Maybe, just maybe the fight should have gone into the next round .....but evident throughout the fight that Margarito was throwing and landing the harder punches.....and Martinez was out on his legs when Joe Cortez assisted him when the fight was stopped.
margarito was better here than he is now.... he used his jab so much in this fight, he controlled martinez with the jab and let go of his hands when he got in range.... problem is margarito looks a lot slower now.... maybe it's problems making the weight, at 160 i think he could still give sergio a run for his money, if he starts using the jab again.... martinez still has the same style as he did then, but margarito neutralised it with the jab....

Antonio had a chin of granite and relied on it as part of his strategy. And that has been detrimental to the quality of his skills now.

@1978jarban Martinez would beat Pacquiao with relative ease. That is not an insult, Pacquiao (imo) is the p4p best.... the size/reach/weight advantage would simply be too great. Pacquiao knows this, which is why he refused to defend his JMW title.

@strife23 "when did he have jmw title"...guess you didn't realize the Margarito fight was for Martinez's vacated WBC JMW title. It really shouldn't have been for a title considering neither fighter accomplished anything noteworthy at 154 and the fight was held at a 150 lb catchweight. After this fight...Pacquiao publicly stated he is too small for 154 and won't fight at this weight again. I consider this a declaration that he will not fight Martinez...who is the top dog at 154.

margarito didn't have no knuckle pad....he had plaster of paris....its not like you would be able to tell it was there unless...they just put a lil too much on that one time....or put it on to late....after it drys... you wouldnt be able to tell at all...

It's crazy watching this after watching the Martinez of today. He has nowhere NEAR the slickness and savvy then this fight happened compared to now. That flawless leap-in-leap-out and lateral movement just aren't there. He was looking pretty ordinary under Margarito's pressure.

The stoppage was in no way premature. Martinez was done. Look at his body when the fight is stopped, he couldn't hold himself up anymore

Maybe a premature stoppage by Referee Joe Cortez . Maybe, just maybe the fight should have gone into the next round .....but evident throughout the fight that Margarito was throwing and landing the harder punches.....and Martinez was out on his legs when Joe Cortez assisted him when the fight was stopped.

margarito was better here than he is now.... he used his jab so much in this fight, he controlled martinez with the jab and let go of his hands when he got in range.... problem is margarito looks a lot slower now.... maybe it's problems making the weight, at 160 i think he could still give sergio a run for his money, if he starts using the jab again.... martinez still has the same style as he did then, but margarito neutralised it with the jab....

@salserito01 margarito wasn't 'cheating' here, when javier capetillo took over in his corner is when the suspicions started against cintron many suspect was the first evidence of 'foul play' but not at this early stage.... margarito showed in this fight how to beat sergio martinez, pressure and jab.... anyone who can produce volume and has a good jab beats martinez.... problem is there's no middleweight who can do that... guys who have the volume and pressure don't jab eg. paul williams/ chavez

@HSVIRK You're right, Margarito looked really good here and was just about at his peak. I think his problem now stems from taking too many punches and it's worn him down. All these idiots talking about his gloves being loaded forget one thing: HE WAS NAILING MARTINEZ. Plus, he was doing what he always did and was walking through all of Martinez's punches. Antonio had a chin of granite and relied on it as part of his strategy. And that has been detrimental to the quality of his skills now.
