  • I assume this is old and you have purchased more rock already. Your fish most likely will die from ammonia poisoning. Live rock is essential because it is surface area for bacteria to grow.. Basically your fish crap and produce waste(ammonia) this waste is eaten by bacteria that turns ammonia into nitrite, which then another form of bacteria turns nitrite into less harmful nitrate.. Without enough live rock in your tank there won't be significant amounts of bacteria to support your fish waste.

  • @Gtrplyr1 Yes I now have more rock. By the way I never really had an ammonia problem not then and not now. I can't seem to keep feather dusters alive for some reason but that's a whole diffferent story lol.

  • Where are your rocks.

  • your tank looks like shit!

  • your tank sucks

  • rule is 1 pound of Rock for every gallon of water. So 50 pounds is just about right, 66 gallon tank but after sand and rock maybe only 50 gallons of water.. Need it to become a reef that is alive and filtering,

  • The weight of the aquarium will not increase much by adding life rock. Because where there is rock, there can't be water. Also when you are getting life rock don't think weight, think volume. Look for fresh big, light, poreus rocks with holes(the more surface, the better) because the amount of good bacteria on a rock is not how heayy the rock is but how much of the rock has contact with the water. Many people make that mistake.

  • @bartjeurissen Do you know name of the rock you're referring to? In which ocean is it found?

  • @vandit2k7

Any live rock will do it doesnt matter where it's from. It depends on what kind off rocks your store has to offer. Call them and ask when they get a fresh import and go look. My local store imports fiji, hawai, maurisius rock they all have different structure,shape,... but they all carry the bacteriaculture from the ocean, the rest is just for the eye. There are some who do it with dead rock and then add bacteriacultures from a capsule. I don't now but i prefer the real thing.

  • @bartjeurissen I understand, so you think I have like wrong rock or bad rock?

  • @vandit2k7

I don't know, what kind of rock is it? how old? 1 thing is certain you don't have enough of it.

1n There are to few bacteria to break down the waste of the fish because there is now place the bacteria can live/peopulate on. The skimmer alone can't keep up.

2 Your tang is(was) a territorial fish this means he needs a domain a place, cave, ... something to say this my place GET OUT otherwise he gets frustrated nervous and then he gets sick very easy.

  • @bartjeurissen I am actually not sure what type of rock I have I know I got it at the store but I only got 15 lbs or something very small amount. Is it appropriate to buy more cured rock from LFS and put it in tank when fish are already there? Or should I take fish out first? I know more you take fish out and put them back is like more stress on them.

  • @vandit2k7

I now have 27 kilo thats +- 55lbs i read that this is the minimum for marine tank. If i couldn't keep them elsewhere i would do it. If you want to make this tank a succes you have to. Note that your tank is going to go through a starting cycle again. this means you could have some fish losses and algea. Hmm what a beautiful hobby :) no worries it's going to be fine.

  • I must agree with ElTurco034 accept for throwing away rocks with aiptaisia. What a waste. I don't now but in my country life rock is expencive and It can be threated easely, i use hot vinegar but there are a lot of products that are reefsave. Chances are that when you buy new live rock or corals that they carry some aiptaisia ya can't throw them out.

  • @bartjeurissen Actually this is a second time mentioned aiptaisia. Can you actually explain what that is and why do I have it and how I got it?

  • @vandit2k7

Hey i havent seen it in your tank. Google it and look for pics it's very known, unharmful exept when you have seahorses. But it can become a pleage and take over the tank.

  • - Than start scaping your tank I suggest before putting rocks inside you try and play rocks outside for scaping.

    - After all done. Do not add any live stock but start running skimmer.

    - You must have bacteria culture to have the cycle as soon as possible I recommend brightwell microbacter7

    - Do not open lights for 2 weeks. In the 3rd week put hardy fish like chomis etc so that the nitrocyle starts. But check your parameters before that.

