If I am using braid while tageting pike, do i need a leader? and if so, can i just tie a wire one on or what? I am fairly new to braid and eagar to learn more. Thanks!
The rods are designed differently yes, the visual indicators are the trigger handle and the first eye being much smaller on a bait casting rod... Yes, you can use a spinning rod if you want to but keep in mind its not meant for that purpose. Spinning rods are designed for eye resistance & bait casting rods are designed for backbone resistance.
hey nick please respond im going to order a shimano citica with 8 and 6 lb fluro and was wondering what settings should i put it on to cast like zoom trick worms far im also getting a carrot stick 7 ft mh with micro guides or use my older bait caster rod i just want a bait casting reel to cast soft plastics far because i have seen people cast a texas rigged trick worm farther than i cast a rattle trap PLEASE LOOK ANY one i need a good bait casting reel to cast a weight less worm please help
I only use spinning tackle for weightless worms unless I nail weight them. The reason for this is casting distance & light line. Baitcasting outfits are not designed for finesse presentations like wacky rigging or dead sticking. You can use larger soft plastics like brush hogs and 8" worms just fine by backing off of your spool tension as much as possible and just using the break. Revo reels for the money cast about the best next to curados in the mid price range.
for a baitcast reel u want a little thicker line u want 12lb test + baitcast dont do very good with thin line and the settings on ur baitcast if u want rly far casting distance u want ur knob to be loose and u want ur breaking system pretty low so i would say 8or 7 on the dial with those settings u should be able to cast trick worms fine.
Hey, quick question, I have my eye either on the Shimano Clarus 6'6 8-17 medium lb rod or the 10-20 lb mh rod, Also have my eye on the Shimano citica, 8/10/14 lb, would that be the reel I would use for both rods? I really want to make the perfect match
The MH would be more versatile. If you need to fish heavy line you can use braid in a smaller diameter with a leader that citica will fish it just fine...
@InformativeFisherman Thanks for the advice, i've ordered my reel, i've noticed that some brands of rods in the MH category are1/4-3/4 oz lure weight, and some are 3/8-1oz, which do you think would be best for worms n jigs n what not, im thinking the 3/8-1 oz, since a weightless 5" senko weighs a little more then 3/8 ..any suggestions?
@InformativeFisherman thanks, sorry for all the questions, would it still be possible to cast lighter lures on a rod like that? ones that are less then 3/8 oz, im sure its possible, but performance wise would it be terrible, i know there is no "all around" bass rod but im trying to pick the most versatile one
Hey Nick, i'm gonna be picking up a baitcasting reel and rod for bass fishing and was wondering what you recommend for bank fishing. i'll use alot of plastic worms. what power rod do you recommend and what line ratio baitcaster reel? thanks in advance
There really is no better one overall as they both serve completely different purposes. Spinning rods offer great sensitivity and the ability to fish very light line and lures. Bait casting rods offer power and control over the fish. It comes down to lure and line weight most of the time. For casting accuracy bait casting gear I feel is the better overall choice. When it comes to distance I would go with spinning gear. You can't unscrew a Phillips with a Flat-head that's why you need both...
Try to think of bait casting rods and reel as power tools. Spinning rods and reels lack the power to control the fish away from hazards and to present a bait as accurately.

Hey I love your videos. I just got a new baitcaster and I was wondering if it is one you recognize. It is a bass pro shop catmaxx baitcast rod and reel combo
@InformativeFisherman ok, I've been watching a lot of these instructional videos and I am so upset that I still can't figure out what really is the main difference between the spool adjustment and break. So the Spool knob adjusts the tightness of the spool right so the lure won't drop and the break makes sure there's no backlash. However, they both prevent backlash and to me they also help slow down the lure so what is the point of having either one of them. Convince me, good.
@InformativeFisherman hold on, when I have a heavier lure, don't I turn the break less or more. One of the other videos said the heavier the lure, the less and vice versa which I think also makes sense since the lighter the lure, the more anglers tend to power up the cast causing more blacklash so it needs more break. But you explain, please.

