  • I learned rising before I learned sittig, but I prefer sitting a lot more

  • Are there any aids available to assist a disabled rider (MS) with squeezing or applying leg pressure to horse?

  • in spring i'm going to learn how to gallop, and i started with the lessons like 3 months ago :D

  • I have been told it will take you longer to get the sitting trot down then anything else. This is a really good video of what to do.

  • I find sitting trot really hard at the moment, I'm currently learning sitting trot and I'm bouncing around everywhere. Keeping my heels down whilst in sitting trot is so hard also, I'm bouncing round trying to relax and the stirrups are going everywhere haha... rising trot is way easier >.<

  • Rising trot is WAAAY easier for me lol i look like a chicken in sitting trot

  • My horse responds to voice comands very well so I don't usually have to give her the kick

  • this is a good tutorial, however you would naturally bounce around a lot so sitting is not as easy or natural as rising, however this is good to look at before learning how to canter and i will certainly refer to your video

  • I can only do the rising trot...

  • HAND TO LOW!

  • I started horse riding around 3 years ago and stopped because all they taught me was to walk and the posting trot. Could someone please tell me if you think id be ok to try and canter ? i really want to but im worried in case i fall off or make my horse nervous ?

  • @EireannS21 You should learn sitting trot besides walk and posting trot. If you can do sitting trot nicely and comfortably. It means you have good balance and your body is soft enough. You are ready to learn canter. Either your coach try to earn more money from you or you are not ready yet. Try other coach to figure out.

  • i wish my seat at the sitting trot was as un-bouncy as that, but thats what ya get when you've got a Quarab lol

  • One tip, didn't really help much :|

  • ctually..at my riding skl, they mix female and male saddles and i think the ones i feel less comfortable during sittting trot are the male saddles.."\ [ima girl\

  • How do you not bounce around everywhere? No matter what i do, i bounce around EVERYWHERE when i do the sitting trot, anyone have any tips on how to stay still? If so please let me know, thanks :)

  • @misschatternatter01 Leg musclt lol i had the same issues but its all in the leg or calf muscles

  • i like posting trot more

im too old and my back can't stand bumping :p jk

  • @goanna92 lol sounds like something my little sister would say lol

  • sitting trot is so easy!!! just relax your back and move with the horse, but make sure your hands don't move too much that's the only hard part for me.

  • I know this hasnt got much to do with it but im doing a competition soon but im on a very, very, veryyy bumpy horse when he is in trot and canter,, any tips to help me not bounce up and down so much? thanks xx

  • I had a lesson the other day and I just couldn't get the horse to trot. I spent an hour clicking and kicking with my heals. I've got it on video. I look like a fool!!! I was doing everything I could to get the horse to trot but it only trotted for about 3 x 4 second bursts during 1 hr and that was only with the help of an instructor pushing my heal into the horse and encouraging it to go. Then when my instructor got on the horse it trotted and cantered without a problem! What went wrong?

  • @Lizbethbike two weeks laater lol- look where you want to go and kick like you mean it

  • I ride western, so the sitting trot is easy to me :P

  • i learned the posting trot first then sitting trot XD

  • This horse is so beautiful. Hard to tell her breed, some parts she looks like she could be Andalusian, and in other she moves like a warmblood, =)

  • OMG I SWEAR TO GOD HE IS EXACTLY LIKE MY HORSE! Whats his name? :P

  • I'm awful at sitting trot T.T I bounce a lot, I'm even better at canter :P The teacher is always telling me to relax, but I am relaxed xD At least I think so... :E Oh well, I guess I have to keep trying. Congratulations to those who can do a sitting trot well xD

  • @anamagalhaes92 Seriousley, its impossible. My instructor just screams at me.

  • @amazingsingershannon Wow, at least mine doesn't scream, he tells me to trot without stirrups :( And It's even worst --.

  • @oreokittykittencat

    i deffornately agree with you

i startedd lessons last month and began with rising trot then to sitting trot.

i love posting trot! but last week i did it without stirrups, it is so difficult but well worthit.

thumbs up if you love a good horse ride!!

  • @XbigbearXful is mine good??? help me improve youtube.com/watch?v=Dia7keCqtug

  • @XbigbearXful

My first time I tried sitting trot without stirrups I practically fell off sideways (I managed to hang onto the saddle).