In short you need a month to have re-setup.

    hope it helps

  • @ElTurco034 Hi

Thank you for your input. Very much appreciate. You gave me a lot of information but I am not very clear as to what exactly is wrong with my tank and my set up. Is it my live rock that is bad? Is it the live sand that is bad? Please explain. Thank you for much input.

  • @vandit2k7 Regret none of them Seems like your tank has not enough live rock and probably your tank parameter like PO4, NO3 are too high. In other words there are not bacteria colonisation that will break down the nutrients. The redish alge is called cyano and it is fully dependent on nitro cycyle and tank parameters.

    brgds

  • @ElTurco034 ok I think I understand thank you. So basically you saying my bacteria cycle is not there? Is it because I don't have enough live rock or my live rock is wrong type?

  • @vandit2k7 Regret you do not have enough rock sand is not a problem as it seems enough as per video.

  • @ElTurco034 ok that is actually what I thought originally! Thank you. I know I do water change like big maybe 1/3 maybe 1/4 every two weeks and with each water change I put bacteria. I change water with tap de-chlorinated water. I use Red Sea salt mix. I have had some fish die for still uknown to me reason but I think I recognize the reason now. Some fish that you see right now I have had for much long time. Also I dont always run skimmer because it brings up heat much. Ah I know I have problems

  • @vandit2k7

I had the same challanges with RSM 250 without 24h running skimmer you can not go ahead it is risky. It ıs almost impossible to run a sea water aquarium without a skimmer. It is like the heart of the tank. For heat problem suggest you to buy a chiller.

why dont you join to Reef Sanctuary forums we have a club as red sea max owners. You can find many information there to guide you.

Just google it you will find the url.

  • @ElTurco034 That is great I will actually do that.

  • @ElTurco034

    Agree

Also the smale amount of good bacteria that are there, are now being neutralized by the uv lamp. So i would turn it off for now. What is you oppinion

The fact that you use tapwater also give the cyano's the upperhand because it's full of nutrients. you need ro or ionized water

  • @bartjeurissen hm yes I don't keep it on all the time but I had some outbreak of some disease and I had many fish die I don't know why I don't even know which disease it was I tried saving them but I was too late so after that I decided on uv lamp but I dont keep it on all the time. Although that is a good point in that it probably kills some necessary bacteria too.

  • - Take our the stock ceramics, never use them

    - Put one bag of stock active carbon ( but after a month take this out as well)

    - You must use RO water other wise your sucsess will be limited. Just seach for it they are not so that cheap look for the one not for the aquarium but the ones which are for making drinking water they are even less cheaper but must have RO function.

    - Than without putting rocks and sand inside prepare your saltwater in the tank this will ease salt mixing

  • - If you have aiptasia on your rock throw them away but if not again collect them in a bucket after rinsing and sucrubbing them. Keep circulation in the bucket till the new set up.

    - Buy around 20 kg of live rock from a reliable LFS( guess you have around 8 kgs already.

    - I do not know which country you live but at the end you look for plate shaped rocks and some others for scaping. But your criteria must be the most porous.

    - Rocks are important because they will be the filter of your aquarium.

  • Hi V;

First of all I would like you to tank you for the comments you had for my videos. Have seen that you have made a good investment but frankly not a good start up :(

Please let me some tips while you are just at the begining other wise you will probably lose all your life stock you are lucky that you do not have any corals yet.

-Now I strongly suggest you to give your good fish back to LFS

-Break down the tank set up. Keep the live arogonite live Sand in a bucket with new prepared salt.

  • I absolutely agree. I need more live rock to like fill the tank up. I am just concerned about the weight of that thing in the end. Yes I do use tap water but I do dechlorinator with Seachem and I use Red Sea salt mix.

  • hey

aah you lost the tang and the angel sorry to hear about it.

The uv will help but it's not going change the fact that the fish are stressed and easely get sick because they have no where to hide. (just trying to help)

Do u use tapwater for the tank?
