My dad always taught me, as I was growing up, to be forthright. Take things as they were and be honest. So when I came out to him I said, "Dad, you always told me not to beat around the bush, so... I'm gay." I made a joke out of it, because I was nervous as all get out, and he laughingly said, "um... yeah, now tell me something I don't know." In many ways I feel like I'm one of the luckiest guys I know.

Coming out isn't equally difficult for everyone. Davey seemingly had a very understanding group of friends and family who were there for him during that time. It's sad that not everyone can have that, but I know that it certainly doesn't help that everyone makes it out to be a serious downer of an occasion. You should be able to celebrate coming out, not act like it's a funeral for your previous life.