  • @deathbyfurballs Lol! My first fall came from attempting sitting trot without stirrups - I just slid off sideways! :P

  • @XbigbearXful i agree posting without stirups is sooo hard!

  • i loooooove expert village. thanks to them, im a horse expert!! thanks guys!!

  • I rode Western until I was 12 and then moved to English and enjoy it a lot more. I personally find it a lot easier to post in English considering the stirrups are so much shorter. Even though Trail rides, horse camps and everything tell you you should post in Western which isn't really how it's supposed to be :P I post in English and Sit in western :)

  • It's funny how she's trying to teach people to sit the trot but she's still coming up. This horse's gait is so smooth, but she's just sitting. She's not flowing.

I don't know why expertvillage had a western rider demonstrating the posting trot and an english rider demonstrating a sitting trot...

  • I find sitting trot depends on the horse you're riding....my gelding Sam has a very short choppy trot which makes sitting trot really uncomfortable, I bounce around, my legs get swinging which makes me hold with my leg causing him to move faster....my other horse Gavin has a very smooth trot and I prefer sitting trot on him....

  • i live in england and in my lessons i found the rising trot was a lot easier than the sitting trot, i dont know if that was just me but thats how i found it ;-) x

  • I do this in england and our horse wont move if you just squiz them you have to kick em really hard over and over again for them to trot...

  • I actually learned the posting trot first, then sitting. I personally think that posting is much easier :D

  • @oreokittykittencat i totally agree! i learned the posting trot first & it's more comfortable for me

  • @oreokittykittencat agreed, sitting trot is uncomfortable.

  • @sarah4life050399 if it is uncomfortable, it means you have not learned how to sit a trot. I felt uncomfortable before. Now, I love it. It gives you a longer ride than a posting trot.

  • @allthewaythrough Well, it's probably so uncomfortable for me because I'm a boy.

  • @oreokittykittencat I agree!! posting trot is so natural for me, sitting trot is not!!

  • @oreokittykittencat Me too!!

  • @oreokittykittencat ya!!! omg in a lesson i had to do no stirrup sitting trot and it was soo hard! im kinda afraid of sitting trot b/c i fell off in sitting trot...

  • @oreokittykittencat Because it is xD

  • @oreokittykittencat Same, I cannot do the sitting trot.

  • @oreokittykittencat I learned that way aswell

  • @oreokittykittencat i agree

  • @oreokittykittencat i agree!

  • @oreokittykittencat Agreed!

  • @oreokittykittencat Yes it is .... Sitting trot needs some practice...!!!!

  • @oreokittykittencat

    agreed! XD

  • @oreokittykittencat Its hard for me to trot and NOT post, lol!!!

  • @oreokittykittencat especially on bumpy horses lol

  • i think it i s fine for trainers to start beginner on sitting or posting trot which one is going to be easier really depends on the horse and rider like a horse i ride sometimes has the most amazing sitting trot it feels like ur floating!!! and other horses are easier to learn on posting trot cuz ur bum wont be so sore

  • From my personal experience always learn the sitting trot first. If you only learn to post on the trot, then you'll find it alot harder to sitt the trot.

  • i tried to sitting trot yesterdaii my pony was like " wat ur trieningt to do stupid" lol this helped alot il try it todaii cos i dont have an instructor lol!

  • I find posting easier but i guess it matter how you first started riding :)

That horse either has a really small trot, really smooth, or that rider is really good at looking smooth

  • Ok, I just started riding like 5 weeks ago. and well..I was ok. But the thing is we switched instructors half way through and I never learned the sitting trot, but she is making me do it. Any advice? I tried getting books from the library, but the explain it sooo hard. Like, I feel like half of me is somewhere else. PLZ HELP, I feel soooo stupid, bcuz in my lesson, everyone is already on a canter and two point and crossrail!!!! HELP ME PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!

  • @sississis06 dont worry about it i am a beginner too.and when i see other people cantering i think wow they look so good i want to do that! and thats what encourages me to try even harder. the most importnat thing for the sitting trot is just finding that perfect position at first it will only come once in a while by chance when ur heels down ur back in the perfect straight but leaning postition and hands quiet. but soon you will notice that it gets easier and easier to find that position and...

  • ... with practice you will be able to hold it longer and you just cant rush yourself! it will come with practice and patience!

