  • I lol'd when he climbed over the other rats

  • @thesacrament77 there is no "breed" of rat; only different coat colors. unlike dogs, where some breeds may be more timid, and others more assertive, rats are all the same except for coat. the only difference in rats is a wild rat versus a domesticated one. domestics (or fancy's) have been bred to be much more timid and friendly.

  • I've had my rat for two months now and my mom is making me hold her on the kitchen floor because she poops and pees multiple times in 30 mins then I put her back so she will 'go' and take her back out but it never works and it is making me not let here run around like other peoples rats. What should I do ?

  • @lolheckya What you are experiecing is what most baby rats go through. The poop/pee phase is a natural reaction to discourage preditors from eating them. They will grow out of it as they get older and used to you. You can also give them a litter bin and they will figure out on their own that they could poop in there. I fill mine with "yesterday's news" pellets. Unfortunatly I have been unable to train them to pee in this bin. However, they don't pee when they outside their cage.

  • @lolheckya keep him in his damn cage

  • PEOPLE WHO BUY PET RATS TO FEED TO THEIR SNAKES, DOGS, TURTLES, ARE FROM THE BLOODLINE OF CAIN, AND THOSE WHO BUY PET RATS TO LOVE THEM, HOLD THEM, AND RESPECT THEM, ARE FROM THE BLOODLINE OF ABEL.

  • All those rat haters are missing out on the best pet ever.

  • Cool vid :) What lovely colours your rats are, what are they called? :) I have 6 rats. 4 girls and 2 boys. my girls are: agouti black and white hooded, and i have 1 silver fawn. My boys are: champeign hooded and the other one is mixed breed :)
  • I......LOVE......YOUR......RATS X3

  • I'm not sure what classifies them as "fancy" but prehaps it's like having a purebred dog. Any dog is good for a pet, but if you want credentials and a lineage, you need a rat from a breeder that goes for specific charactics (color patterns, dumbo ears, etc). My two sense is that if it has black eyes, (as opposed to red) it's fancy.

  • @Plichtam That is very incorrect.. The word "Fancy" is actually just used to distinguish them from the wild rats they have been bred away from for the last century or so. A "Fancy" rat is to a wild rat, as a dog is to a wolf... The word "Fancy" is used to let someone know they are pet rats, not wild ones..And it has nothing to do with coat and eye color, but rather domestication.

  • @Plichtam - fancy rats are the ones with pretty colors, as opposed to common brown or gray.

  • @monicasuetannehill fancy rats is a physical breed and has absolutely nothing to do with the color of their coats. That's a fact that you can look up anywhere. Please actually know what you're talking about before you decide to 'teach' others your 'wisdom'.

  • @Plichtam well fancy rat basically means hobby rat

so a fancy rat is a domesticated rat (i believe)

  • @Plichtam Fancy just means that they're not wild. Wild brown rats don't make good pets.

  • @Plichtam Even though they are called 'fancy rats' it really just refers to the two-toned common domesticated pet rats seen here. It practically means 'generic pet rat breed.' 'Fancy' is used to distinguish them from wild rats, and from 'dumbo' rats (which have large, low ears) or 'naked' rats (which have no fur). There are such things as specialty rat breeds too, but the ones in this video are very typical looking little guys. So cute though! I love the leap at :50!

  • is any pet rat a fancy rat ? or is it a specific breed ? i have two black and white females and they do seem rather fancy lol

  • 1:00 what are you feeding them? They are really cute rats.

  • i love rats!!!!

    they are awesome!!

who ever thinks that rats are awesome!!

    put thumbs up!!!

  • I love this video for some reason.

  • have fun with your rat i know i miss my rat dearly both dead in 2008 i would do anything to relive those days.

  • i want one... you think its ok too carry them outside like some people do since they are pocket pets. i want to get a bonding pouch and carry them with me. what do you guys think?

