It looks kind of like they're seeing how jumping spiders respond to live and dead prey. Some crickets were live, and others were dangled by a string/wire/something. I guess the question the experiment posed is if jumping spiders can tell whether a creature is alive or not if it's moving?

In the experiment, the time between placing the cricket in the container and the spider's pounce could be anywhere from 4 to 7 minutes, so it was satisfying when they finally jumped for it. I cut the video to show only the attacks, and only realized afterward that we said "yes" every time.

These dead crickets are part of a control group to make sure that the spiders would eat dead crickets all the time. Crickets will later be injected with a compound that is the real basis of the experiment, to test on the salticidae.
