I've never seen one of these early early Johnson discs, what a treat to see and hear it played. It was recorded on Oct 31, 1900 and is definitely an Eldridge Johnson pre matrix (Victor) product. It was also issued on Canadian Berliner 490. The anti-piracy announcement of Favor over the piano intro is fascinating and could have been with the Canada side in mind even though only take 4 was issued. (Berliner was barred from making records or machines in the USA).
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I never heard this song from Mr. Favor before, and I also appreciate the other details you mention and show in the video, and what a great phonograph you play it on as well! I love music from this era and it saddens me to think how many songs have probably been lost (same for early film) so when someone shares a gem from the early years, I'm most grateful! :)
@theguyof1900 I do indeed have plenty of Silas Leachman recordings on early 7-inch and 10-inch Victor and Victor Monarch records. His recordings are of great interest but I have been hesitant to post them due to their sensitive content. What do you think? Shall I post one?
@MusicBoxBoy Indeed you must please do If you have these recordings Lam lam Lam 1901 daddy wouldent buy me a bow wow 1892. All goin out and nothin goin in 1903 if you have those ones please do so in posting them if not just post what you have.
@transformingArt That would certainly be an interesting and plausible method to thwart anyone attempting to copy these back recordings in those days. However, in this case, it's questionable whether this recording is indeed from a Berliner master or it was a mistake by Edward Favor. Thanks for your comments, as always.
Doug, thanks for uploading this rare early gem. I have never seen one of these records in person. I note that the music starts before the announcement is complete.
@EdisonSquirrel Thanks for your comments, Rocky. Always good to hear from you. I noticed that aspect about Favor's announcement as well. It's the first I'd ever heard of any annoucement extending into the music on disc or cylinder.

By the way, I wonder why Favor made his announcement after the piano accompaniment has started - possible way to avoid 'counterfeiting'?

What a beautiful machine - and a quite astounding record in which to accompany it.