  • @bocard80 I have taken mine outside but only after they will come back when I call. They do not like bright light and are almost afraid of it. Dusk is the best time to take them for a walk. There are sites that will show you how to make a walking harness (leash) for them too.

  • @Plichtam what are some sites you suggest

  • @bocard80 Apparently I cannot enter a url in comments or something else is preventing the post. A quick search for "rat harness" on google povides a link to ehow on how to make one. The other links on the first page of google link to site to buy one for $10 shipped.

  • @Plichtam ok thank you :)

  • @bocard80 i always used to put my 2 rats in the hood of my sweatshirt with a blanket and go for a walk. i loved it, but they often peed in my hood. so i just chose an old sweatshirt and washed it after each walk.

  • @bocard80 I take my two rats EVERYWHERE with me. I have had them for 2 months now and they are both female. Female like to explore a lot and sometimes get a little finicky with being on my shoulder if they need to go to the bathroom but they adore going places with me. Just remember that they are rats and might escape if the bond is not close enough or they are too scared.

  • Dang, they can jump far as hell!

  • damn that rat can flyyy!

  • I don't understand why rats are mostly associated with food for snakes! They are amazing pets! When i bought mine they were meant for food too, and the owner of the store was surprised that I was keeping them as pets. It makes me want to buy every rat to save them :P

  • Was that mustard you were feeding them? And why?

  • @Hellscope1 Le sigh. . This has go to be the 10 questions regarding what I am feeding them. Please read the video info. It's pudding although they would probably enjoy mustard too. Rats like just about anything and they won't eat it if they don't like it. Some prefer sweet treats, some salty.

  • I built it myself using designs posted at dapper.au (The Dapper Rat) website. Check out their grotto if you want to make your own. The shelves are made of Malamite which is very easy to clean.

  • @Plichtam wouldent they chew threw it?

  • Love the four of them feeding at once ... so adorable! I was wary when my partner wanted to get some pet rats, but I totally fell in love with them. Now I'm forever filming them for the purposes of boring YouTubers :)

  • Love the four of them feeding at once ... so adorable! I was wary when my partner wanted to get some pet rats, but I totally fell in love with them. Now I'm forever filming them for the purposes of boring YouTubers :)

  • omg epic leap

  • They are having the time of their lives =)

  • I think I just caught a baby rat. Can wild rats raised from the baby be pets?

  • How old is it? If it's too young, it might need milk. Sometimes wild rats will be friendly if raised young enough, it really depends on how young it is. If you decide to do it though, never ever house it with normal pet rats.

  • Many of the rats I buy are feeders meant for snakes. I don't notice any difference between them and ones bred for pets. Some breeders do focus on personality and you'll have a better chance of getting one that likes to be played with and is less independant. But you can certainly have a wild one you found as sa pup. Personally, I don't care for rats with red eyes, but I'm sure it'll be fine. Nearly any animal can be rasied from a baby to play nice with humans. See Wojtek the soldier bear.

  • I would buy a live rat that's would be snake food (I buy frozen rats for my snakes so it would be convenient), but the chances of them living very long aren't high, are they? I mean, feeder rats generally don't live that long as far as I know. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • My "feeder" rats live around 3 years on average. Some make it over 4, a few have only made it 2 but usually it's an illness or cancer that takes them down early.

  • I used to have one, Pearl (Siamese rat). She had two other sisters until they were taken for snake feed, leaving Pearl alone to be who-knows-what if I haven't bought her. Best pet I ever had, until she died of a tumor. :(

  • Rats are awesome!!!

  • i had a blood rat and know i am getting a new know soon

  • I just got my rat she used to run around she jumps but now she is getting to used to hang around me she likes being on my shoulder when i walk around and then as soon as i stop walking for like 3 minutes she runs down my arm to my palm and we play and then we have to put her up

  • Aww they are soo cute.

  • Your rats are absolutely adorable! I was just playing with my rat before and he was getting hyper and chasing my hand, doing some really fast movement like as if he was ultra excited! I cant wait to get another rat to keep him company so they can play together.