  • @englishhorseriderUSA Thanks, I am starting my two pint position now, any tips with that??? Becuzm I get up and the fall on the saddle again. Plus my helmet keeps falling over my head.If anyone has tips about my ywo point plz help!

  • @sississis06 Press down on your heels, keep yor legs strong and tight to the horses body

  • @sississis06

just sit =) I've been riding for what, 12 years, and i got the sitting trot only 5 years ago. i was never taught correctly. You have to loosen up and follow the horse's movement with your seat, quite complicated, but here in the video she just sits, that is like bouncing around, that is technically not correct but many do so. just look at some dressage video, you see that the rider really follows his horse and doesn't bounce around. same thing for the canter, good luck =)

  • I hate the sitting trot with a passion. I love posting. It's always such a relief when my instructor finally tells me to post haha

  • i cant do the sitting trot on my lesson horse but anyotherone i can...wierd he has a very springy trot..

  • I think sitting trots are harder. I'm not good at it so I end up getting a sore back or butt! Rising trot is nice though, and mroe comfortable.

  • the way i lern my sitting trott is to ride a bouncy horse bare back and just keep tinking sack of patatos and relax your body as the horse goes up breath in. and as it goes down breath out. i always say sack of patatos sack of patotos sack of patotos for some reason it makes all your weight drop down to your feet. then when you ccan do it bareback you can do it with a sadle with ease! i mustsay yoga is good as well!! :)

  • sitting trots are so hard :/ Im so unbalenced, I used to be good at them but now i ride a different horse and her trot is so bouncy :(

    any tips ?

  • Try Yoga. If you want to get your balance, to be more centered, Yoga, Pilates, a big ball even, would help.

  • haha!

  • lol i cant do sitting trop either so i just go from rising trot to canter, i can feel when the horse is on breaking point lol

  • yeah me too.. sometimes we sudden must go from a rising trot to a sitting trot.. and than I loose my balance..

  • I ride a dressage horse, so the sitting trot isnt terrible on her :D

But if im on any other horse...well...thats a different story haha

  • I looked at this vid when I started riding and I thought its really good and it helped me alot. but (i'm a dressage rider) it didnt hep me achive the proper seat (now I have the seat). to all begginers here is some advice on sitting the trot/ exersizez u can do to help:

    - try following the horses movements with your back

    - if the sitting trot hurts your back then tell your trainere because a horse with an uncomftrebel trot can really hurt your back

  • - try sitting for a few good steps then go back to rising trot

    - one exersize u can do is sit for two steps rize one and other combinations

    -try ridding with long stirups

    - important!! remember - sholders back(sit back), hands near your body and a bit above the mane, and heals down.

    and have fun!!!

  • Absoulutely excellent adcice is to keep the horses head low so its back is rounded. You will find it a lot easier to sit that trot.

  • i jsut started today and i must have looked so stupid on the sitting trot till i found the rythm and relaxed thats the best advice i found rising trot much easier but my horse i was riding was not in the modd coz it was raining so he kept stoppin dead on me

  • I started with rising trot, I found it much more easier as it is alot less bouncier. Cantering is in a way a bit easier than trot as you move more with the horse, rather than bouncing around like an idiot! Haha. My sitting trot isn't terribly great either... Though I am getting better... Haha. These video's are good though :) xx

  • I'm OK at sitting trot but the horse i ride she is really bouncy at its hard to do a sitting trot cuz when you are your coming like 7 inches out of the saddle! but last week was really good i was relaxed and very still but i was holding onto the mane so i wouldn't loose my balance since we couldn't attach the saddle pad to her saddle....but in the canter to i have to go into a little "half seat" cuz if i were sitting trot into the canter it would be so uncomfortable and bouncy i would fall off.

  • Ha ssamee

  • im TERRIBLE at sitting trot... i look like a bouncing idiot who almosts loses balance -_-

  • Really work on sinking into your base. To jump well, your base of support must be there. I really work on sinking into my base when sitting trot, and I can do a nice sitting trot on my big WB!

  • storm my competition is in two months can you give me trotting cantering and other basic tips :O

  • Again, base of support, base of support! You must let your weight sink down into your base and stretch your leg down and around your horse. Your lower back must be flexible and moving with the horse.