no i was not attempting to be rude.... i graduated medical school a few months ago and have just started my training as a doctor. i've noticed myself focusing on things that wouldn't be considered normal. i've seen your hands shake quite a bit so in my head i just started throwing out possible differential diagnoses and was curious if i was heading in the right direction. i did not mean to offend you.
ps. i'm a new fisherman and i LOVE your vids. Thanks!
You adjust your spoon tension with your brakes off!!! And no a slow fall does not mean it's perfect, the lure should fall slowly until it hits the water then stop.
Also as a beginner with a bait caster, you are better off learning how to cast with NO BRAKES. This is how you master thumb pressure, and become the best caster you can be. It will also help you battle the winds when there kicking.
P.S. I have been throwing bait casters for 20 years.
hi i have a Okuma Alumina AL-200 Low Profile Baitcasting Reel and im trying to get the longest cast with a rapala x rap. how can i get it casting further what sitting do you recommend on setting the centrifugal braking system. thanks
what baitcaster do you recommend for someone who is just getting started with one with a max price of $120 i want to invest in a good quality reliable shimano or diawa but i dont have the money
Bass Pro Shops Megacast combo is 50 bucks, but for 50 bucks it is really good quality. It is essentially the same exactly reel and rod as their Tourney Special. It has magnetic brakes on it and I have mine set a 9 out of 10 and even with a high setting like that it still casts really far. Also, it has 4 ball bearings and it is very smooth. I recommend it for anyone.
how do you cast really light lures with heavier line on a baitcaster? say a weightless senko with 17lbs flourocarbon like the pros do? i have tried doing this multiple times with my quantum reel and my carrot stick... any recomendations?
If the lure does not drop slowly when you back off on the spool tension then you will have a very tough time casting it. This is when a $400 bait casting outfit really comes into play. Most affordable bait casting reels do not cast very light plastics well. That is why you will still see a lot of guys pitching them on spinning reels I know I do... Hit me up on the help line for more info.. (719) 285-4247
When I was little I didn't know how to cast a baitcast reel... I didn't know that line release button was there I thought pushed on the line on the spool to release it so I was trying to cast and it wouldn't cast ... I got a huge rats nest but that was when I was little ... lol
Im sorry, but youre wrong! The braking system is to prevent backlashes during casting. Only the spool tension knob, not the brake, has anything to do with how fast the lure falls to the ground. When you cast, the lure is at its fastest as soon as it leaves the rod, but the farther it goes, air friction and wind slow it down. The brakes are there to slow the spool near the same rate as the lure to prevent backlash. As soon as the lure hits the water the spool tension stops the spool from turning.
It does matter when it comes to lure presentation & water clarity tied in with sensitivity. If you are a beginner I would use 12lb mono due to it's all around ability to fish well..
Dude GREAT TIPS.. EVERYBODY tells you how to cast but I HAVENT SEEN ANYBODY explain in detail like you have the THREE parts that must be adjusted.. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your presentation.. Especially ADJUSTING THE BREAKS.. never knew how important that was.. thanks again.. do you have any videos on CASTING???
Awesome video! I've been bass fishing since I was thirteen. At forty, I'm just getting started with the baitcasting. I've invested in BAITCASTING COMBOS and scene in your video. I have a Shimano 6'6" Ojourn with a reel that has two bearings. Is that good or bad? I've also purchaced a Pflueger combo that doesn't have the magnetic drag. Was this Pflueger combo and bum steer or what? Should I get my money back or exchange it?
I'm going to Castaic Lake this weekend. Have you fished there before? I haven't stepped foot there since 1979! Thirty-one years later, I'm ready to add to my pot with the five trout I've caught at a near by rec park. I'm picking up a new reel in Friday to slap on my ugly stik. Can't wait to put it all through the test at a REAL LAKE! HOWEVER, I'm still having problems with baitcasting. I spend more time clearing out birds next than I am trying to catch fish!
Well, I don't have a problem clearing them but it's hard to believe that you can straighten them out just by cranking the reel over and over. I just pull out the kinks and reel in the slack.
hey im new to baitcasters and i got a $70 shimano and it comes with the easy mag just like that red one you got it also comes with a cast controll i was wondering if you could tell me how to set up its a med action thank you and message me back
Hey Kingestac, is that Shimano at two piece? If so, we've bought the same Rod and Reel combo. Is it a "OJOURN"? I've paid $52.00 for mine but it was on clearance. Well, have you had any luck with it? Like my cousin taught me; you're only as good as your equipment. I've also bought a Pflueger baitcasting combo for about $60.00 at Sports Chalet. The reel sucks because I have to take off the cover to adjust the brake mag.
Hey Nick, at 42 years old I just moved to live on the beach in Far North Queensland Australia. I am 80 steps from where I am typing this to the water. I bought 2 combos (egg beater type) and am simply searching for rig setups and info in general. It's great to see a clip shot indoors not on a boat and by a bloke not wearing a hat. I have no idea what a pitch & flip is but I just wanted you to know I have subscribed and appreciate the effort I have seen you put into your clips. Thanks mate.
thanks for the good info i always said i never would get a baitcaster but now that i know more about them i'm gonna buy one, but i have just one question are they only use for bass fishing?
i just got my first baitcast reel, and it is missing the tension knob. It doesn't cast far at all and makes a screeching noise when i try to cast it. Can anybody explain how/if they are related?
this week i am buying an abu garcia revo s and from what ive heard it is an amzing reel, especially for the price, but some people were saying that it doesnt have a braking system, only the spool tension knob. in some reviews people were saying that it doesnt matter. what do you think?
Is a browning maxus a good reel on a st.croix bass mojo because i am new to bass fishing and felt like getting something good at first but i am not new to fishing.
Vs the Midas the maxus is a great deal the drag is the only down fall being 10lb vs 12lb & the line cap is 5ard differ but other wise its the same in my eyes so yeah its good,,, What length & build is your mojo stick? A medium speed baitcaster is always best when getting started with a 6'6" rod med action...
I didnt know what was so diffrent about a bait casting and a spinning one but this video defintely helped me out. I saw the pros using them all the pros using them all the time and u really informed me.But this was a really good video i put it into my favorites. Thanks
Wow, now that was awesome. Im a total newbie to fishing. Tried it 2 weeks ago and now im hooked (no pun intended). Your videos are extremely helpful. Thanks