  • Your Rats are so cute. You did a wonderful thing in buying ones that would of been food for snakes. When I get two Rats I'll do the same thing. Thanks for opening up my eyes. They look like wonderful pets to have.

  • @chicorycavy Did you end up buying some? I'm down to my last one sadly. Soka died last friday but she was over 4 years old and had cancer. The last one, Mochi, has a really neat color pattern around her eyes and is our last rat. She isn't one of our better ones (very independant) but we can still trust her enough to run around the house and not chew stuff. She's good about being picked up now, but immediatly wants to be put down. She's never bitten at least.

  • hausratten sind echt süß und spielfreundlich

  • my daughter and I need to know what that is your feeding them????

  • @rooruffneck Tapioca Pudding. Pretty much any human food will do, they love it all. Usually we give them a bit of whatever we are eating for dinner. Some will warn that peanut butter is a choking hazard but ours have not had trouble with it straight off a spoon. Chocolate's only problem with rats is the same with humans (lots of fat).

  • OMG how cute! That rat jumped really far! My rats jump, but not like that, maybe mine are too fat? :-D And that's so cool cuz I have 2 black hooded rats and one tan and white, too.

  • OMG.

    That rat like... sky rocketed!

    My rat doens't jump. lmao.

  • @Mcrissyx Rats that have the inclination to jump are rare. She never did that again after that one day we caught her on tape. We got another of our rats (Meacham) to jump shortdistances between the table and the chair, but never as far as Cali in the video.

  • :53 That rat has hops.

  • how big to they grow nd are dey nocturnal please answer

  • There are two sizes you can get. These are the smaller variety of rat. They do prefer darkness and are nocturnal. Ours usually get active right around 2PM and then again around 8PM.

  • @Plichtam

Mine do too. My two girls sleep and are pretty quiet most of the night and then 2am comes and the makes tons of noise XD

  • cute. they remind me of my 3 girls.

  • what are they eating at 1:04? sorry, hte sound on my comp. doesn't work. anyway, i have a black rat named Ingo who might actually have ADHD (if that's even possible XD) and anyway, my brother and i both got rats about 2 years ago, i got Ingo, and my brother got her sister, Duma. so she grew up with Duma for about... im not sure, 6 months, and then he died (we are trying to figure out why) but i was wondering if i should get her a companion. should i?

  • Tapioca Pudding Cup. Rats are very social and it is always good to have two of them. Imaging being locked up all day by yourself without YouTube? Oh the horror! With a friend they at least can groom each other and play fight for fun.

  • @Plichtam hahah without youtube. Yeah man i had one rat before and i always felt a bit mean just having one but i always took him out, he passed away a couple of months ago now but today i just got 2 more. I think there playing together, i hope there not fighting

  • eiiesha plz dont only get one get two instead rats are social animals so they can be stressed if they are alone plz get two instead

  • hey im inolover18 i have a black and white rat its named oreo

  • I love that cage! I've been looking for something like that for my boys forever! Where did you get it or how did you make it?

  • @Pstarks06 Made the cage from instructions found on dapper.au (The Dapper Rat) website. au means it is an Austrailian website.

  • holy shit i didn't know rats could jump that far like 0:52

  • lol when it jumped you should've went slow mo!

  • @SaitoShiluzu I which I could have. The video was taken with a 2MP camera (one of the first) and I"m surprised it would do video at all. If you see my other video with mission impossible music, you can see Meacham jumping in slow motion but not as far.

  • im gettin another soon, i had to put my old rat down his name was Boy but he had a groth on the side of his face that made his eye grow out

  • cancer, it's very commun for rats.

  • Because these are domestic rats, as apposed to wild. They are bred to be pets and never get the chance to pick up diseases.

