. It's three of my favourite things in life, at once.
Nice but... Bjork... "Divine state" that Part believes in, or what is essentially greatest part of Eastern Orthodoxy, has nothing to do with, nor it is even similar in most remote way to falling in love. But still, it is a lovely short interview.
@rucka12 perhaps you should read St. John of the Cross "The dark night of the soul" and perhaps you might revise your opinion about "falling in love" and mystical experience....??
@GabrielsNob Perhaps you'd like to read my comment a few times and perhaps you'd like to try to read something about core principals of Orthodox Church. Firstly, St. John of the Cross is not recognised by OC, nor is any other Saint of the Roman catholic church after 1054. Secondly, just because Bjork is an artist – it certainly doesn't mean that her view should be taken seriously. Considering her quotes, she is hardly a candidate to speak of Christian faith at all. All the best.
wonderful and amazing... only a big sould can make it, and only a sould can comprehend it! What is the name of the music which is played? Somebody knows it? Light and counscious to everyone in the world!
arguably the most pathetic interview about music ever.
it's simply mediocre to try to use metaphors to the world of sound and music. If you try that, you will fail exactly like Bjork did. It becomes a collection of empty remarks trying to explain why you like/don't like a kind of music.
Killing/not killing with music...the distance between the two...Pinocchio, little cricket...sins...Luckily music doesn't need this nonsense to survive.
I have a crush on Bjork having a crush on him and his music. I'm not sure she would be considered by most as "hot", but there's something about her affect and the way she is so enthralled by his music that does it for me.
So I was all into this interview and totally getting where Bjork was coming from, all the while being impressed with how sincere Arvo Part is, and then at the end of this video there's some dude blowing up a plastic glove on his head and I almost fall out of my chair laughing.
@ficsci She's a fantastic musician, but I think what she said there is not at all profound or interesting. The comment about Pinoccio could have been said about herself or practically ANY artist who has a pulse. I mean, dark side, light side, sin and virtue..? Think about it. Put any musician or writer in Arvo Part's seat and you could say the same semi-no-brainer!
@MrDarkbloom She's not just saying "dark side", "light side". She's also pointing out the conversational structure of Arvo Part's music. In response to your comment, would you notice these things if someone else hadn't pointed it out to you first? Analytical thinkers often point out the simplest, most "obvious" things, but regular people would just let these things pass under their subconscious. That's what make analytical thinkers so special. And Bjork expresses her analysis in her own way.
@SpencerCHale Serious music needs to be listened seriously, his not making popular music. IT'S ART (You Know?) You have to listen carefully to notice how he conceptualized minimalism (ART) using two voices, one is using the tonic triad (sins) and the other moves diatonically (forgiveness). His works dialogs with music history, he sometimes uses mathematical formulas, inserting them in the harmony concept made by renascence artists in the pursuit of truth/god, to affirm he makes chamber music.
try watching this video at the same time as listening to la monte young's the well tuned piano, and there voices and avro's blends right into it! beautiful
WOW! Björk & Arvo Pärt, two geniuses, hanging out and discussing the finer aspects of the complex compositions of sound. Björk gets right in side Arvo Pärt's mind & he appreciates her attention.
I am very suprised with bjork's questions, she seems to really hit the spot and I'm very glad that beyond the barriers of language and cultures, they both understand each other and come to a common conclusion, they both seem very serena, humble and almost childish to me, I love how art is a universal thing we all can share no matter what
i love bjork's music, but in this interview - maybe because the difficulty of speaking in english - she's talking like a child with no musical knowledge.. but it's very sweet how arvo part accepts her naive point of view.. as a very humble human being he acknowledges her honesty of feeling.
@Gama291 Has it occurred to you that many bold artists have retained some vestige of their childhood, and that perhaps this allows them to express themselves in ways that others cannot, and still others, such as you, might not understand?
WOW! Two brilliant musicians in a single video! It doesn't surprise me that Bjork and Arvo Part would eventually meet and share such insights; their music is similar in the respect that they're both deeply contemplative people! Thank you for posting this and sharing.
She is very experimental. I have followed her since the early 90s and she has consistently pushed the envelope when it comes to sound and song. Although she is well-known, she has more of the qualities in her music akin to underground bands that do some pretty progressive things and don't get recognized for it.
The Beatles were and still are the most rapid-paced group with regards to their moves forward. Amazing what they did in 7 short years. Bjork and Radiohead follow that lead.
you have to watch this two or three times to realise she is not an idiot and in fact she makes quite interesting points, although she should have thought a bit more about what she was going to say and grammatically how, before setting the camera rolling...
I'm just stunned how magnificent person he is... He's a true genius. Our choir had a chance to work with him when I was younger with the song "Peace upon you" and back then I didn't know he was that famous.. BUT when he walked in the room, I felt like the room was suddenly entranced with his sincerity. Doing music under his command was fantastic. He's a genuine person and his music is as amazing as he is. Thanks to such lovely people - I feel proud to be estonian.
@PlasticMouth Yes, Mr Part is an amazing composer. That's all very nice, but what on do you mean when you say you're proud to be Estonian simply because he is?? That doesn't make any sense. How can a person be proud of the simple fact they were born in a particular country?? How can a person be proud of someone else's achievements??
Next on YouTube: Britney Spears interviewing Karlheinz Stockhausen :) Oops, guess not, he's dead.
Seriously though, if geniuses like Pärt and their music can get more exposure, even if via interest from pop stars, I'm quite happy about that. If pop scene draws inspiration from this music -- even better.
Yep, I was just exaggerating :) But in my opinion Bjork stopped making interesting music many years ago, and now she's more pop-star than artist. It was quite different at the time of this interview I guess.
And I like the interview as well. She it talking in a kind of naive way, but very much to the point. It's very difficult to express in words why this music is so charming, but she does it quite well.
I would not consider björk as Pop (except a few mainstream songs). She is highly experimental in her music, so i'd say she fits into the the interviewer role here.
I like how she does the interview, no question here, and yes, she is a bit more adventurous than most of the mainstream musicians, but highly experimental?... Well, of course it depends on who you compare to.
ok i admit "highly" is a very subjective term. But compared to other more or less popular musicians she is highly experimental. Then again, i just repeated what you said, soo... i agree with you :-D
I've loved Pärt's music deeply and dearly for years, yet today is the first time I've ever heard him speak - I never knew he spoke such good English. Thanks for posting this.
some may say that Bjork may not have been the best choice to them i ask, Could YOU do any better?
Both Arvo part and Bjork do not have English as their first language, yet despite this, I feel that Bjork has not done a bad job. For this I gave it a Fav and a 5 star.
I think Bjork is nervous here, because of her immense respect and admiration for Arvo Paert. I think she holds up quite well, i've seen similarly fans of bjork and how they turn to mush just by seeing her, so to see her interview one of her fave musicians, and have a laugh with him over silly analogies, i think it makes this exchange more precious, more informal.
Arvo Pärt is a composer who I greatly admire, and I really love to listen to him speak. It just bugs me a bit when she says things while he's still speaking.
But Arvo Pärt isn't a god, who can't be interrupted, ever! Humming and nodding is a VERY normal non-verbal communication device to show that she's agrees and understands. Grow up. And im willing to bet that Arvo Pärt would get extremely annoyed with you licking his ass. Just like most people...
Aside from your lousy grammar you really have even more mental problems
No offense to Bjork, I find her truly an great artist, but her interviewing skills in this case are less than expected - I mean this interview is about Arvo and i feel like Bjork is taking his space talking about her. I don't know what was in the head of BBC to put them together.
but maybe her personality gets something out of Arvo that you would not get out of standard interview techniques because these are 2 artists and ultimately the listener is as important as the composer so the interview works well but its far too short. Btw i am not a bjork fan but respect here anyway.
Yeah, but at any time in your thinking about Part have you privately said Avro Fart, or even Avro Kart, as its kind of amusing. Avro Fart, chuckle chuckle, oh what a word!
I just listened again to Silouans Song (second track on Te Deum).... no kidding it made me cry buckets! And I hate classical music... People either love or hate Parts music.... went to see Bjork with the Sugarcubes many moons ago.... she was good too.
"you give space to the listener, so they can go inside and live there" captures the essense perfectly, so too her arm gestures when she explains,.... most expressive. They both seem so pure... and childlike, loved to watch as well as listen. The duality of the music is beautifully explained, much like that which rages within each of us, the pure aching to shine forth. Beautiful interview with a beautiful man!
Genius recognizes genius

