I used to love Abbie Hoffman and romanticized the 60's alot but all one has to do is take a look at what's been built around us. The police are militarized, the prisons are privatized, the government is bought, and it was their generation that sold us out. That peace and love shit won't accomplish anything. Violent revolution is the only way out. They really thought getting high and having orgies set them apart from the establishment, they fell right into their trap, fucking fools!

There were young people in the 60' who didn't “get it”. Brainwashed by their parents, church, school and society. They believed everything they were told, never question and never rebelled - they had no balls. They also never got laid because all of the really fine chicks were freaks. I agree with a lot of what Hoffman and the Yippies were trying to do, but honestly, he just seems like a bit of a dick and his tactics were never going to be treated seriously. Face the facts, if everyone became a Yippie the world would have turned to shit. Plus some of their tactics, like Hoffman's rant in the middle of The Who's set at Woodstock was just ridiculous in it's timing and place - no wonder Pete Townshend whacked him with his guitar.

"Revolution For The Hell of It", and "Steal This Book" provoked many of my younger years, and his words still resonate.

What's interesting to think about is that this video was shot a few months BEFORE the '68 Democratic convention, and puts all of the Mayor Daley vs The Chicago Seven stuff in a bit of perspective.

P.S. Eldredge Cleaver was also a Presidential candidate on the ballot that year.

At least in this fashion there exists a form of constructive unification :):) Those of us who respect Abbie Hoffman should keep him alive through spreading knowledge and understanding of what he believed in. It is the very ideals he held that can help heal this country of its otherwise corrupt and suppressive tendencies.

What we really need is a 60's type "movement". here & NOW. Weather it would accomplish anything, I don't know. I do now that it would have a better chance than doing virtually nothing, like now. Unfortunately, due to the over-emasculation & pussification of the population, I don't think enough (not all) people have the balls for mass protests & movements, like they did in the 60's. Also, people are more materialistic, lazy & greedy & due to communications technology, less social.

@SeattleLA But maybe my opinion is a bit off. Look at what's happened since? The Occupy Wall St. protests. Granted they aren't on the same level/size as the 60's protests, but it's a start. As more and more people lose their jobs, homes, savings, etc, (and you can bet they will) to corporate & government corruption,greed & malfeasance, etc, you may see more & larger protests. If/when that happens, with 1 exception (the rich get richer....) I am not sure what the ultimate outcome will be.

The point I made about your comment was a lot about the materialism and greed of today, hindering anyone's attempt to spearhead a vital movement. Yet, something can and should be done and very soon. @gjc82071 What you have said is very intelligent and especially true (although unfortunate). I think our technology definitely has a lot to do with the lack of will that is so predominant today. The need to seek out interpersonal interactions is becoming obsolete, since communication is so readily available through electronics. Sadly, I believe that this, intern, causes an almost fear-like response to the social intercommunication needed to take a stand for what was once so important to so many.