  • they dont bite

  • @dnomsed5 It's true that rats have a very similar bio chemistry to people and some diseases effect both. They get a very bad rap cause of the plague that was carried by rats. But their only crime is getting sick and then wandering to other locations and getting others sick. Remember back to swine flu in 2009. People on flights to other countries were doing the same thing. Really, can you hate something just because it has the potential to get sick?

  • Aww cute. I want a few pet rats but my sucky mom won't let me.

  • Aww. my mom HATES rats but im getting one this weekend anyways. I was all like "PLZ MOM!" and she was like "Holy FUCK. FINE" and was like

    "YESSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH"

  • LOL thats cool. My mom finally gave in. I have 2 now and my mom loves them haha

  • well that was just awesome...don't let your rats roam free when your not there...you might not see them again...stunt rats i loved it ..ciao

  • lol. If they already know their names and they're in a room where they can't chew any wires, they can't get into much trouble xD

  • @windchimex Believe me this is true. We only let ours out when they will come when we call. Mecham (not in this video) managed to climb behind our dishwasher or under the stove and would get in the walls. We figured out how to prevent it but not until she has disappeared for a few hours and we noticed where she was hiding. Then she started digging up the carpet trying to get under the closed door to our bedroom (she was very adventuresome). However, she was one of our most beloved rats.

  • I love the dapper rat website! I've been there many times. I've made my own ratty hammocks and lofts, a clubhouse and I'm working on making a grotto-style cage in the near future. I just need more room to put it all! My apt is sooo tiny...Thanx for posting! Ur ratties r too cute!

  • I love rattys

  • rats.... spiderrat? or batrats?

  • I wish my 10 month old male would live in a pair, but every time I introduce him to another rat he gets very aggressive. :(

  • thats why you should never get a single rat in the first place! i dont understand why people let them go to live on their own. one of my rats had babies and i had to rehome a lot of them but anyone that asked for 1 rat i said no! its not fair on the rat! especially since theyre born into a group and then theyre just taken away to live on their own

  • i'm scared of rat's i dont mind pet one's but wild one's are scary and weird..

  • lol have you ever seen a wild rat?

  • yeah hundreds i've held many but it's just i picked up what i thought was a dead one to bury the poor thing and it can't have been dead and when i picked it up it jumped up at me it just left me a bit wary of them..but i'll pick one up no problem!

  • ahahaha! that cant have been very pleasant! at least it was just a rat though...i was convinced my dead cousin was guna jump up at me! he didnt though :p

  • well i thought my cat had killed it but it must have just been knocked out! i lock my cats in so that they don't kill

  • @victoriatodd I can see how that was tramatic for you. I'm sure the rat was even more startled to be woken from a dead sleep by you. I can't tell you how adorable it is to see a sleeping rat pack. They tend to use each other as pillows.

  • :02 "need a moment, chew it over with twix"

  • is it ok to use pine shavings for there bedding

  • No, it can cause respiratory problems. Care fresh bedding or newspaper is best :)

  • I just cover my plastic shelf's in fleece and vaccum and wash the fleece weekly

    :)

  • Be careful with those long jumps. I had a rat that loved to jump (great pet) - he jumped down a short distance (4-5") and fractured his pelvis. The vet told me that this was a *very* common injury due to their pear shaped bodies. You can't do back surgery on a rat - luckily he healed, but he could have died (or needed to be put to sleep).

  • @lacoeur That is one of the only bad sides of using malamite to make a cage. The shelves are very slippery when you have claws and the rats do tend to take a fall once in a while. Only one of them hurt itself (Olive) during one of these falls and sied a few months later. Did you know that vets can do chiropratic care for your rat? He tried to put the bone back in place so that her nerves could heal, but it never happened. I used to have towels on the shelves but were too hard to maintain.

  • What an awesome cage!! Did you make it yourself?

  • i've had rats for as long as i can remember. and they dont smell bad. if anything as long as you clean them out every weekend they actually have a perfume sort of smell. its actually quite nice. lol

  • Hi! Just thought I'd ask:

I'm thinking about getting a pair f pet female rats and just wanted to enquire about the smell. i've heard that if you wash their cage once a week it's no problem, but I read somewhere that no matter what they wind up smelling strongly.

