  • My grandad worked on the Annesley line ..his name was Harold Mickelthwaite brother to Norman ...just wondering i anyone knew of him and i they have any photos or info ..I know he got to drive the Flying Scotsman :)

  • My Dad was a goods guard based here until leaving in 1962 approx. If anyone remembers Ernest Goodliffe (and it would most likely be your dad that did i know!) please send me a message . Cheers!

  • In 1954 I cycled from Sheffield taking in Hasland, Staverley and Annersley all in one Sunday, total 76 miles, and got home 3hours late to a good hammering off my Dad.

We were dedicated in those days, but a bit stupid as well.

  • wonderful

  • I was born and brought up in Kirkby/Sutton-in-Ashfeild only a few miles from Annesley and as young boys[fro 1957-63 we would cycle over to this depot mainly on a weekends to see what stock was there; one regular sighting on the GCR line in the week was 'Master Cutler' and often worked by a 'Butler Henderson' D class loco 'Happy childhood days'

    Thanks for the imput

  • Lovely stuff. This would have been May 1964, when 46251 worked an RCTS special from Nottingham to Swindon, as organised by the late great Vic Forster. It would not normally have been anyhwere near Annesley, of course.

  • fantastic wheel spins @ 1:40!!!

  • I see, sad that Britain through away so much of its industrial heritage. It's coming back to bite us on the arse now though, because our economy basically makes nothing the world needs and our trade deficit is getting worse.

Great to see these old engines and industries, cheers mate!

  • With the Far East and Asia ecomomies growing (especially China, who are buying up everything in vast quantities) our economy could slow up even more.

  • Why were the trains so dirty and rusty?

  • because this was when british rail were running down all their steam loco's and moving to diesel..

It is good to see this footage - esp as i live less than a mile from the MPD, now buried under god knows how many millions of tons of pit spoil

  • That's right. BR didn't bother looking after their steam engines in the latter days of steam because they were being replaced by the diesels.

It's a shame that the yard has been covered over. At least, in a way, it's been preserved (?) for archaeologists.

  • True, though it would be one hell of a dig ;)

There still are some pointers to the mpd being there, the foundations for the south signalbox are still there even though the adjoining bridge has gone..

  • Bring on Time Team lol. They'd soon have it uncovered with all their volunteers lol.

  • Brill Footage!
