And Billy's got plenty of other sounds up his sleeve - most of the Mermaid Avenue album is solid, with a few great tunes (all old Woody Guthrie songs that were never put to music previously). And Billy's got plenty of other sounds up his sleeve - most of the Mermaid Avenue album is solid, with a few great tunes (all old Woody Guthrie songs that were never put to music previously). Check out "Ingrid Bergman" if you don't know it already. BTW, Billy Bragg's music is also great in its own right, IMHO.

Billy Bragg is making a mockery of Woody's music style by not attempting to put a Woody type tune to these lyrics, it sounds like commercial/public announcement, which is not the down home style of Guthrie. Bragg is not worthy to touch Guithrie's lyrics. Who died made him the king of folk music?

Billy's been putting Woody's words to music for a while now, some really beautiful stuff has come into being (as opposed to being imprisoned on paper in someone's drawer) because of Mr. Bragg. Does anyone know what Fascism is? Seems to me that it has now become a general term of abuse hurled by slightly left, right-on NIMBYs whose only interest is to protect what they have. And anything that disrupts their world view or intrudes into their lives is the work of "Fascists". The Fascist political model would work fine if if people were educated in its benefits and advantages. A little bit of totalitarianism might just be what this country needs.

Before you claim victory, it would probably help to know something about the ideologies that you're attacking. Second, fascist Italy was state capitalist (look it up). And finally, on the traditional political spectrum, the left = more control of the economy and less government control of social life, while the right is the opposite. Therefore, communism and fascism are not similar.

You can have a dictatorship (military, fascist, even "communist" like modern China) and still have capitalism as the operating economic system. You can have a bourgeios dictatorship (like the U.S.) and have capitalism. You can even have a "socialist" government of varying degrees (eg. Venezuela) and still have a primarily capitalist...

"Free market capitalism" is a utopian fantasy but let's ignore deep philosophical debate that you obviously can't understand for now. Capitalism can't exist under a truly democratic (socialist) government because it's inherently undemocratic, exploitive, unjust and in the end analysis plain old theft. It is able to operate under our system because as you're so willing to admit... we're far from having a democracy.

..total votes were cast. The population at the time was roughly 4 million. So yeah, I guess capitalism was really working (due mostly to the free labor of slavery) for about 2.5% of the population. Wow, that's about the same percentage as now...only difference is now we have a vast majority of wage-slaves and no chatel slaves...what progress!