  • As long as you clean them out regularly and give them fresh bedding, they won't smell in the slightest.

  • So cute rats..again.. :D

Rats are so cuties! i love them so much!

  • Can you have a cat along with rat? :) just wonder

  • @truckabc If you expose a kitten to rats when it's very young, they will grow up liking each other. The can, once used to rats, won't hurt them. One of our other friends gots rats with a cat who wasn't used to them. The cat got a good biting when he tried to paw at them and left them alone afterwards. Even little ones would give a house can (not a tom cat) a hard time if it tried to mess with them.

  • Can you train them to litter-box like cats? Or they shit all over the place, gee

  • Rats tend to pick a place to poop, like the corner of their cage.

  • @truckabc You don't even have to train them, just give them a box with litter (I use yesterday's news) and they figure it out themselves. Babies don't pay attention but they'll start using it after 6 months. I have never caught them peeing outside their cage but they tend to do that wherever inside the cage. Too bad they haven't figured that part out.

  • dang that one jumped like six feet! i almost expected her to be wearing a cape! but cute rats!

  • <3 rats

  • Ohh what sweet frats LOL. Nice cage! Good on ya for saving your rats from being food. I have two rats myself, I agree they are really smart!

  • omg im onna git a frat this week and my grandpa is terrified of rats but he trusts that i won't let it play alone, but im in school everyday and studying when i'm not in school , would th rat be comfortable with me working so much? he'll always be around me when i'm not in school. would he still feel somewhat neglected ? (only reason i study so much is because my roster is packed with honors and AP courses.)

  • Get two rats so they can keep each other company when your not around...

  • why are you watching a pet rat video if youre just going to get grossed out and leave bad comments, isch0721? youre probably not intelligent enough to know this, but pet rats are loving, smart pets

  • Apparently, you can have roaches as pets :D

  • Are you serious, Isch0721? Rats are really clean! And smart! They're like miniature dogs. And they clean themselves a lot everyday. More than once each day. I bet they smell better than you. BTW, if you don't like rats then why are you watching a video about them?

  • Rats have special enzymes in their saliva to clean themselves, just like cats and dogs. That's why it's a fact that your mouth is a whole lot dirtier than a dog, cat, or rats mouth. Read a book.

  • when a animal licks, it cleans itself. they have stuff in their saliva, unlike you, and me.

  • Cat's and dogs lick themselves clean...what is your point exactly?

  • Amazing! Most humans don't even bathe once a day. By the way, in English, "cats" is a noun. The apostrophe (the cat's blank...) is only used in the possessive form.

  • I know, it was late and I was tired. :p

  • doh, wrong account.

  • you a idiot isch

  • lsch0721,

Most people like to hide their abject ignorance and prejudice, but it looks like you have no problem spouting it. You obviously don't know the first thing about pet rats.

There is information all around you, just do a quick Google search on the matter and you'll feel like an idiot within minutes. Basically, pet rats combine the personality of puppies and the hygiene of cats. They are as well suited to being pets as cotton is to being clothing.

  • LOL. You're pretty fucking stupid dude.

  • You clean out the pee when you, well, clean out the cage, of course. The frequency of the cleaning depends on the number of rats, the size of the cage, and your own time and mood. I never bothered with litter-boxes. Perhaps I'm too lazy to train them. Outside the cage they don't pee much, just dabs here and there. Mine always seem to pee on the same spots which I just scrub down every now and then.

  • You don't have to litter train them. Just give them a shallow tray with "Yesterdays News brand litter" and they will figure it out.

  • How do you clean out the pee from the cage? Because you can have a litterbox, but they tend to pee everywhere to mark there territory???

