This version is pretty moving, especially with Brent's death a month later... you can kinda tell he's going downhill.. voice seems really hoarse here and in other concerts around this time
I always thought it was about the fall of man...Adam....ah but thank God we have the new Adam....Jesus Christ......May Jesus Christ bless all those connected to the Grateful Dead.
As much as it pains me to say this, but Jerry struggles just a bit too much, vocally, on this recording. Makes me yearn for the "Reckoning" version from 1980, which just destroys me.
China Doll is such a powerful song, the feeling of dropping something so dear to you, you're so nervous and then relieved that it's not destroyed but only slightly damaged... Is it an object or you're world?
I just remember the late 80's-early 90's and it fuckin jammed. Was in 10th grade back in 91, loved buckeye lake. @nd show ever but best in my life. I feel bad for all the kids that might have been my age at the time, yet never got to experience Jerry and the Dead. AFAIK, it made us all better people than we would have been.
What a great show and series of shows, all the gigs were good and the crowd fantastic. There was such a great atmosphere, like nothing else.I was luck enough to go to all these shows at shoreline with aussie friends new to the dead i had dragged in from everywhere i could find them. We all had a ball and followed them in Europe the next year. The car park was nearly as good believe me. Thanks for posting some great times from the band and me and good friends.

Great video! Yes, Jerry's wasted, but still great playing, and very soulful singing. ANd hey, we all make mistakes, right? I remember one concert when Bobby forgot some of the words to "Man Smart," and the audience filled them in with glee! Thanks, Duanebase:)
brent died a month later...this is probably one of the best versions (on youtube) and available to the non-taping public...captures all of the nuances of the band...missed notes, missed lyrics, total improv, who gives a f***...it's classic
This captures everything...The Imperfect Perfection of Jerry....Thank You Jerry & God Bless...what you have shared with all of us will travel forever in our Spirits!...Many Souls you have touched deep within and made a difference in our Lives.mw
I just learned that hurdy-gurdy is a musical instrument that (if its large )require two people to play it. one too turn the crank and the other to strum. So in my opinion, the line "if you can abide it, let the hurdy-gurdy play", shows guilt. As if to say, I'm sorry that I wasnt there for you when it really mattered to help you through (sound like box of rain, ha) before you killed yourself.
What does "CHINA CAT SUNFLOWER?" mean for you, sounds like some kind of trip report. Thanks B
This song always helps me when im hurting. I always pictured a slowly moving doll that was falling with the song. At the end of the song, the cresendo (i think thats the word) picks up as the doll hits the floor. Dont worry whatever problem your having its not as bad as you think it is. It is only fractured. It can be fixed. Hope I didnt ruin this song for others that like it. I miss you Morgan and Uncle Chris.
i actually think i was at this very show, my first...a few days shy of my 14th birthday. thanks for posting such a good quality video that truly captures this beautiful song.
Unreal and I know Jerry forgot words to songs often but..think sometimes it was like at 4:35... "Yesterday I begged you" instead of 'I would not condemn you' but like that verse is all about 'Failing'.. and it won't Die...mmmmm

Brent is the China Doll here....he would be gone in a month. Jerry seems pretty high right there.
