  • Goju ryu eh muito mais antigo que esse negocio de mma... e altamente mais efetivo em combate!!!

  • Geksai's basic is not there. High block is too high, Sanchin stand is not there, lower stand is also not there... Side blocks are too "over".

  • nice :D

  • the 2 combos after 2:18 are my favorite because i have a big body and i know i can perform them with a lot of kimi

  • To all that criticize the bunkai: Kata bunkai are NOT absolute, meaning there is but ONE application. The originators developed a kata based on an experience or a vision. From there, they applied techniques as they were applicable yet keeping the original as a base. That means kata become conceptual, any tactically logical event can occur that meets combative reality. Reality to combat is a key for growth.

  • I am looking to take up a martial art and (being a mma fan) would never consider Karate, you're video has changed my mind, I will be checking out my local dojo.

    thanks

  • @TheRockwarable

You're most welcome. Good luck and thankyou. :-)

  • Our Sensei let us try Gekisai Dai Ichi the other week because it was Christmas, it was tough. Favourite part was front kick into rising elbow, backfist and finishing off with a punch but we didn't do the knife hand.

Can you tell me if you adopt any of that old okinawa conditioning training, if not have you have thought about it.

Good work chaps, don't listen to the narrow minded people who have obviously watched the Rocky box set recently.!!

  • @waterboy438

Thanks waterboy438. I can't see where there's a knife hand in Gekisai dai Ichi. There are no open hand techniques until the next kata ,Gekisai dai Ni. If you search through some of our other videos you may see some conditioning.

  • @fumikomgeri I'm sure he's talking about the sweeping arm just after the gyaku-tzuki

  • The song fits sooo bad to the film!

  • i make goju ryu too...and i have to say that the white belts at the beginning are better than the black one's if you watch the grade^^

  • I'm a Kyokushin karateka and I have to say Goju Ryu has some beatiful and technical Kata's

  • When you're tired of karate, you're tired of life.Osu, from an Isshinryu student! (We're family,as you probably know;-))

  • Now you see me There at 2.55 should of shone an arm brake there

    Peace

  • ahh hard to read in the begginning i started out good but gave p..lol other than that cool video

  • I Train in Goju Ryu myself and I am astounded at how much intellectual masturbating is on this comments page! So many people trying to assert their own ego's, trying to appear wise and hard-ass. As martial artists we are meant to master ourselves. I thought the video was great. Sure, technique isn't perfect at times but who's is? I am also impressed by Fumikomgeri's humble and assertive responses to inflammatory comments left on this page.

    Much respect to you.

    Osu!

  • @101wrenth

Thanks very much.Sorry about taking a long time in answering. just got back from Holidays, computers been playing up plus still probs with MovieMaker. Many people are completely missing the point ref our vids. They're there for people to use, modify or discard. We aren't trying to show how fast, strong, tough, technical or macho we are, there are more than enough doing that already. Ah,well keep calm and carry on.

    Thanks again, Cheers

  • @101wrenth wrenth? form and breathe. try with speed

  • @101wrenth all that and then say the mans tech. sucks.Just because you put it politely doesnt make it not a pissing contest .hipocrit

  • @tricirlin I never said anyone's tech sucked. I said at times it isn't perfect. My technique isn't perfect. I don't know anyone who's technique is perfect, except maybe the masters and even the masters are constantly trying to improve their karate. My point was no-one's technique is perfect. I don't think that makes me a hypocrite, but you're entitled to your opinion.

  • Great video, good hard training

  • Whats the song?

  • @snakecycle

Sorry,I can't remember snakecycle,There were problems with copyright on my original choice"EasyLivin",so I chose this from Youtubes "Audioswap" 'cos it was the first one that was similar length to the vid. Cheers 5

  • shame that from 1;46 they are not punching at the opponent but anticipating the block.

  • @rgreggus

Well spotted. We'll try our best to improve, thanks for your comment.

  • spock103: simultaneous migi chudan uchi uke and hidari chudan yoko uke. kata is simultaneous movement, bunkai is "quick one two to floating ribs/ kidney area, depending on which direction opponent is facing.

