Althought i love the show, that was really unreal. A guy that size, no matter he only lifts and doesn't know how to fight, would have kicked tony's ass. Tony's fat, doesn't know how to really fight (supposing all the people he's kicked ass didn't fight back), and had recently been shot.
I think the bigger complex in this scene was with the young guy. If he stayed down after one punch or walked away he would have lost all respect from everybody.
He had no choice but to get up and take a beating even though everyone knew its senseless.
If Tony wants to fuck you up to raise his self esteem or assert his authority you better let him.
It's like this: Tony has like 100+ pounds on dude. Now Perry was cut, but it was lean muscle. Tony caught him with that suckerpunch to the chin, worked his body, and kneed him in the gut. I've seen club bouncers beat the dogshit out of professional atheletes before.
@mjb9982 A number of them did. They took too much fuckin' time off between Seasons 5 and 6 (even -during- 6). Meanwhile, AJ and Meadow got rail thin. Meadow lost all that thickness she had in Season 3 (she was puking up her eats in real life). Whoever told her she was fat, I could ring his neck.
See this is the reason why I hated the character Tony. They fucking made him too special. He gets hot girls, he beats up anyone, etc. This is pure bullshit. Here we got a muscular built like a rock bodybuilder. And this fat slob apparently beats that guy up. Folks this is bullshit. Have you ever tango with a bodybuilder or someone muscular. These muscular bastards can take A LOT of punishment and still go on. This scene is the killbuzz for me. No fat slob can beat an athletically built person.
@AgentCell bobby kicked his ass in the last season and it doesnt matter if your fat or built at 150lb man could kick 250 man's ass, its a fight you win some and you lose some
@sloppiejoe87 Wrong. Put a fat slob fighter in the ring with a fit fighter. They'll get there ass handed by the fit fighter. Being fit = strength and endurance. That's why fighters who incur ring rust gets there ass handed over the fighter who is strong and conditioned combatively. The answer is no.
@AgentCell Predominantly true what you said, but there are exceptions, of course. When a fat guy w/ muscle mass knows how to throw a punch and can take some hits back, they can occasionally catch a more fit opponent flush, especially if the other guy is overconfident. Butterbean is an example. Foreman back in the 90s. Big fat guy knocked out the muscled rocker Glenn Danzig in a funny clip (Danzig was trying to intimidate the guy and got caught). Never be overconfident in a fight.
@AgentCell street fight and professional fight are two different things.if its a professional then yeah the more inshape fighter would win but in a street fight it's 50/50 and the person with the stronger chin will win and im not saying a out of shape person would win everytime but they can win some fights lol
@AgentCell If you run a Ferrari into a Mack truck, which one do you think is gonna survive? Sure the Ferrari is well tuned, sleek, and fast as fuck, but a Mack truck is solid and heavy. Dude was cut and shredded, yeah, but Tony was first and foremost a brawler. plus, dude was afraid to hit back. Lifting weights can make you strong, yeah, but it won't toughen your knuckles. And Tony wasn't exactly a weakling; he lifted weights too and played high school football.
@creamyapanties dude its a film... its fairy tales. sure something similar like this exists, but I still being healthy is better than being fat. Its yourself at the end of the day.
that comment up there about loosing respect makes me laugh, this idea of Tony acting impulsively to make himself feel better about his insecurities exists from the start to end, he does it a thousand times in the show, just like what he's doing here he also acts other times when he knows there cant be consequences because of his position as top dog. if this is where you lost respect for him then your naive! one of the many many many times he has done this.
evan the tinyest guy in this planet with a 9 can lay down rooney colmean and all those "bodybuilders 1v1.. in this time ther is no "i am stronger" trust me
This is the scene where I lost all respect for Tony Soprano. He feels weak, so he goes after a muscular guy who he knows isn't gonna fight back cause he's the Boss. He acted like a fucking bird.
@ushockey08 no you got it all wrong and the 5 ppl who thumbed you up! Tony wanted to show after his surgery that he wasn't weak! He wanted to show them he is still the boss and that no bullet will stop him, he had to make an example to the crew about who is in charge and running things!!! So naturally, as animal instinct, he picks the most fit and biggest person in the room and fucks him up!
@MrIlleism He doesn't have it wrong at all. You can't justify what Tony did in that situation regardless of what insecurities he was trying to make up for.
@ushockey08 What? he went after the guy who he knew was a hothead and the only one who would lose his temper and fight back, none of the others would dare raise their hands to the boss.
@ushockey08 I have to disagree. Tony Soprano lives in a world of masculinity, where is supposed to be the biggest and baddest. When he starts to sense weakness in himself he nips it in the butt by taking on the youngest but strongest of his crew who he KNOWS has a problem controlling his anger. It's not exactly admirable but you can understand why Tony had to do it.
@ushockey08 The fact that you ever had respect for him might be the problem... ;) he was a sympathetic lead character precisely because despite his position of "power", he was weak. Gandolfini played his arc out like the master he is.
@ushockey08 Naw, I disagree, I thought it was pretty ballsy for Tony to start shit with the biggest guy there....a guy who also looks like 25 yrs younger....I don't think TOny feels weak, he looks around and gets pissed cause his crew is lazy and sloppy...