and if so lets say that you want to carolina rig.would you recommend a spinning reel?
randomvidsbykevin 1 year ago
@randomvidsbykevin baitcasters are preferred for heavier lures/baits and spinning reels are preferred for the lighter lures.

Any good settings for flipping and pitching? I have my spool tension knob slightly loose so the lure falls pretty fast, but when i flip it backlashes

I recommend it for anyone.

i have that shimano reel its such a nice reel good for crankbaits

how do you cast really light lures with heavier line on a baitcaster? say a weightless senko with 17lbs flourocarbon like the pros do? i have tried doing this multiple times with my quantum reel and my carrot stick... any recomendations?
MamasBoy930 1 year ago

As soon as the lure hits the water the spool tension stops the spool from turning.

i use 12pound berkley fireline is tehre a problem useing a fused braid?

Oops, i asked my question wrong. I meant should i use fluocarbon or monofilament line on my baitcasting reel, or does it not matter?
physchohead24 1 year ago
It does matter when it comes to lure presentation & water clarity tied in with sensitivity. If you are a beginner I would use 12lb mono due to it's all around ability to fish well..

RANGERROCKET25 2 years ago
Did you watch Baitcasting Backlash & How To Fix It yet?
InformativeFisherman 2 years ago
Well, I don't have a problem clearing them but it's hard to believe that you can straighten them out just by cranking the reel over and over. I just pull out the kinks and reel in the slack.
RANGERROCKET25 2 years ago
hey im new to baitcasters and i got a $70 shimano and it comes with the easy mag just like that red one you got it also comes with a cast controll i was wondering if you could tell me how to set up its a med action thank you and message me back

RANGERROCKET25 2 years ago
no its a shimano calistro. Ive found out what to do with it but thanks for trying to help. keep these videos coming.

Thanks mate.

i just got my first baitcast reel, and it is missing the tension knob. It doesn't cast far at all and makes a screeching noise when i try to cast it. Can anybody explain how/if they are related?
SaginawRiverFishing 2 years ago
this week i am buying an abu garcia revo s and from what ive heard it is an amzing reel, especially for the price, but some people were saying that it doesnt have a braking system, only the spool tension knob. in some reviews people were saying that it doesnt matter. what do you think?
elementskater48 2 years ago
If this is your first BC I would not suggest it... Breaking systems make things more trouble free no breaks with pitching & flipping is fine...

Is a browning maxus a good reel on a st.croix bass mojo because i am new to bass fishing and felt like getting something good at first but i am not new to fishing.
riedellskates12 2 years ago
Vs the Midas the maxus is a great deal the drag is the only down fall being 10lb vs 12lb & the line cap is 5ard differ but other wise its the same in my eyes so yeah its good,,, What length & build is your mojo stick? A medium speed baitcaster is always best when getting started with a 6'6" rod med action...