  • what was the technique at 0:46? I have never seen or practiced that in the first basic battle...

  • @Spock103

That's Shuto from GEKISAI DAI ICHI the first kata learned in IOGKF Goju Ryu. We hope to have a couple of bunkai using this technique on our next video.:-)

  • Also there is little to no hip movment in the strikes which means your not generating good power.

  • @mikewills86

O.k. mike, fair enough.Could I draw your attention to my answers to others who similarly commented (e.g. Jacper60).The highest grade in this vid is 2nd kyu and this vid is 2 years old( where does the time go). No excuses on our part though. your comment(s) are valid, and thanks.:-)

P.S. I've tried 3 times to post an answer, hope this one gets through.

  • @mikewills86 Hip movement should be a normal function of body mechanics. As students and teachers learn they will become aware of the importance of hip use and how it is used best if their general work is focused on natural power generation. The hip use contrived by the JKA is excessive and unnatural. It is a good development tool, a good hip loosening tool but can not be used in combat at the level of rotation they advocate. Natural use will be a sharp but small amplitude rotation.

  • just a general comments ;) i ma 2nd dan in goju ryu, the stances and body posture even for the higher grades in the kata at the first part of the video are poor :(

  • Enjoyed the video. I run my school in West Virginia and also a member of I.O.G.K.F

  • @pcmbabe IOGKF,eh! Where in WV and does your club have a website?

  • awesome!!

  • i think you should focus a bit more on the foot work of karate... take exemple on shotokan or kyokushin fighters. You will see that the foot work is important to develope the a strong position. Im thinking of you kiba dashi or your zenkutsu dachi(i think you should do it more lower). i hope you will correct that and im sorry for my bad spelling im not realy good in english :D

  • @Jacper60

Thanks for that comment Jacper60. As I've said before, our videos aren't to show

how good we are, or to show technical perfection. Just sharing ideas on drills, training & bunkai etc.We try and show what may happen when situations "kick off" and effectiveness is worth more than looking good. However, we should expect criticism if we show vids on Youtube shouldn't we? As long as it's not abusive & people are trying to help, no problem:-)

    Nothing wrong with your English,mate:-))

  • @fumikomgeri well isayed this because i wanted to tell it to you so you could perfect some movements^^

    regards

  • poor video, poor quality martial arts

  • @mikewills86

Thanks mike. Perhaps you can verbally(verbally means, in words) describe GOOD video and GOOD quality Martial Arts? Better still, demonstrate either or both? Thanks again:-)

  • just a comment from another general karateka...many of the wrists from the students were bent (in all ranks), which is dangerous when punching something hard. The wrist will collapse if it's bent even slightly. That was a big problem i had until I started punching a bag.

    Just something to help out.

  • @and2premiere

Thanks for that, and you're quite right.

However, this vid is nearly 2 years old and there's been some improvment.

Our vids are NOT demonstrations of how things should be done.We are just passing on how we train and some ideas on bunkai, which you can use or discard as you wish.Hopefully, it will spark ideas of you own.

  • Yeah, it was good stuff. I'm really interested in goju. Sorry if i sounded too critical. I'm the type of person that loves feedback good or bad, so that improvement can happen. I guess i shouldn't assume other people want that .

    Thanks.

  • @and2premiere 27/2/10

Your criticism was valid and I don't mind that at all. It gets up my nose a bit when other "critics" just write something like "That was rubbish" without saying why.You didn't, no problem :-)

  • Okay, thanks :] But I'm sure i said the right things, because my Sensei always tell's us why should we do this way and not that way and shows us the difference. I'm glad that I've helped you too

  • I'm sorry if i made some grammar mistakes, because I'm still young and learning english. In Lithuania we dont talk in English often, so please dont be mad if you didn't understand some words

  • @Surv0l

You've nothing to apologise for regarding your English Surv0I,you're doing your best and that's good enough for me.I'm not upset (mad) at all:-)

  • Oh, and I forgot one more thing. In the giksai-dai-ichi kata, you are lifting too much. You need to try to keep your hight still. In shikodachi you need to get just a little bit up, not jump and get your legs straight. Try to keep your hight the same in all the kata, then when you are done at the end slowly straight your legs

  • In gekisai-dai-ichi kata you've made some mistakes. We in Lithuania do it differently. First of all, you rush too much. You need to do every move fast and with strenght, but with short brakes. Every move has to be perfect. If you rush too much with blocks or counter-attacks in a kata, you will mix everything up and it will be a failure. When i watched you do it, i saw, that you we're standing not the right way. Your standing in the second move was too long, you need to do it basicly.