  • That frist black and white rat looks exactly like my rat who was put down yesterday because of a tumor

  • WTTFFF!!?! LOL THAT RAT jump like really far wow what stunners xD

  • that jump was awesome XD

  • Check out my pet rats!

  • I want pet rats. My mom is okay with it but my dad is so stuck up he doesnt even listen. He thinks that all rats are from the sewer, and are smelly vermin that bite you all the time. And he even thinks that there no smarter than eraser. A brain dead rat is probably smarter than him.

  • i love rats im gettin 2 next week :)

  • you seem like a great owner!

i love rats and have had like 10 in my lifetime, i am hoping to get some more soon, but i have hammies at the moment.

    they are really cute!

good job on saving them from being food!

  • rats are sooooo cute! i have 3 of them

  • Cheese will not kill a rat. As a species they have adapted to eat just about anything. Mine love ice-cream and once in a while they get a little bit of turkey. Though it isn't a good idea to give them too much people food, but the occasional treat is just fine because they are goods rats and deserve it. ^_^

  • this was a adoreable video!!!! and that was nice how you saved these cute animals from those snakes

  • holy crap that jump was amamzing

  • u idiot they can die from givin em cheese thats only on shows

  • It is true that some sticky foods do pose a choking hazard (like peanut butter). But other than that mild risk, there are no foods that you cannot feed them (chocolate included). Ours get cheese curds from Wisconsin whenver we visit.

  • do a little more research. most rodents r lactose intolerant. it wont really hurt em tho. mayB upset their tummies

  • feed your rat some cheese mine love it

  • Im having a "cute rat contest!" Send me photos of your cute rats and who knows...you might win! Also if you dont have a rat you can come, and vote! Hope to see you there!

  • ive alreadu got two hamsters but i fell that i need some mores responsibility and a fwe more personal pets. I want rats very much and my parents almost let me but its the problem that they dont think i can fix then up when were going on vacation:( I know i can fix that but my cad won´t belive me. Anyone got some tips for getting rats just at the common point and if somebody knows about how i can get them to belive me when i say i will fix the vacation thing:/ anyone who can help please?

  • Tell them it will help you be more responcible. Dont cry, beg and plead. Act polite. Talk to them about all the knowlede you have learned about rats. And if you want, make a poster without telling them then present it to them. Also, take care of your hamsters, show them how well and caring you are with animals. If you need anymore help mail me.

  • i used to have two rats...they both passed on now but i dont get why people dont like them...they are so cute!!!

  • I used to have 2 they were adorable and very tame, but rats are prone to tumors, and mine had to b put down......but when i told my friends that i had rats, they went, EWW RATS!!! ugh. nobody sees the cuteness lol

  • My parents didn't want me having a rat, cos my mom doesn't like them.

So I just went out and got mine and said "HEY MOM, look what I have!" when I came home. She's grown to like my girl, kinda.. heh (:

    ANYWHOO.

Plichtam, what were you feeding them from your hand?

  • It's pudding from a Jello brand pudding snack. You've got some understanding folks there. My wife likes to come home with $200 snakes and is like "surprise"! Oh well, it's a pretty rainbow boa but she'll never get anything other than mice.

  • its so annoying isnt it? they just dont understand. i want 2 males named waffle and teddy

  • i really want a pet rat but my whole family thinks their disgusting. Im trying to prove them wrong.

  • holy crap so am i!!!! my parents especially

i want a girl named blondie!!

    how old are you???

  • haha ive been throguh that... i eventually got them to agree for me to get one, and she was the best rat! i had to put her to sleep tho cause of tumors and they wont let me get another one :(

  • Argh! It's chaos! Heh, my ratties tend to climb on top of my tv and jump into my lamp. It's quite a fright when I'm really interested in the tv, lol.

  • WTF! rats are amazingly cute <3 :D

  • I do pet rat rescue; this looks like what happens when my 5-member crew get out to play(supervised pandemonium...lol!).

  • im going to get a pet rat soon!im so happy im just geting things ready for it this weekend or next
