I heard that composer for Kingdom Hearts made this theme. No surprise as it really does sound the boss tunes from Kingdom Hearts. It actually has some notes that are very similar to Guardiano Nel Buio.

Rather than a theme for someone's death, it sounds more like a theme that would play if you were forced into a battle to the death with your best friend or something...theres a hint of tragedy in it starting at around 0:40, that makes me think that.

You are right in the description. I can really see this as the theme that plays when Mario and Luigi are on the river of revival, knocking back energy to revive Bowser.