  • @Surv01

I never realised I was making so many mistakes.Thank you so much for your comment and advice.I'll try to apply your

recommendations in future. Are you in any Goju-Ryu organisation?

  • @fumikomgeri Well tecnacly no. I am learning aswell in okinawa Goju-Ryu karate as a student, but I'm not a sensei. My sensei's name is Aivaras Engelaitis from Lithuania 5 dan and he is doing everything right. When i try it your way i fall and lose my balance. My Sensei is a great teacher. There Youtube channel is: Linaiwa, and from what I know so named the mistakes. when i started Karate i never thought it will help me so much. I now have over 40 of variations how to defend my self the correct

  • The correct way. Anyway, I hope i helped you. In karate the most inportant things are standing, movements and the hit. Your hits are too fast, you need to consentrate on every hit and do it with all your strength. Do the move quickly but there needs to be short breaks besides the move. Thank you for asking.

  • @Surv0I 7/2/2010

Can I refer you to the comments of pointblank87(6 months ago),kejaan(6 months ago), DocLoony (1 year ago) and my reply to DocLoony. There are also other comments about this subject around this time period:)

  • i must say i am myself a shodan ho, correct my spelling, my certificate hangs in my bedroom. but you guys and very slopy and dont demonstrate proper training at all. it should be painfull baby! get serious and demonstrate proper form and technique in all the movements. i can tell because it shows in your students,,,

  • @0316199003161990

Many thanks for your comment,it's much appreciated.I'll convey your opinion to the lads, I'm sure they'll appreciate it as well. Sadly, their reciprocal comments will never be known.

Shodan,eh! Well done old chap, well done.

  • get real that gus a fot slob

  • @stevenJEDI3

"get real that gus a fot slob"

    Is that Australian spelling stevenJEDI3?

How sad it is to see how standards have slipped in the colonies. At least the "fot slob" is training so give him some credit.

  • song plz?

  • i like

  • You don't need a pretty and decorated dojo. People used to train in their teacher's house or in the fields. All you need is space so you can move around and a good teacher.

  • You see both in Okinawa. Some dojo are very plain inside, others have some ornate Shinto, Chinese or other Okinawan artifacts in them. Hey its their dojo, they can do what they want with it.

  • @zBloodD3monz Exactly! My father is my sensei (hes a 5th dan in traditional goju ryu) and so we transformed our garage into our dojo.

And I just realized Im am replying to a post made one year ago but it doesent matter

  • Wow, that last clips were brutal, and that guys are trained to "play" hard. I think that some of this can be usefuly in some situations, I mean, martial arts are pure discipline and really hard work, but maybe two or three thinks can be used in an emergency without the training.

  • whats the music called?

  • 9Nov09

Sorry,I can't remember aquaquad7,There were problems with copyright on my original choice"EasyLivin",anyway, I used this from Youtubes "Audioswap" 'cos it was the first one that was similar length to the vid. Cheers

  • all i can say is pure ownage =P

  • 2Nov09

    Er...is "ownage" a good thing frogsplash605?

  • Yes it is fumikomgeri. Completely.

  • its known as a simple chudan block, used to block punges aimed in the general torsoe area. but if the user is well conditioned and strong it can also hurt and disable an opponent.

  • Am I seeing outside blocks with the thumb side of the wrist on the outside? or is that some other move? right at 0:37, I dont get that at all. is that some kind of strike?

  • 4Oct09

In this case it's represented as a "block".

This is "the" basic kata of the IOGKF consequently the moves are very basic.