They could not find a better person to interview Arvo Part than Bjork. Whay not one hour interview? - I can listen to them forever. A Masterpice!

The interview here is fine. She is very descriptive and so is Arvo.

hmmm, "in memoriam of Britten" which starts this clp does NOT leave me any space to think or feel, it's such an overwhelming presence...
Crowds me out of the room. It's just that beautiful, and addictive.

some may say that Bjork may not have been the best choice to them i ask, Could YOU do any better?
Both Arvo part and Bjork do not have English as their first language, yet despite this, I feel that Bjork has not done a bad job. For this I gave it a Fav and a 5 star.

what is with that guy at the end blowing up a glove on his head?

I think Bjork is nervous here, because of her immense respect and admiration for Arvo Paert. I think she holds up quite well, i've seen similarly fans of bjork and how they turn to mush just by seeing her, so to see her interview one of her fave musicians, and have a laugh with him over silly analogies, i think it makes this exchange more precious, more informal.
More human.

I wish she would stop saying "yeah" and "mhm"

If that really is the essence of what you get from this conversation I think you have a problem.......

@havsule
Arvo Pärt is a composer who I greatly admire, and I really love to listen to him speak. It just bugs me a bit when she says things while he's still speaking.

@Shred

I don't know what was in the head of BBC to put them together.
endeavourthelimits 2 years ago
but maybe her personality gets something out of Arvo that you would not get out of standard interview techniques because these are 2 artists and ultimately the listener is as important as the composer so the interview works well but its far too short. Btw i am not a bjork fan but respect here anyway.

Yeah, but at any time in your thinking about Part have you privately said Avro Fart, or even Avro Kart, as its kind of amusing. Avro Fart, chuckle chuckle, oh what a word!

Yeah, but her attempts at acting are appalling.

Does anyone know the name of the piece playing at the end of this video? from about 5 minutes onwards?

I just listened again to Silouans Song (second track on Te Deum).... no kidding it made me cry buckets! And I hate classical music... People either love or hate Parts music.... went to see Bjork with the Sugarcubes many moons ago.... she was good too.
willhum 2 years ago
after the interview, Part said to Bjork "I didn't understand a word you said, but whatever your'e on,I want some."

Bjork is so much tender and really childish talking about music.

I Love the last frame of the video! :D perfect haha.
Ok now serious, Pärt is a genius in my opinion. His belief about music is what sets him apart from all those others.