  • i started trotting on my first lesson and i started with rising trot which was easier for me but then i did sitting trot and i started bouncing around i am even better at cantering than at sitting trot

    i'll try ur advice ;P

  • Agree...a sitting trot is much harder than a rising trot especially on a horse that has a lot of action.

  • it's harder than it looks. you have to have good leg muscles to keep yourself from bouncing all over the place. as for posting, look at your horse's shoulder to help keep the beat ;D

  • this video is kind of ineffective because there's no explanation of how to achieve a good sitting trot. it's much more than just sitting there, but that's what you're leading beginners to believe.

  • I totally agree. This video would only help someone w/ a supper slow western pleasure horse.

  • agh!! that looks way harder than the posting trot!!!!

  • Beautifully ridden! Well done :)

  • you should really start with a rising trot because you keep better balance, and there is a smaller chance that you will fall off, and you learn to move with the two beat rythem of the trot ^_^

  • Not to mention some horses trots are so huge a beginner would fall right off the horse if they tried sitting first. They just don't have the hip flexibility yet.

  • my teacher tells me to kick the horse. i dont want to but that wat she says.. i prefer calf pressure.. i do it when shes not looking :P

  • Well if the horse responds to calf pressure then thats what you do. Either way you should start there then move onto a kick only if the horse does not respond.

  • yh.. i get that now.. i had a really responsive horse for about 4 lessons then my instructor told me to ride this mare hu was so stubborn and unresponsive.. my legs ached after all that kicking and she only trotted for me 3 times!!

  • Haha, the horse I ride for lessons is way more stop then go. but I guess thats better when I don't have total control over my legs yet.

Do you kick at the girth, or behind a bit? I find it better to kick behind if calf pressure isn't working.

  • thanks! i'll try that.. i usually kick the girth (it explains y she can't relly feel me :P) i have a lesson tomorrow so if i have the mare agen i'll kick a bit further behind. i probs wont have her tho coz we didnt go well first time round :P

  • Some teachers teach their students to post trot first, some teachers teach students to sit trot. either way is fine! personally, i think rising trot is better to start with because it teaches the student to follow the horses rhythm. i also think that posting trot should be taught without stirrups because otherwise the person my accidently learn to brace with their leg. also, some horses might be really big and therefore hard to sit trot on, which would be hard for a beginner. but thats just me.

  • the posting trot is easier and what everyone does first not the sitting

  • The posting trot is easier for me but when you start western and you say "rising" trot or "posting" trot they look at you like you just said the horse talked back to you.

  • but is she in a western saddle? nope she is not. she is teaching english style and that is what i'm talking about if she were in a western saddle it would be totally diffrent. why would you even say anything about western in an english video?!?!?

  • no but this is just for beginer riders and if you love western so much go watch kelly instead this is not for professinal riders it is meant towards beginers who don't show and english is way better in my opion but anyway if you want to talke about western riding go watch a western video. and they are trotting not cantering in this vid...

  • We even english riders dont just get on an start post troting go watch someone whos in an english horse camp you dont see them posting. -.-

  • i started on a rising trot!

  • I started on a rising trot too.

  • i will say but... i prefer the english way realy

  • My sister walked in while i was watching this and she asked what it was doing. I told her it was the sitting trot. Then she asked me how the horse can trot while it was sitting down. Lol

  • that's cute

  • Haha that's adorable

  • @goanna92 lol

  • @goanna92 lol

  • From the description 'the horse's head will keep pretty quiet.' Well no, that depends on the horse and anyway it's irrelevant? Hmm so expert.

  • I think she's comparing it to how much the horse's head moves in the walk and canter. Their heads tend to bob, so compared to those two, it does stay pretty quiet when the horse is on the bit. If you don't like expert village, don't watch their videos.

  • They arn't really. Teaching how to canter you horse on an english saddle when they're riding western.

  • um no cantering is both english, stock and western. It just seems that way because its comfy!

  • Yeah but most western riders call cantering loping. I do. Same thing though.

  • my horses head (well the horse i am riding right now and for the next month or so, his head is bouncing with him not quiet

  • this is a good sitting trot because you don't want it to be too forward yet not to lean back. being in the middle (like she is) is perfect.

  • Horse is not at all forward!!!! Therefore No Rhythm = No point!!! Scales of training!!!

  • I hate this! It is better 2 get a trainer. I am training right now.

  • this girl is way better than kelly at the other expert village horse videos.

  • lol got that right.!