However,as you suggest,it can definitely be a strike or converted into a further technique.

  • thanks, I guess I am just used to using the other side. Some styles teach you to strike on that side and hit a nerve cluster, if you roll something hard along the bone you will feel it.

  • Thanks for the video.

  • i like this video thanks

what i don't like is people some not all of the

MMA brand just rideing the one discipline

exploring other Disciplines in turn make yourself better,Rounded and more open minded thats why i train in everything i can

  • the best is kyokushinkai of masutatsu oyama

  • I wouldnt say its best. Its probbably the most physical

  • There is one major flaw in what they do. They come up and down in their movements way to much. You almost always stay one level in your movements.

  • i don't understand this comment at all..?

The Kata uses different stances, therefore the level will be different during the Kata. You cannot stay at the same level in shiko dachi as in sanchin dachi or han zenkutsu dachi etc..

Where they move in the same stance, sanchin to sanchin for instance or in Seiyunchin Kata from shiko to shiko then the level remains the same..

  • blocking and then countering is to slow, better is to block and counter simoultanesly. in my opinion on of the disadvantages in Karate

  • 15July09

You're right Bellavista2,block then counter is slow, this is called "Go no Sen".Block & counter simultaneously is faster this is

    "Sen no Sen".

Faster still is a pre-emptive strike i.e.hit them first, this is "Sen Sen no Sen".

All these techniques should be in your karate training, this would remove the disadvantages you mention. Cheers and thanks for your comment.

  • depends on your teacher, if you watch real japanese clubs do it it differs too, they block and counter simultanously, the really good ones even counter before they even have to fully block so yeah, it's not a karate flaw more like a teachers mistake

  • You have to remember that Kata is for practice and movement is meant to be shown and distinctive. So too are the bunkai.

  • very well, but you are doing guekisai dai ichi very very fast. try to do it slowly, try to feel the moves.

keep training goju ryu. the most ancient form of karate

    cumps from portugal

  • 7July09

Thanks extreme100rpd. However, I must disagree ref the speed of gekisai, still, each to his own.

  • The speed is as taught at just about every Goju Training Course, Grading, Congress and Gasshuku I've ever attended. Standardisation in Goju is very precise. Sensei Higoanna travels (and sends Senior Instructors) the world over many times a year to reinforce standards.

Sensei's Barker, Noble and Robins train with Sensei Andrews and other Chief Instructors on a regular basis, as do many of the Sheffield lads and lasses.

Nobody's Kata is perfect, but theirs is certainly not too fast.

  • but too unprecise, for them it is too fast, their foot movement becomes sloppy because of the speed

  • Good work!

    Greetings from Sweden

  • 7July09

Thanks piffidan. I'll be in Sweden at the end of this month, at Boson. Will you be there?

  • aww, sorry. I live in stockholm and work is killing me right now...

  • terrible song for this video!!

  • Goju meaning Hard and Ryu meaning soft. Goju ryu can teach you alot! about fighting on the streets. and its 50-50 a standing up/ on the ground art. so alot of things are covered. but like all martial artists. Goju-Ryu to be efective needs a well conditioned person so the workout is extremely hard. but after awhile you get used to it.

  • that is so true I'm a black belt in goju ryu when I first started I thought I would die from the workout I've past out thrown up but got use to it it's a good system and if nobody throws up it's not a good class lol

  • ha, yea. i know :)

  • "Go" = hard "Ju" = soft "Ryu" = school/system/way

  • go = hard

    ju = soft

    ryu = organization (School).

  • really good, thanks for putting this on.

  • Fabulous!!!!

  • one word, or ...eh - 2:31 there

  • 6May09

    Thanks(I think) fanvanice.

    And the word is......??

  • Sry! I think that the move at 2:31 was awesome!!!

  • nice video!

  • I practice shorin ryu with lineage to chotoku kyan. Nice post with a progression of a simple bunkai in go no sen timing. May want to add some sen no sen and sen sen no sen timing next time. Happy Training!

  • Very informative. Thanks for sharing.

