it may not over heat but you can fry circuits in the hard drive cause I play for 12 and 16 hours a day no lie and mine had fried a circuit in either the mother board or the HDD that's what Sony said I should have it back soon I played allot left it on over night plus I think cause it does not have much space around it so yeah sorry but it can over heat in a way

listen just get a couple of regular house fans.I have my ps3 vertically, I have one fan facing the bottom side of the PS3(it blows sir against the bottom of the system and also blow that hot air that is coming out of the back away from the system.)The other is facing the usb and power switch(it blows air into that small vent going into the system.) Also have a Intec air cooler on the back and raised the PS3 about a inch putting DVD under it letting the air go underneat it where the harddrive is.

k just to clear things up. The ps3 will be that loud if you abuse it like that(plus he had the mic on the fan). The reason for it is that the fans idle when in normal play to increase life. When hot (like 230*) they speed up for more cooling. If u saw the grafix card cut out thats the ps3 saving itself from melting cause god knows u dumb asses wont save it. If u want something to melt get a 360.

This is true. At one point I had my PS3 in a confined space (Ikea tv cabinet with glass doors) so when I played games and left the door closed the surrounding air would heat up and the higher fan speeds would kick in to protect itself. It IS a PS3. Look at the chrome refelectlion near the drive slot. Obviously you need to get your eyes checked.

Also PS2 doesn't even use slot loading drives unless you count the PSX (that media centre version of the PS2 not the original PlayStation)) Fat PS2s use a tray and slim PS2s are top loading.

The reason why systems overheat and break is because of the way people handle them, if you bang your 360 around it will break, if you put a 360/ps3 in a small space it both will overheat.  its the owners fault if the system breaks beyond repair. Not microsofts/sony's.

Thats the best part about why the PS3 is durable- it pushes out tons of heat, better than a vacuum becuase it usually never has the need to get up to such a high temperature. With the vents blocked it can probably easily just speed up the fans to compensate- The fan of the PS3 is HUGE. I never heard of there being more than just 1- See the bottom rectanble thing? That is the entire fan.