@ushockey08 You and the other 23 fucks who put there "Thum up" have no focking idea what this represents and how energizing is for your ego and respect to beat the shit out of any prick in front of your friends, all thought this is just a show.
@ushockey08 I disagree. He doesn't pick a fight because he feels weak. He picks a fight because OTHERS perceive him as being weak after the surgery.
It's not about personal insecurity. It's about reestablishing himself as the top dog in the eyes of others. And it worked, as you could tell in the next episode when characters like Chris went back to agreeing with him on the same issues they were against during this episode.
It sucks for that guy Tony beat up, but it was effective.
@vigilanteartist Yup. The crew are a pack of predators, in more ways than one, and the only way to lead is to be the most dominant. I liked the eye contact he made with several of the guys after the beatdown. Kind of like an exclamation point. And at some level, you get the impression that he really needed to prove to himself that he was still that cold, and that tough.
@ushockey08 u re wrong! he choose the muscular bolt guy, beacause on the same episode him say to Tony that he can´t control his temper, if you watch again the scene when he get up after Tony´s puch, he is going to hit Tony!this is why he choose the strongest guy on these room after observe every candidate to fight there (Bobby, Paulie, Fatman) to demostrate all of them and himself that he´s recovered and not a sick guy!
@ushockey08 You are wrong he picked him because he knew he'd fight back, plus he was the youngest strongest. If you watch the big guy attempted a wild haymaker.
@ushockey08 that is a normal perfect reaction considering the enviroment he is in. and remember earlier in that episode they were telling how another mobster was weak(forget his name). also the guy did fight back after tony punched him.
@ssptg This dude isn't a bodybuilder, he doesn't have those kind of styrofoam muscles, this guy is built the same way I am, and trust me he'd be fucking strong.
@theporksicle I agree to a point and yes anyone else would have been killed but Bobby's punch seemed to be out of instant anger im not so sure he gave it that much thought alas his breakdown when trying to leave and smashing the truck afterward when it dawned on him what he had done but in reading your comment you could easily be right!
@IrishChris1979 point taken but if your going to make sly remarks about some guys wife sucking cock under a bridge and dont brace yourself for some kind of reaction you might be thinking just a lil too much of yourself weather its Tony Sorprano or Al Capone. Tony had that ass whipping coming and the our thing pecking order goes out the window. Drunk or sober no man is going to lose a fight for his wifes honor in front of her like that. Bobby was willing to die over the statement Tony was not!!!
I disagree, most men, myself included, would not punch a mafia boss for insulting our wives. Bobby was relying on his family connection (family in the normal sense of the word, not the mafia sense) to keep him alive, anyone else who did that to Tony, irrespective of how much provocation they were subjected to, would have been killed.
Well, ther's more to it than who's fat/strong/skinny and so on. Tony got in a single, powerful sursprise hit to the head. That was probably enough in this case.
I don't know how used the other guy was to abuse, either. He looks like the kinda guy who's usually in Tony's position, starting and ending the fight within seconds. Hits hard, but goes down quickly.
@MBJB07 its not the point. hes big and still strong. not to mention if he was a mob guy its a done deal. thats what they do, they don't lose in fights
@knicks3085 Bobby only won because Tony was sick and Carmela jumped on his back. He was kicking Bobby's ass up until then. of course it's fiction, it was written that way.
Tony needed to re-establish his dominance over his guys. Notice how he scans the room to find the most worthy bad-ass. Beating down the biggest guy in the room shows all that he is back from convalescing and doesn't want to be treated like a patient any more. I believe this was all Melfi's fault..she encouraged this...well, sorta.
@ASSBANG6969 It fits perfectly if you watch it and pay attention, Jennifer Melfi was talking about establishing dominence over his other crew members (alpha males), he was worried about people constantly looking at him like a patient and worried they might think he is weak. So he did this in other to re-restablish his power of everyone, basically he wants to show them that he is not a patient anymore and he's back to being the powerful leader.
lol in real life that guy woulda put tony through the refrigerator door also i like how tony looks at bobby first maybe he knew bobby would kick his butt like he did a few episodes later
thats what makes the sopranos great the only show where the main character, whos actually the protagonist who you have to route for and love can be such an enormous douchebucket, kinda like where tony threatened meadows half black bf

Loved the Series, but this scene just did not seem to fit....
ASSBANG6969 11 months ago
@ASSBANG6969 It fits perfectly if you watch it and pay attention, Jennifer Melfi was talking about establishing dominence over his other crew members (alpha males), he was worried about people constantly looking at him like a patient and worried they might think he is weak. So he did this in other to re-restablish his power of everyone, basically he wants to show them that he is not a patient anymore and he's back to being the powerful leader.

thats what makes the sopranos great the only show where the main character, whos actually the protagonist who you have to route for and love can be such an enormous douchebucket, kinda like where tony threatened meadows half black bf

I love how he has that shit eating grin in the mirror. Tony was one of the most complex, evil pricks in television history.