  • The first Kata shown with the group is what i'm learning now. it's good to see so i can practice it outside of the dojo

  • man, that was a brutal throw. i will learn that later i hope. lol. i am a 10th kyu in goju ryu

  • Nice good solid karate

  • hi fumikomgeri..

I could only perform the mae-geri kick and the kansetsugeri.

  • milonyik is my brother user ID my real ID is cassavaeater. ;)

  • @fumikomgeri..

    thanks, fumiko

I still learn the hand stroke or 'tei' from the many sources. since I got that broken hips I cannot able to make a kick anymore. I had a great side kick ;(

  • Whoah!Steady on, milonyik, I'm getting confused now as to who is who. Good to hear you're still training in some way.I shouldn't worry to much about the kicks, keep 'em low if you can kick at all. Are you able to use kansetsugeri, fumikomigeri or hizageri? If so they could be as effective, though you'd need to be closer in of course. You seem like a bloke who won't give up easily,so I'm sure you can work something out.Good luck to you.

    With respect, fumikomigeri

  • I used to learn the Goju Ryu Karatedo and my rank was 1st kyu. I never do that again since I got a broken hips.

    It refreshing my mind.

  • Hiya cassavaeater,

It's a pity about your hip,was that through Goju Ryu? Glad you like the videos, many thanks.

  • Nice demo of clean, no-frills techinque with emphasis on accuracy as well as speed and power. Well done, mates!

    Liam Jackson

  • que karate mais fraco!!

  • I'm sorry celo3dan I don't understand Brazilian Portuguese. However,I think fraco means weak? Could you translate into English, please? Then I can reply properly in a mannerly fashion.Thank you

  • Good techniques, speed and power - I like it!

    Regards tom

  • We need more videos like this. Thanks so much.

  • Thanks for this vid. I like your practical approach & sense of humor :o). I think you guys could work on a sharper (=precise) execution of Kata... just a comment, no offence.

The first move of Gecki Sai is forward in the kata, and this can lead to very interesting applications, too (you showed backward/evasive movement in your bunkai, which is of course possible).

I'm looking for more of your vids now !

  • Hi DocLoony,

No offence taken at all.The kata could be sharper, admitted and doubtless if we'd done a lot more takes it could have appeared flawless. However, time was getting on,and we weren't giving a competition demo. The bunkai shown is the "standard" bunkai taught to all I.O.G.K.F. members. I thought the little "scenario" showed quite a bit of forward movement, one has to be careful because the bloke has to go to work the next day. Many thanks for your comment Doc. Hope you like the other vids.

  • "The first move of Gecki Sai is forward in the kata"

Sorry, but it isn't. All Goju Kata start with a defensive move, except in the 'Attack' side of Chokusen (sp) Gekisai Dai. The first movement in Gekisai is a turn to the left, pivoting on the left foot whilst the right foot moves BACK. Clearly a defensive move.

Karate Ni Sente Nashi - In Karate there exists no first attack.. basic principles.

Regards to all at Sheffield Dojo from one of Sensei George's students.

    arrigato gosai mas..

  • haha.."built like a brick shithouse"..my grandmother used to say that. good stuff

  • Well i do japenese ju jutsu and i wanted to take up karate to get aq bit of variety. Thanks for posting this, i am sure i will start doing this form and style

  • Hiya Zeus, if you look on the i.o.g.k.f. w/bsite we have branches in Oz that maybe of use to you.Although I appreciate it's a gigantic country!

  • The Elders kick some ass move well with speed I like it.

    Renshi Fookes

  • nice vid i also do this goju ryu karate in new zealand it's very good and not only can you learn self defence but you also get fitness too

  • nice stuff guys! as you may know GKR is part from Goju-Ryu and I particularly enjoy the Goju element and their Kata.

  • Nice music ;).

Exellent demomnstration. Your black belt practicioners are impressive.

  • This is a very good video. It left me with a taste for more. Keep up the good work.

    From Shorin Ryu Shido Kan

  • excellent material for lovers of Goju Ryu karate do.

    thanks for sharing,

    Patricio - Chile

  • Thank you for sharing this information with me and others, God bless to you and our Goju-Ryu family.
