I have a question just quick. My horse is a really trained show horse, and he is trained to back up off pressure of the reins. I still kind of wanted to teach him this, but I don't want it to the point where if I'm in a show, that pressure on the reins means kneel instead of back up. Any recommendations?
how should i hold the reins exactly, i can have her bow by holding one leg up and saying down, but i want her to buckle her knees, how do i do this? also how do i get her on both knees?
This looks like a nice method, but I can't help but realize your horse is nice small sized, with a small bone structure. Would this method work with a giant friesian? I can probably get my arms in the same position as she is not that tall, but she is large in build. She also has a extremely sensitive mouth and I am afraid that this might ruin her sensitivity to the bit. Would it?
Ok, I watched this and tried it with my horse yesterday. He continued to lean down but it was almost like her became scared and jumped back up. He would also just spread out his legs instead of bending his one leg to go down? What can I do in this situation?
Hi, great video, i wish my horse was that willing. Quick question... What if teach my horse to bow and lay down with preasure then won't that effect him while he is riding? like if i am riding him and i ask him to back up (by applying presure on the reins) and all of a sudden he lays down... that would kinda be a problem haha. Has that ever happend to you? is it a different kind of presure? Thanks
Haha, was he eating grass when he was laying down flat? haha that was funny..although, I've never heard of using a bridle to do this trick..I know how to do this trick with a lead rope & if needed, a lunge whip (I have the trickonometry book) lol
I have a 3 year old. I taught her to bow but I can't have her do it without me picking up her foot and telling her down. Any advise would help bunches! :)
How do you keep your horse from backing up when you're holding the pressure on the reins? (I've tried this method once, unsuccessfully, I might add) My mare ended up continuously backing from the pressure. How can i do it differently and is there a certain way you have to hold the reins and apply pressure? Also, I've tried to teach her to bow with a carrot and tapping her leg. I have to practically put myself under her to get her to bow. She focuses on the food too much. Please help!
@EverythingEquine01 1) Continue to hold the pressure until your mare stops backing. Horses learn from where the release is. Do not punish her or let the pressure off when she is backing...she is closer than you realize to the right answer. 2) Hold the pressure until she looks or point her nose to the ground even if she is backing slightly (she has to learn how to shift her weight back). 3) Hold the pressure until she starts to paw or buckle at the knees. 4) Hold the pressure until she bows
@EverythingEquine01 The difference between step 1 and step 2 backing is in step 2 she is not backing to get away from pressure but to figure out how to go down so watch the gesture she makes with her head and neck and allow it by following her nose down.
Quick question? I've tought my mare to lift both front feet by touch, is she set in that way now or can she be retaught? Same question with other aspects of training she is a 10 year old could she be retaught everything?
@Zallein093 Hi There, Any horse can learn something new...they maybe set in their ways to a point but with patients it's amazing what they can do! I would not even implement the bow by touched her legs at all so that she does not get stuck on that. Start with a fresh method in mind and once she has the idea to bow or lay down than add touch...it will make it easier for her.
What a beautiful horse! It is sooo cute how he sticks his legs out when he lies down, and is like 'Woah, dude! I can eat while im down here! :D' Im defo gonna try this with my 12.2 welshie :D shes pretty smart so she should get it.. I tried the carrot method but then she get too focused on the food and not what im asking her!! XD x
this would work with just halter right? i'd love to teach my horse this when i have free time, but i dont want to hurt his mouth at ALLLLLL! cause im not a pro, just wanna teach him some things for fun, just to be like, well MYYYY HORSE can do THIISSSS :) im not say im completely stupid around horses, just not a pro :)
wow, that's amazing.... but how did you do to make him low his head, usually I try to do that with my mare but she pulls her head up instead.... should I use carrots?
@leyryka28 I do not use carrots, but certainly if it helps them to learn that is fine for the first try or two. It should take 10-30min to get the first bow using this method. Be patient to hold the pressure steady until you get the desired response than release and PRAISE!!
P.S. I can not make a horse do anything, I simply continue to ask until the horse stumbles across what I am requesting ;)
Hey I have a miniature horse that I am trying to teach how to bow. At the moment when I ask her to bow she sticks her head between her legs and bends her knees a little bit. Any idea how to get her to bow and go down on one knee?
@InTheJumperRing Hey Jumper! She will get the idea if you just hold the steady pressure. If you are releasing her for just putting her head between her legs and bends alittle you are telling her that's all you want. Be patient, she will offer it and when she does praise profusely and allow her to stay down as little or as long as she wants the first try...than if she gets up too quick just simply ask her again. She will learn to wait for you. Patience and Timing the release is key!
Great! thanks i'm going to test it on my horse :D I've teach him to go spanish walk and rear but i just could not figure out how to teach him to bow and lay down (the way whit carrots just dosent work..) ..but i think this will help a lot! thank u :D (sorry for my bad english, i'm from sweden..)
@TheJojjoHanna Awesome! Hold patiently and it will happen. I have taught this trick to many horses with several different methods, and this by far is the easiest! Have fun with your horse :)
so you just pull back until they bow? seems simple enough! :)

I like this way! It's safe, no ropes - only bridle, calm and connecting with horse. Well done :) I have seen some harsh ways about youtube!
